@ActiveIdeas so a week down and already a few pet peeves 🤣 1st: the lack of lower setting for brightness. At the lowest, it's still really bright. A bit too bright when sleeping. 2nd: I'm used to 15-20 days of battery life. That might be a deal breaker whenever the instinct 3 comes out if it has the integrated flashlight. 3rd: the lack of data available on the watch faces, that being said, being AMOLED...that would drain even more battery but even on the 9 Peak and Vertical, they could offer more info at a glance. 4th: mine was made in China. What I like: case shape and size. Weight. The phone application. Heartrate accuracy and GPS, way better than any Garmin I ever owned

I am a bit hesitant as last week Suunto announced they move all their support, production and data storage is moved to China. One of the selling points to keep it in Europe is gone now. Not sure if I want all my data transferred to China. Based on that only one left is Garmin with data storage in the US. Coros is China, not sure about Polar tbh.
@ActiveIdeas2 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s a tough decision. In terms of sustainability Suunto is one of the best options available. Most of their products are fully carbon compensated for the lifetime of the device. But for data protection you might be better off with Garmin. Although saying this I’ve experienced Garmin connect servers going offline about 8 times since using Garmin.. one of these was a confirmed data breach. I’ve never had anything like this with Suunto. In the small print we’re probably signing away a lot of our data to this companies despite our choice. Whilst I assume it would be anonymised I’m genuinely concerned about most companies approaches to data harvesting and where this leads in the future with A.I.

I want to get a heart rate strap to improve accuracy when I am training and then wear the watch and use that monitor when I am cycling and doing daily activities to get the best of both worlds. What do you think about the Suunto vertical compared to the Garmin Fenix 8? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts. Is there much difference between the Garmin HRM0 Pro Plus and the Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt. Which do you think has the best for like indoor sport modes etc? I am leaning towards the Garmin, but the price makes it a difficult one.

Hey Jacob! Honestly thanks for taking the time to write this comment, it was really nice and put a smile on face today, I appreciate the kind words 🌟 If you plan to wear a chest strap then you can get away with choosing any watch you like. During rest and sleep these watches perform very similar and it's not until you use a chest strap where you see massive accuracy improvements. If you're into multiple sports... I prefer Suunto as the app makes it really easy to track your training load across a plethora of sports. Suunto Vertical is my favourite watch of the past year and a half. I've loved every second of using it and am always blown away by the battery life. Compared to the Fenix 8 amoled you will see extremely better battery life with Suunto, I prefer the compass. On garmin you get a nicer screen and a flashlight which I also love using. Im actually filming a video between the Suunto chest strap and the Garmin chest strap. Garmin HRM-Pro Plus has bluetooth and ANT+ .. as far as I can tell the Suunto only has bluetooth and ive had this be an issue at my local gym which uses concept2 machines with ANT+ connections. For indoor sports modes ive enjoyed both.. you might find more sports on Garmin maybe, with specific data screens specially for that sport. But there's not much on it! I feel you mate, the price difference is WILD. if you can afford it.. why not try it out, you can always return the watch if you change your mind or resell it on eBay. Best of luck finding your watch mate 👊🏼

Does the Round-trip Course feature work well for hiking trails on the Fenix 8? In my experience with the Forerunner 955, the Round-trip feature is limited to road running and biking. Every Round-trip course I have attempted only gives me paved roads, ignoring the many great hiking trails around me.
@ActiveIdeas3 ай бұрын
Hmm, great question mate! I’ve seen both behaviours in my tests but it definitely seems to like roads more than trails so I guess you’re onto something. I believe on both the 965 and this Fenix 8 you can turn on “avoid roads” maybe that would improve its trail finding. I’ve not had a chance to test this out yet 👊🏽

