Days later... okay, two days later after I published this video and I still have yet to plug my Instinct Solar into the USB charger. I just checked and my watch reads 2 Days left or 5%. And this means I am going on 9 Days off a charge of only 74% when I unboxed this smartwatch and only charged for a few minutes. Over the past nine days it was able to get around another 5 - 7% extra battery, perhaps even more, as I walked outside, left it outside charging in the sun, and while driving during daylight, yeah, and wow! Have I used GPS? Yes, over four hours of GPS during this initial nine-day battery test, went swimming twice, slept with it every night, tracking my HR, and even did the battery-sucking Pulse Ox for several nights before turning it off. As a guestimate, this Garmin gadget has also buzzed me about 300 different notifications too. Any pithy thoughts...?

As far as solar is concerned, I've had a Casio G-Shock solar for about 15 years. The capacitor (it doesn't use battery) died after 10 years and cost quite a lot to replace but I'm sold on solar watches which must have advanced since I got my Casio. Only thing I'd change is my sight - now I can't read the screen clearly in the dark using the light! Having massive heart attack last April, I'd like a watch to monitor a few functions and display hr from Polar HR10 strap so I can maximize exercise efforts while stretching rehab advice to its limit. Corus Pace 2 and this look ideal for my price bracket once I start getting full pension payments this April.

If the watch face was the whole of the screen, you would have no solar panel there which means you will not have the battery boosting effect which is a huge feature on this watch. Look at a Garmin Fenix 6 (hugely more expensive as it has many extra features). It has a small ring around the outer edge of the screen which is the solar panel...... and you will get very little extra charge on daylight exposure as there is insufficient solar panel to draw the charge. It's all about what is the most important thing for you I guess. There is always a trade off. I like the idea of longer battery life and do not need the features on some of the other watches so have opted for this one. I am hoping to get used to less info space on the screen when it arrives.
@PeterHerget3 жыл бұрын
There are many trade-offs when it comes to smartwatches or smart sport watches. Yes, I consider the Instinct Solar a smartwatch, yet, it doesn't have an A.I. (Siri, Bixby, or Google Assistant) that you can ask questions or set a reminder. In a way the Instinct by Garmin is an extremely smart sports watch with a wicked fast charging solar panel for emergencies and wonderful battery life. The screen size, shape, overall screen real-estate takes some getting used to. For me, after about a week I enjoyed the high contrast, black, white & gray screen. The circle in the top right always being there is still a little strange even 10 months later. Yeah, I need to strap this back on and post another review. Back to solar panels on the watch and the ability to charge the battery, yes, the Instinct Solar charges about 300% faster than the Garmin Fēnix 6X Pro Solar. I have a video about this and I need to do a few more tests and then I'll publish it...

This is what I need. Thanks a lot for the in-depth review man. I will buy this watch. If this watch has Vo2 Max, it's perfect. I am wondering if this watch can withstand violent forces. I do boxing workouts almost every day, with this watch on my wrist, I can have some data about my body, like heart rate, burnt calories, but not sure if it can survive repeated shots I land on the bags.
@PeterHerget3 жыл бұрын
Garmin designed this watch to be rugged, similar to the Casio G-SHOCK wearables. That being said, nope, I am not a boxer. I had a speed bag growing up, and yet, not very little about the sport. If you are looking for a rugged Garmin that has all of the features like this Instinct Solar (that I still have and use over a year later) there is also the Garmin Tactix Delta series that Garmin designed for the military. I had this watch for two months and then sold it to a friend, and yes, it was very rugged and tested to be dropped and banged through life's activities. The Garmin Tactix has been around for years and is a bit more expensive. You can check online for used one and there are Garmin Factory Outlet stores around too. Better yet though, each year R.E.I. places their watches online and there are fantastic deals to be had and if you don't like the Garmin you purchase via R.E.I. on yeah, their return polices are wonderful along with their customer service. I've been a customer of theirs since I was a teenager. Happy shopping, and yes, I still recommend the Garmin Instinct Solar.

I've seen people in reviews throw these watches against rocks, so they can probably handle punch G forces just fine. If you want really accurate heart rate data, get yourself something like a polar h9 and wear it on your back and connect it to your watch. Wrist-based heart rate is a little slow to react and fares even worse when getting jostled around rapidly.

