I think I see how this movie got made. Bill Murray signed on because he thought the writer was a Cohen brother... Producers approached a BUNCH of companies saying "Want your product to be in a Garfield movie?" And the companies gave them money... And they hired two of the cheapest, yet prettiest looking actors to play the bland yet attractive leads. All the while the writer spent one evening shitting out the script. Hollywood, everybody.

well, the whole point of that movie was that animated characters can come to life in the real world. So that wouldn't really work anywhere else.

Unless we have actual hand drawn animation instead of real people at all, it wouldn't work. Date Masamune Yeeeaaaah...."Garfield," at the very least, I can see having a story. "Marmaduke"....HOW THE HECK DO YOU MAKE A STORY OUT OF THAT?! YOU CAN'T DO A MOVIE OUT OF THAT! "Beetle Bailey". "Calvin and Hobbes". "Hagar the Horrible". Heck, "Cathy"! All of those you can formulate a story out of. "Marmaduke"...just doesn't seem possible. And just by giving the title character the ability to speak, when he never did in the comic, seems to indicate the people behind the movie knew this too.
@duranls19 жыл бұрын
Date Masamune This was one of those movies where the director pretty much said "You know what character is popular? yeah that one, lets just do a Half ass movie for fast cash!" that sums up Garfield, Marmaduke, Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Hulk (2003), and so on... Surprisingly Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks although critic fails they still resemble some connection with the original material and gave both adults and new generation of children something to enjoy, it might not date well as the originals but a certain percentage of the movie at least tried!

RamtroStudios Dreamworks in a nutshell: A great array of actors, does nothing with them. Just goes to show you, that even with the greatest actors money could buy, if the writing/directing is shit then they will be. You have to work in parallel with each area, a extreme lack of balance.

This movie, and several others, are a testament to how several big Hollywood studios see us as ATMs, and rather than spend their funds on well-made, artistic movies similar to "Apocalypse Now", "The Godfather" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" or proper family movies such as "Back to the Future" and "The Wizard of Oz" they'd prefer to pump out sub-quality, destitute, poor "movies" such as this one, so to speak.
@michaelglasgow65239 жыл бұрын
+Sherif El Sharkawy You just summed up modern Hollywood.
@hotsexspy22679 жыл бұрын
Sherif El Sharkawy Why can't they just let our all-time favorite classics rest in piece. These classics are timeless, the only way you can make a good film that rivals the originals. Is to expand upon what made those films great in the first place and see what the faults are in those films and fix them. Then when that's done, try to make it's into it's own thing. That's how you create something timeless, obviously it's easier said then done. I have one question, did 2001 A Space Odyssey do poorly at the box office when it was released, and wasn't it critically panned back then too?
@goldifying9 жыл бұрын
Hotsex spy to put it briefly, it received polarizing reviews on initial release but picked up an audience due to its association with psychedelic/counter culture and of course the genius branding of "the ultimate trip", specifically young people tripping balls during the star gate sequence. It actually wound up being on of the highest grossing films that year (I think the Graduate was no. 1, crazy right?) I don't know what you mean by letting classics rip but I wholly believe you can't have a good film without a good script. More power to actually talented creative individuals, the auteurs, and quality control on the writing; less about ego, that's how you make quality, timeless cinema
@sherifelsharkawyful9 жыл бұрын
Hotsex spy In my opinion, some movies are just better left on their own, because sometimes even attempts to capitalize on a movie's plot just end up either derailing the franchise or are just a desperate attempt to make money. Take 'Die Hard' and 'The Terminator', two well-renowned action franchises. Each of them have had follow-up movies in the current decade; 'Terminator: Genisys' and 'Die Hard 4'(or was it 5?) Both movies were sequels to two excellent action movies, yet the new movies were abysmal and were only released to make a quick buck. You can tell just off the lazy writing, uninteresting villains and overall poor production. Movies such as 'Taxi Driver', 'Goodfellas' and 'Pulp Fiction' are the caliber of movies better left alone, since they are exceptional in their own right. If only the business moguls of Hollywood would understand that.
@hotsexspy22679 жыл бұрын
Goldifying I for once, actually agree with what you're saying, I'm in the same mindset about the importance of writing. However, I find that all sides need to be as equally balanced in order to make a film shine. Yes I do think writing should be treated with extra care. Sherif El Sharkawy Yep, another example is the Psycho remakes on a film that really didn't need to be remade, It was Hitchcock's ultimate film, next to Vertigo.

9:00-9:06 That's a great example of how to ruin a perfectly good joke. Garfield going "Chuck E.