It seems that Garmin hasn’t updated the processor on top end models since the original Fenix 7 and Epix 2, even through the Pro versions of those. And now on the new Fenix 8. With a new UI and more features you can really see the aging internals struggling. To add insult to injury Garmin upped the prices.
@ActiveIdeas3 ай бұрын
You’re not wrong Jason, it seems so! I do hope that lots can be ironed out in software updates as the bugs I’ve been experiencing are pretty unacceptable for the cost of the device.. but in my past few weeks of testing I think it’s clear to see there are massive hardware limitations which are unfortunate, as not much can be done about a struggling processor.
@JasonRaneses3 ай бұрын
@@ActiveIdeasIt’s a bit weird, considering say the Forerunner 965 which also has a decently heavy graphical UI. You see quite less lag on that model - despite the processor discussion, it seems Garmin is going through growing pains as they attempt to merge the differences between operating system implementations across the lineup.
@ActiveIdeas3 ай бұрын
I feel like it’s pretty self inflicted! They have suuuch an aggressive “pay to play” scheme with lots of features being limited by software.. where they actually can’t keep up with it. Another example of this is the devision between Epix Gen 2 Pro and the Fenix 8.. there’s no reason why last years watch with the exact same processor can’t get this year’s updates. But because they want to force customers to spend more through planned obsolescence they’re now going to have to build completely different software models for the Fenix 8 compared to the Epix Gen 2 Pro.. it seems like a doubling of the work for a worsened customer experience. A risky game to play when Apple are at everyone’s heels and Suunto are heavily undercutting their pricing 🌟 It’s only so much longer they’ll get away with this framework in my opinion

I must disagree with your opinion. First of all, I'm not a professional athlete or a fanboy of either brand, I just like to be active and do a number of activities (both indoor and outdoor). That being said, I've have had a few watches from Garmin, Apple and Suunto (3 units of the Vertical Titanium Solar, more on that later), on which I base my opinions upon. It's important to know what you're paying for and why some devices are more expensive than others (yes, the Fenix 8 is a bit overpriced but, being brand new, companies obviously try to milk the cow). Bang for buck, I think the Fenix 7 Pro/Epix Pro are probably the best (sport) watches available now. The following arguments are based on my experience (Garmin Epix, Instinct 2, Fenix 7 Pro and Fenix 8) VS the Suunto Vertical. Regarding the maps, there's much to be said here. Maps on Suunto are image tiles with a layer on top for routes (when you're using one). On Garmin, maps are drawn on device, with multiple layers that allow to have dynamic street names (they change sides to avoid colliding visually with your position indicator), POIs and other info. Also, like you mention, they are routable on the watch itself, which makes it a much more valuable tool. When you mention that maps are more fluid with Suunto due to the compass responsiveness, that only happens to be true if you're not moving, otherwise the orientation is "locked" to the direction you're following (as it should and as it works with Garmin). The compass itself is as smooth or probably even more on Garmin than on Suunto. Some argue that the Suunto app is better and that it lets you easily create routes and transfer them to the watch. Great it does so because, like previously mentioned, the watches do not allow to create routes on device. Even so, for Garmin devices you can use the Garmin Explore app, which lets you do the exact same with the extra advantage of letting you do so OFFLINE for map areas you download in the app for offline usage. Those map + navigation differences alone make the Garmin watches better tools as you don't depend on your phone. On GPS accuracy, I lean towards what you mention here: Garmin has been always more accurate than Suunto for me (and does not map my activity through houses when I go on sidewalks). On the software side (both on previous devices as well as on a Fenix 8) maybe I'm lucky to not have faced the issues you have. One thing I love is that, by connecting to a computer using the Garmin Express app, you can easily update your watch and it's maps, which is way faster than relying on the watch connectivity via Wi-Fi. Map downloads on Suunto must be done on the watch and take forever. Some might say Suunto's software is better because it's simple and Garmin's too packed and has a lot of useless features, I must disagree. You can configure the watch exactly how you want it, hide stuff you don't need and just use whatever suits you best. The new Fenix 8/Enduro 3 have a new (or new major version of the) OS. That does not mean the older models (or at least the most recent) are discontinued or won't receive new updates, maps, etc. It means that the new features built on top of this/that take advantage of the new OS won't be ported to the older one. You can still use very old Garmin watches today and they still work fine and sync properly with the app. I've had 3 Suunto Vertical because they all had software bugs that ranged from annoying to showstoppers: instances where the watch froze or restarted mid-activity, touch stopped working, screen light wouldn't turn off, battery drain... The only way I found to fix the issues: get back to using a Garmin device. Regarding the Suunto (Vertical) software, only recently they added the possibility to pick your own complications, though with very limited options, and to install additional watch faces; you can't pause an activity and resume it later; you can't leave an activity and do something else while it is ongoing. Battery life on the Suunto Vertical is great (when it works properly) but not relevant if you compare it to a bigger Fenix (solar) or, especially, an Enduro. Heart rate accuracy is way more reliable on Garmin (especially on Fenix 7 Pro/Epix Pro/Fenix 8, due to the Elevate v5 sensor). I must say that the Apple Watch (any recent one) is the most reliable of every device I've had though. Same goes for sleep tracking, if that's valuable to you. Much more could be said but here are some other advantages of Garmin worth mentioning: 1. Flashlight (can be a game-changer) 2. Body battery + stress tracking 3. Multitasking (you can't even go out of an activity on Suunto) 4. 5-button layout 5. Garmin Pay 6. "Resume later" feature 7. Smart features (if you care) are way better on Garmin - notifications configurable per app, alerts when the phone disconnects, ability to answer calls (on the Fenix 8) and reply to messages 8. Round-trip routing (and dynamic round-trip routing on the Fenix 8) 9. Live track 10. Safety features + crash detection 11. Ecosystem 12. Garmin Connect web app 13. Brand support 14. Dive features (Fenix 8) 15. Ski maps + golf maps 16. Better weather widget What I liked about the Suunto Vertical: 1. (Hardware) design 2. Battery life (when it wasn't draining due to some memory leak/process running in the background) 3. Screen when facing direct sunlight Only advantage of the Suunto Race S I see: price.