How long does it last without solar?
@PeterHerget3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the highlighted comment 👍I've had this Garmin Instinct Solar since Thanksgiving 2020 and without any solar light from the sun the battery still easily makes it 10 - 15 days off a single charge. Now, if you use the Pulse Ox at night to track your blood-oxygen levels, well, that zaps about 5 - 7% battery life in one night of sleeping and the Garmin gadget will only endure about 7 - 8 days with GPS, smartwatch notifications, tracking sleep, flights of stairs, all-day heart rate stats, and using various widgets.

24 days would be possible if you use battery-saver mode, disabled Sp02, limited your GPS usage, and disabled notifications from Social Media apps. If you do some fun searching Garmin has public documentation on how they achieve the days of battery life that their marketing team promotes.

Yep, you are correct - a USB-A port connected a 5W Apple brick charger for 15 minutes will provide more juice than four hours in the sunlight. However, that is not the point of a solar smart watch or the Garmin Power Glass. The Instinct Solar gives the User, runner, cyclist, hiker, and adventure the opportunity to stay outside longer and still track their activities getting awesome feedback. I did a 30 mile bike ride over 2.5 hours and my battery % only dropped about 20 to 30% less with the solar charging features. Garmin states on their website that only solar charging your watch battery is not recommended at this time. As technology advances... who knows, maybe Garmin will release a Qi compatible watch with more efficient solar glass and we will only have to use a wireless charger for our favorite Garmin gadgets every four months 🤞🤞

I did further testing since this video was posted and... while walking outside I was able to get the Garmin Instinct Solar to charge 3 - 4% per hour. GPS tracking while walking/running/cycling burns up about 1 - 3% battery per hour. Ergo, if you are working out, tracking your status outside in the sunlight, and using GPS, yes, you could realistically workout forever and not run out of battery. For a marathon runners this is awesome news!!! Now, we just need Garmin to add solar watchfaces to more of their gadgets. I would simply love to the see the Garmin vivoactive 5 to get a solar upgrade later this year in 2021!

After further testing, well... YES! If you're outdoors with the Instinct Solar and the smartwatch gets a solid 2 to 5 hours of direct sunlight, yep, it should never run out of juice. The Instinct Solar even comes with a hidden feature: 1. it charges when it is completely off 2. if the watch battery dies completely down to 0% all you have to do is let take a sunbath for a few hours in direct sunlight and it will turn back on and give you GPS, heart-rate, GPS coordinates, count your steps, sleep, stairs - the works! I tested the feature thrice and it blew my mind. I really thought that even a solar watch would need to be plugged in a wall outlet after the battery % reached zero.

I wish they will upgrade the instinct 2 solar build for stainless steel buttons and back opened with small screws and stainless Basel in the front. Like the Casio Potrek prw 3100 which has great case . The solar is huge since as a normal watch you do not have to use external charger which is a major major major yes why to buy it instead of the solar protrek. If Garmin will copy the Casio protrek prw 3100 case to the instinct 2 solar you will get the best army watch . People then will go with Garmin instead of Casio leaving Polar and Sunto field watches far being also in regard to casing durability . Today the opening of the Garmin instinct 2 is not very nice since there are no screws . Though no one will probably open a solar watch still it is nice to know it has screws for opening as a standard .

Nice product 💡 ideas. You should send an email or call both Garmin & Casio. I have nearly purchased the new Instinct Solar 2.0 about five times. I saw in person at Costco last week, nah, I wore my sunburst yellow Instinct Solar all day today and it still holds a three to four week charge 🤓

what are the white particles on screen? are these only dusts that can be wiped off or particles inside the screen?
@PeterHerget11 ай бұрын
That was just dust or a reflection. The screen on my Garmin Instinct 2X Solar is slightly better than this model from 2021. I cannot wait to buy the Garmin Instinct 3X Solar with the following hopes & dreams: 1. Garmin Instinct 3X Solar will come in orange or burnt orange 2. sapphire solar screen 3. colour screen like the vivoactive 4 4. better goal animations like the Star Wars watches Garmin made over two years ago 5. a quick-release watch band style that both the fēnix and EPIX watch bezels utilize 6. a USB-C Garmin charger 7. factors/insight to Body Battery like the EPIX 2
