Hot Take: Garfield is a case for why derivative works are important for art, and thusly why the public domain is too, because of how much more interesting he is in anciliary works than in his main "text". IE, stuff like the 80s animated series, Lasagna Cat, Lumpytouch's horror-themed pixel animations, hell even Davis' own weird spinoffs like Garfield His 9 Lives! ...I'm not even joking, the character works well enough in multiple formats to show that openness to re-interpretation is wildly underrated as a quality of characters, and that we need to expand the public domain and fair use to allow for more of that more freely.

Uber isn't 'a massively profitable company'- its actually been a loss-making company since it began. That's not an accident. The whole idea behind the brand is that they'll use corporate subsidies to undercut existing taxi companies in hundreds of cities, drive the competition out of business... then replace all their drivers with robot self-driving cars, and rake in the dollars. That's not a conspiracy theory, that's Uber's acknowledged- and extensively publicised- long-term business plan. Unregulated capitalism isn't 'fair competition', its inevitably a shortcut to oligarchy.

Interesting sidenote... I just looked up what an "Accredited nutritionist" actually denotes in Ontario, Canada and it turns out... not much. While the terms registered dietitian and/or RD are protected by law, requiring you to take an undergraduate course and get a government recognised accreditation, "nutritionist" is only protected in Alberta, Nova Scotia and Quebec. Meaning Nathen Mazri likely only ever had a 4 week private training seminar or something, because if he was an RD, he would probably use that title. Not to distract from how absurd/bordering on parody this whole thing is, but it's an extra layer of BS that the co-founder would take on an official sounding, but ultimately vacuous title to appear more competent.
@veovis5235 жыл бұрын

No. The idea is to capture market share by any means necessary, usually by abandoning profit for the first several years, and then receive an endless windfall after the market has been dominated by your product. It's the same principle as drug dealers giving away your first hit. Then you'll come back for more, and be eager to pay. Noone cares to point out that this entire business model is predicated on the existence of monopolies, which are SUPPOSED to be outlawed by our society, but which in practice are welcomed.
@andleepfarooqui78745 жыл бұрын
Brian Koontz That doesn’t work in Uber’s case because lack of loyalty, lack of strong network effects and low elasticity of supply compared to tech companies: just because Uber doesn’t pay for cars/car repair doesn’t mean the costs of the business model aren’t passed on in reduced driver count etc. It’s been 9 years - most tech startups that took initial losses were profitable within 3. Uber is a scam. Short it.
@nikoGoroz5 жыл бұрын
@@briankoontz1 Let's say uber does what you say, becomes a monopolist. There are no taxis, no any other transport firms (I will stay quiet about buses, trains, trams, subways, private cars, renting cars, renting motors etc. etc. for your argument's convenience). So UBER is the god of city transport, and dictates the prices for consumers and wages for the employees. Why wouldn't there be created a second firm, called let's say UTER which out competes UBER, the way UBER out competed everyone else? The only answer is the state intervention. If the state were to increase the minimal wage for drivers (could do anything which has to do with side supply), the small company wanting to take over UBER with prices, for consumer wouldn't be able to outcompete the rival. Only with cooperation with state can UBER become a monopolist. And that is not free market, that is state controlled market. What is capitalist is free of state intervention. Where the state and business meet, there is corruption. I wonder how you make sense of that.

@@nikoGoroz boohoo, the government won't let me pay my workers even less than uber already pays their workers to lose even more money to capture market until profitability. What a fascist state!!1 And yes, I take uber often. Also lyft. Just pointing out your argument is fallacious as shit, hypothetical or not.

Hey Thought Slime, love you , love your vids. At one point in my life I owned all the Garfield books in existence for about a year until they made more and read them so often that I could quote them verbatim and describe the scenes like a walking Garfield meme generator. Far be it from me to pass up an opportunity for my random obsessions to be useful once in a while. So I am delighted...or something...to inform you that yes, there is actually an arc where Garfield ends up living on the streets for a while. He meets his extended family who are all squatting in the ruins of an old Italian restaurant where he first discovered the glories of lasagna as a kitten. No I do not recall if they explain how he ended up getting found by Jon and forgetting them, I'm not certain it was ever explained.

I agree and respect that. However capitalism is the only system that promotes people doing idiotic things not because they think they are actually a good idea, but because they gamble on finding enough dumb people to buy their product. And the thing with lottery is, winner takes all.
@cameronrhanna5 жыл бұрын
@@KilgoreTroutAsf Raiding the next village over is a dumb idea in the greater scheme of advancing humanity and depends on the dumb people in the next village not being prepared to resist aggression. Advertising useless goods can also be seen as a form of aggression, or at least exploitative deception. Advancing yourself at the expense of vulnerable others is not uniquely capitalist. Capitalism is peculiar in how efficiently and peacefully it facilitates this (not that that's a good thing, necessarily; rather the enemy you see than the one you don't).
@KilgoreTroutAsf5 жыл бұрын
Since we are discussing economic systems, it is safe to assume the pre-existence of a state or some other political order that precludes the use of violence within its reach, at the very least the kind of violence you suggested in your comment. Because no political system, no matter how incompetent, is going to tolerate villages within its borders raiding one another, I don't see how your example has any relevance to my original point. Also, "peace" under capitalism is purely incidental. Leaving aside the discussion about the horrors of systemic violence, capitalist countries have been at war with one another over colonial conquests and global domination all through the 18th, 19th and half of the 20th century, until somebody invented a bomb powerful enough to destroy civilization, and politicians figured out they better learn how to calm down and try to solve problems through diplomacy. And even so, the US kept fighting proxy wars, invading and financing coups in more than 50 countries only so the "peaceful" capitalists could sack their natural resources and virtually enslave their population as cheap labor.
