Amazing how no other comedy show still has managed to even come close to this one. A true masterpiece by Gervais and Merchant. Everything from casting and manuscript to acting and the mockumentary format is perfectly executed. I wonder if they knew that when they were creating it. It's impossible to appreciate how revolutionary the office was when it appeared (the UK one, of course) if you were not around at that time. We'd never seen anything like it, it was something completely new and fresh. And over 20 years later, it has been imitated countless times but the original remains unsurpassed.

My funniest bit of Gareth's "so have you got a boyfriend?" is the way you can see him mulling over what to say or whether he should say it. It is almost as though he knows it is a bad move but then can't help himself and just does it.

I didn't realise how much of a comedic genius Mackenzie Crook was until I watched Detectorists recently. Now see Gareth in a new light
@cephalopod73002 жыл бұрын
The part of Gareth is played superbly. All the little mannerisms and awkwardness. Gervais said he originally imagined Gareth as a big guy who thinks he's hard, boasting about being in the Territorial Army etc. Then Mackenzie Crook walked into the audition and didn't look anything like who they had in mind, but they went with him anyway. Good call.

This is extraordinarily good. It's also very British. There are references to the British TV adaptation of The Darling Buds of May ("Perfick!") and a British documentary about the English national football team ("Do I not like that?"). It is rich and painful and sour. I haven't seen the American version. Is it nearly as good? I imagine a translation that reduces the agony in order to appeal to a wider audience. Make it milder like American cheese, and sweeter like American bread.
@al201103 Жыл бұрын
You're pretty much right about the changes to the US version. It is very funny, but it's also quite a different show really. Different humour. People still bicker about which is "the best" but I honestly see them as two very separate shows. And we don't have to choose, we have both :)

The funinest lines ever are the FIRST lines ever. That' whole job interview is hilarious. "I can make that dream come true TO aka for you." and his hand gestures pointing from his hair! "The point is you talk the talk but you dont' walk the walk viza-vi you've not yet past your forklift drivers test." So he just gives the guy the job without one! "Has he past his forklift test? He WRITES the test!" does the Pinocchio nose gesture.🤥 "He's first aid trained yeh" Cathlolic sign of the cross 🤣 "We'll get a CV over to you" does the air keyboard telling the guy he needs to add all those lies in. 😉 Imagine this guy going to work. He cant drive a forklift for shit and when he flattens a guy with said forklift he can't do even CPR or anything because hes not first aid trained! 🤣🤣🤣
