I've had several people over the course of a few videos that question the distances and numbers with my R10. I was skeptical at first also. But time and again, it has proven to be pretty accurate overall. Now, it's not uncommon to see spin rates off, because it doesn't measure spin, it calculates it. Also, smash and clubhead speed can be off because it will get the ball speed correct, but make a mistake with reading clubhead speed, and you'll see smash at 1.61 or 1.59, haha. Which is not possible. But, it reconciles the two, so that the end result is correct. A few quirks, but a terrific device for the money.

I’ve posted a few times here about my struggles with accurate distances with the R10. On course, I hit my 7 iron 155 yards. Hitting into a net in my basement, I consistently get distances of 100-110 yards. If I change the elevation to 6000 feet, I’m able to get up to 125 yards but still way off. I’ve been working with Garmin support for about 3 weeks now and still have not been able to get correct distances. Because of this, I don’t trust any of the numbers. Unfortunately I have not had the positive experience that most have but I’m still trying. 😀

That a great way to compare, Sim vs real. I can't recall if I have seen someone do it like this before, you just always take their word on how far the can hit it. I appreciate the transparency especially since, I have recently bought the R10. I do know for sure that my Driver with it is short about a good 30-40 yards, but the weird part is the other numbers, "launch angle, angle of attack, back spin, club speed, ball speed" all looked good.... so I would be interested if you have a way to test these numbers and forget the distance to see how accurate are they, because if it is accurate, then it could be used as a good training tool for those metrics.

One thing I’ve noticed is when I go from simulator to real course my numbers are a little shorter but we’re giving ourselves a perfect lie on the hitting mats, on real grass we’re hitting more down and taking divots. It appears that when you are hitting the 9 iron you still have the R10 set up for the gap wedge (gw). I would think that could be the reason it was reading shorter distances with the 9 iron and seemed to be spot on for the other clubs.

Had my r10 for a week now and have been doing a lot of my own testing. One thing I have found is that when I'm hitting in my net, the read for direction is off. It does not read a draw properly. This may be the higher launch angle and not having enough time for a proper read but on the course it definitely picks my direction a lot better. You swing similar to me where you trap the ball (especially on wedges) when I feel like I "sling" a wedge, it gets the left miss very wrong but if I feel like I "punch" a straight wedge... There is much better results. Try a punch and try feeling a neural swing path and see if you get the same results. I think it just struggles with a traped face
@davidmaxfieldgolf2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all radar units will have this problem as they can’t directly see the impact of clubface hitting the ball at impact. Trackman has the same issue. But it’s not a bad thing because it helped you correct your club path in your swing. That’s what they use to determine the shot shape.

Another great R10 video, really like what you're doing. Personally, the Garmin Golf app hasn't been as off as others complain about, but I have a very slow club head speed due to age & a left elbow injury. My preference is still Awesome/e6 more due to options and tracking, but I really like that you took it to your course and actually paced it out. I might do the same. When I first got the R10 I played my local and the first hole (par 5) I could not par on the R10 due to short off the tee distance when I've par'd that hole many times in real life so it's interesting to see this comparison. I might have to look into the weather/humiditiy/sea level settings overall and see if I've been giving myself a bonus in other apps. I see you're in QLD - without too much info are you on the coast? Another Awesome video with more information and details on the R10! Only thing tough for me often is meters vs yards as I’m in the US. Lol But I get it overall. I think you’re right though, we “think” we know, but this proves often we don’t and we blame the electronics when it’s actually us and right very often. You’ve been a MASSIVE help in my R10 garage since setup over this last month and I thank you for that. Keep ‘em comin

Thanks Chris, for the conversation to yards just add 10% 😊 and with the graphite shafts, yes I use them and absolutely love them. Stiffer and lighter, so faster swing speeds and more ball speed. I’ll never go back to steel. My back feel better too

Great test video. My question that now arises, is garmin actually giving you correct numbers and Awesome telling you you’re hitting further than you actually are? I know personally i agree that lateral on garmin kinda stinks, but i have seen mostly accurate distances. What impressed me was your controlled test and actually ground test were the same. As you know, most sims off of turf you are going to hit further than on actual course…in my experience anways.

The biggest problem with radar based monitors is that they don't pick up spin rate well, especially indoors

They can but the setup is crucial. I think considering that anything under $20k indoors is going to struggle the R10 does amazingly well

Just watched this. Commenting late without reading all comments. How could garmin use wind without knowing exactly where you hit from, which direction you are facing, and how far it is to pin? Temperature and humidity I can understand as it would just be an algorithm that I imagine ball manus have been using for years. We all know that when your balls are cold, they do not want to go as far, lol.
@davidmaxfieldgolf2 жыл бұрын
When you connect the r10 with the Garmin golf app is uses your location settings and Garmin weather conditions to pinpoint where you are. Then the direction of the ball is set with which direction the unit is facing. It’s pretty simple really 😁
@catman10502 жыл бұрын
@@davidmaxfieldgolf Not so simple to me, lol. The R10 is a radar. It does not know where it is or where it is facing. Unless you have measured off back from the pin and somehow chosen the pin-pointed the exact location on the course where you are hitting from. I did not see this explained so am curious. I may try that next year if I know how to do it properly. tks in adv. ross
@davidmaxfieldgolf2 жыл бұрын
@@catman1050 Hey Mate, When you connect the Garmin R10 to the Garmin Golf App on your phone or ipad The Garmin Golf app on your phone uses your location settings and also syncs with Garmin weather. It's the same tech they use on the golf watches to give you the "plays like' Distances when using virtual caddy. it know the direction of the wind and promts you to hit an extra club or less club etc. So all of that tech syncs together when you select "local weather conditions" on the Garmin Golf app which should be a default setting.
@catman10502 жыл бұрын
@@davidmaxfieldgolf Got it. I only used on driving range and not on course. I did not realize that you were actually on a hole and not a practice hole. Will try it next year when we see the courses open again, lol.
