I love elephant garlic 🧄 I foraged some years ago from an old farm paddock where the house was long gone. The garlic would have been from the original homestead garden. Now I grow it each year and pass on cloves to my friends to keep the old heritage garlic growing here in Australia xx Cathi xx

I live in Northern California and Gilroy is known as the garlic town. They grow garlic year round there. So I may have to go there to get me some garlic I can grow at home.

Thanks for talking about corms! I found some last week when I harvested our garlic. I even tasted one. Yeah. Don't do that. Blah! I'll try your method to see how it goes. I made Fire Cider this year. It tastes sooo good, and I'm not usually a spicy flavor lover, but I crave the Fire Cider. I have eaten the minced garlic clove straight up a few times, and it makes me feel woozy-weird for a few minutes after. Means it's potent and actively doing something for my body.

After pulling up the corm; which at this time is one full bulb like an onion; how long do you wait before replanting for it to grow into a full cloved garlic head? Does it have to sit and cure a day or two before replanting?
@VWFamilyFarm4 жыл бұрын
I would treat it just like a full bulb that has cloves. Pull it in summer and then re-planet in the fall. Some people will just leave them in the ground until the next year. I haven’t tried that.

Do those corms require stratification or scarification? I planted two handfuls of them last year and not a single one grew. Yet, somehow, I have volunteer garlic grow in the garden where I have grown it before. Oklahoma State U. Extension horticulture specialist told my local extension guy it was not possible to reproduce elephant garlic except from cloves. I'm confused. Could those volunteer plants have come from the tops; the part that appears to be a seed head?

I, too, need just a little more info. We are pulling our garlic soon. We r zone 5b. Those little corms you say need to be put in a moist dirt and sprouted. Then planted for about 8 months. Then pulled and replanted. By my calculations, those corm sprouts will be ready for harvest around May the next year. Garlic is planted in late fall,right? Will these corm garlic seeds I just pulled be okay to keep till fall?
@VWFamilyFarm4 жыл бұрын
I would sprout them in a bucket for a while before you’re ready to plant this fall and then they should be on the same schedule as the rest of your garlic. Hope that makes sense.

We have used garlic on a tooth infection and it cleared the infection right up. It was a weekend when it happened and so my husband used it and by the time he got an appt on monday and had the tooth extracted the dentist was shocked there was no infection. Garlic will burn your inside of your mouth but it doesn't hurt as bad as an infected tooth.
