Never thought of Rosemary as an ornamental shrub. I like how full this one looks. Love it in cooking so it’s a win win.

I love this plant especially when cooking chicken, lamb or fish. The heavier “branches” make great skewers. Soak in water and put through chicken tenders or pieces of lamb or fish and grill. Mother Earth has given us some wonderful plants and this is one of them.

I really, really love this plant too! Linda Vater grows and recommended it, so I got one and your recommendation confirms it's superiority. I now have a small one in a pot as I look for the best spot to put it. If you have ever eaten at the legendary Mosca's outside New Orleans, the restaurant makes a chicken dish that my husband can almost replicate with this rosemary.

Sounds like I should go to that restaurant or your place for dinner. 🤣

@@gardenplantswithjimputnam8653 Either one. We're in Austin near Zilker Park, but Mosca's also has baked oysters and sauted shrimp that we are still trying to figure out. It's the kind of restaurant where you can see a Porsche parked next to a pickup. And Happy Mardi Gras! The season begins with the celebration of the gits of the Magi.

Years ago I saw Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) grow Rosemary and knew I had a chance for my rosemary to be a perennial. I planted 3 different one and one has survived for the last 6 years in my 7B zone where the temperature easily dips to the 20’s (quite often but feels like the 10’s). I usually have to cut the dead branches if we had many cold nights in the 10’s but it grows back. I recently cut it as it was overgrown at 4’ due to the unusual warm temperature. One of the best plants for cooking!

I really like this plant and have had success growing it except after the last arctic storm that hit Central Texas, Rosemary didn’t make it. I have since gotten two more plants and put them in pots, one didn’t make it and the other seems to be barely surviving. When I move the pots in full sun the plant looks wilted even after getting watered. I guess I haven’t been able to find a happy place in my yard for it to thrive

Thanks Jim. I’ve been experimenting with herbs as ornamentals and plan to try rosemary in a container this year. I used thyme last year to underplant in some of my containers that have shrubs and was really pleased with how it filled in. The lemon thyme was really fragrant and very low maintenance. I would also like to try Kent oregano, which is a beautiful ornamental but can’t seem to find it here in Ontario, Canada, zone 5b.

I have planted rosemary many places in my yard. It's one of my deer- and rabbit-deterrent attempts. Haven't seen anything eat it, but I was hoping it would keep the critters away from adjacent plantings as well. No luck with that! Also, the rosemary I have planted is not a lovely green, although all of them were when first bought. Over time, they've turned more grayish with tiny red specks. Not very appetizing-looking for cooking with. Guesses as to what's ailing them?