Nice take here! You make some super cool points! Definitely don’t agree with all of them but overall I completely get what you’re saying 🔥❤️ I definitely love and respect both brands but it does seem Suunto don't get as much respect as they deserve sometimes. Overall I have been a Garmin user for longer though ☺️ Course Creation vs Suunto Map App - With regards to the Suunto's appeal being much better for map creation.. I do think this Is important. On the Fenix 8 I tried to get it to navigate to the beach 40 miles away from my location... I left it for nearly 20 minutes and it just stayed on the "calculating route" screen. I do think offline routing is fantastic, and can definitely be a life saver when out of reach from phone signal BUT it's not practical to use in real life. For 5km-15km course creation.. the fenix 8 is great (although I rarely need a map for this distance). For anything above this distance (definitely will be using map) using the app is far superior. Also maybe because I'm not a speedy runner, when im running ultras or in the mountains I might as well be stood still as far as the watch is concerned 🤣 and the Compass movement of the Map on Suunto vs Garmin is definitely night and day 🌟 Discontinuation of products - I guess what I'm referring to here is that I bought a brand new Fenix 7 Pro last year for nearly $1000. As of last week Garmin have confirmed to DCrainmaker + DesFit that this watch along with all the other Pro models from last year will not be receiving the new software UI upgrade. This is highly aggressive planned obsolesce as it's publicly known that the CPU in the Fenix 7 vs the Fenix 8 are the same. AKA.. they could bring most, if not all of these software updates to the Fenix 7 Pro and Epix range but they're choosing not to. I think this is highly worrying for a buyer about to spend over $1000 on a watch especially as there's a recent leak of the Fenix 8 Pro (The5Krunner blog) projecting a Q2 2025 release. That would suck if you bought a Fenix 8 now and then 6 months later get told you're missing out on easily upgradable software feature (of course hardware-limitations are different and understandable). I saw on reddit yesterday (and have confirmed) that Garmin are now starting to charge for their natively built watch faces on connectIQ. Prices of like £4.99 here in the UK too. I just think they need to balance the "profits : customer" scale. Show some more love 🙈 Battery life - The Vertical Solar was the best battery life watch I've tested so far (out of the Fenix 7 pro, the Vertix 2s and the Enduro 2 etc). Although, I have an Enduro 3 being delivering in the next hour haha and I'm sure this will take the crown now 😍 Also, I noticed when filming B-roll for this video outside in bright daylight I had both watches set to high brightness and I think it's evident that the Race S simply is much more clear to see. Hope you enjoyed my reply ❤️ Thanks again for taking the time to write all that! And all the best with your adventures... let's get it! 👊🏼

