This highlights the difference between British & American humour. If this was an American show, the guy who walks into the tearoom would be extremely animated listening to Gareth’s ‘conditions.’ In this show, his facial expression never changes, and when Gareth’s finished he simply says ‘is there any milk?’ Brilliantly understated.

It’s of course possible to enjoy both for what they are. But you can’t go away from the UK version. It’s the original form of it and the US show cannot be without it. I know some Americans who think the US show is the original. Scenes like this don’t work for a mass-market US audience. They either plainly don’t find it funny or even remotely amusing, don’t understand why they should, or find the rather cringeworthy/socially awkward nature of the series not a form of comedy they are accustomed to, or enjoy.

Picking sides in this is idiotic. Different shows, different styles. No need for narrow mindedness. I felt more awkward and cringy watching the British version, which is also genius obviously, but I find the US version was more enjoyable overall, being less intense at the cringy part. It's really important to get pass the first season of the US version, they changed it a bit (especially Carell's character) and for the better. Both shows have their iconic lines and scenes.

I agree. I never considered the UK Office series to be a ‘comedy’ and it rarely made me laugh but it was so well scripted and acted that it was eminently watchable, even with the toe-curling cringes.

I'll never, ever get over the fact that they just copied the show and repackaged it for dopey American audiences. It's like a comedian stealing a joke. It's pathetic. ALSO, allow us to get something straight. There is The Office, then there is that watered-down, gimmick, rip off American version of The Office. There ain't no "Oh, do you mean the British version of The Office?"

@@hasan_z Having a good idea is one thing, copying something line by line is something else. There's a German adaption of The Office too (Stromberg) and it's based on the same idea. But it has its own characters, plot and dialog. The US version is a direct copy which is weak IMO (I like it though and saw it first, but I was surprised when I watched the original UK version)

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant complimented each other as they both had their own style of humor and pathos. Plus, there was some improv. Too bad they don't collaborate again. I think each by themselves is not as good as the whole.

@Alaska Music I did the same with US Office, gave up after a few. But then I came back to it an love it the same as I love the UK version Steve Carrell is too much of an upbeat guy to play a David Brent like character which they sussed after the first series and made a huge difference when they changed it especially as it fitted with the US culture better. David felt trapped with life passing him by where as Michael Scott loves his job. That subtle change in tone across the show worked well and allowed it to go on for so long.

@@davoman5781 the US version has no balls. They refuse to ever change the status quo and there are never any consequences to Michael Scott's actions. Despite being an attention-seeking child and a constant boundary violator, he's allowed to leave the office on a high instead of booted out the door as he would be in reality.