@Michael-vf5idАй бұрын
@@RicardoFerrolho The problem is the garmin 8 cpu sucks and is too slow and no tweaking is going to fix that.
@RicardoFerrolhoАй бұрын
@@Michael-vf5id I totally agree with it being slow and about the price point. Hence my opinion that the Fenix 7 Pro or Epix Pro are the better deals and do the same thing (apart from some extra smart features and some diving qualification, being the flagship model they want it to be a do-it-all device). The speed could be improved with more optimization but nothing that would make it feel as fluid as an Apple Watch, for example. The Suunto (Vertical, which is what I’ve based my opinion upon) isn’t any fast as well though. And, for the same price, I just can’t say it is better than a Fenix 7 Pro in any way, except battery, when it’s not draining due to the bugs they still haven’t fixed (in a 1.5 year old watch). And my opinion was before the recent privacy policy update, which takes it to a whole new level, but that’s a different topic. To each their own and lucky us who have a choice.

Good video! But i have to say it again as i have said before. Why do Garmin need 5 buttons? Its a just so bad, and during winter when using gloves its even worse.

Great video. And yes, I am planning on purchasing the Fenix 8. But I am now concerned about your comment about pay to play. Are you saying that all these wonderful features that Garmin offers on their watch require a paid subscription to use? Yes, I do realize that if want to use Garmin satellite tracking it requires a paid subscription, but that's the only subscription I need to have. Correct?

@@Stephen6492 you don't have to pay for anything on the watch. Maybe for some 3th party apps you want to download in Connect IQ.

I’m referring to there lack of product updates over time. For example, the Fenix 7 Pro edition is only a year old. Garmin have told Des & Ray that none of these software UI updates will be coming to the Fenix 7 Pro. When they make new features, they rarely update last generations’s product with it so you can quite quickly get keft behind. Hope this helps Stephen ❤️

Suunto could improve their OHR by either designing their own or switch to a different vendor. While using a strap is fine, the magic eight ball readings it can give just sitting at a desk or on a walk or hiking without a strap is unacceptable.
@ActiveIdeas3 ай бұрын
Fair observation Sean! Suunto’s Race S is housing brand new heart rate hardware.. generally, I’ve seen this to be better than what Suunto is known for in terms of accuracy 🔥 As always though, there’s room for improvement.. personally, I’d like to see improvements at resting heart rate

How strong is vibrate? Can you feel it strong? Garmin epix 7 was rubbish vibrate, too light to feel it. I return that watch in the shop. I need to feel strong vibrate when in coming call came. because I use ear protectors in my noisy work all day.
@ActiveIdeas3 ай бұрын
I think the vibrate is stronger on Suunto lol! The Fenix 8 does feel kind of weak.. bear in mind I do have the 43mm (smaller) version though, so maybe the bigger Fenix 8s have a stronger vibrate?! I did have a Enduro 3 delivered yesterday (51mm) so I’ll be able to test this out and see if the vibrate is stronger 👊🏽

Do you have any HR accuracy experience for non-running workouts? Like rowing, weight training? My Race S seems to struggle in those workouts, showing really low heat rate, unless I move my watch and wipe off sweat from under the watch.

It’s super hard (some would argue impossible) to validate sleep tracking accuracy without proper laboratory settings unfortunately. In terms of sleep duration, both have been great for sleep and napping.. auto detection is great and results look really good ❤️ Also HRV reported from both is usually exactly the same which is good 🔥 At the moment I don’t have the equipment to accurately measure sleep cycles 🫶🏽 Thanks for the comment

Hahaha, you caught me at a good time to respond to comments (when I was snacking in the kitchen)🙈 Genuinely there’s nothing between these two watches with sleep tracking .. both perform fantastically! Personally I do prefer Garmin’s body battery over Suunto’s resources but both have morning reports. I actually prefer how Suunto display your sleep duration and sleep duration over the past 7 days. As someone who struggles with insomnia Suunto make it really clear how and where you you can improve your sleep hygiene. Lastly, Garmin have “sleep coach”’which will tell you to get an extra hour in bed or not.. and the interplay between stress, exercise, sleep & more will feed into this metric! Pretty cool but haven’t really used it much personally yet. Oh and I guess there’s a Jet Lag advisor on Garmin if you’re someone who flys.. ✈️ Hope this helps mate ❤️
