@Shaboodle01148 күн бұрын
I think you, like many others, are approaching this release from the bubble of DIY sim builders. There is an entire world of golfers that have been avoiding simulators due to the complexity of it all. The R50 simplifies the process, while presumably giving 3 camera accuracy for $2k less than the GC3. You can take it to the course and then come home and plug right in to your projector. Of course HTH is not GSpro. But for all of the golfers who don't currently have simulators (most of them), being able to play every course in the world including their local course with the improved graphics is going to be very attractive. P.S. You seem a little salty that they didn't give you a heads up :)
@friendly_golfer8 күн бұрын
😂 might be a little salty lol. Not really though, I have never had any interaction with Garmin or PlayBetter so I wouldn’t expect to hear anything about this. I agree with your bubble comment and try to remember that some people will have no interest in playing courses, tournaments, online, and all those other things you can do with software like GSPro and full simulator build. That’s why on one hand you could compare it to ST+ which can be run on pretty much any device someone already owns, also very simple. Seems like this will be higher quality hardware than ST+ which will justify it being almost twice as much, a GC3 certainly is. Ultimately it comes down to if it will be as accurate and reliable as a GC3. If it is then your assessment will be right. Maybe this video came off too negative. I really am just looking at it from the outside and trying to guess whether it will be a winner or not. As someone else said, the more competitors in this market the better for all of us.
@ppierpont8 күн бұрын
@@friendly_golfer I don't get this thing with PlayBetter. All the reviewers who had pre-release units talked about getting one from PB and that PB had already sold out and was taking pre-orders. All this time, Garmin HAD THEM IN STOCK direct. They had them at launch and still had them available on Friday. A business I own is an authorized Garmin dealer, and I checked the availability on the backend.

I agree playing local course. It being accurate as shown in videos that have come out comparing GC3 and even sky track plus the portability, just plugging in HdMI cable is nice. Not only to go the range but if you have left righty you need to move it from one side to the other which is now simple to do. The unit is big but similar weight to a GCQuad. Size is most likely to accommodate the screen. It’s a winner in my books that’s why I already ordered one 3 days ago.

Hey Bobby I’m rewatching this bc I’m obsessed with the R50. I wanted to point out that the R50 does/will shortly support the E6 iPad app. It would be no trouble at all to place an iPad on a stand above the LM. Also, another thing to note about the Garmin Golf subscription is that if you have a Garmin watch the same HTH sub gives you green contours on like 15K courses on your watch.

I know a few people have suggested there might be integrations with more Garmin products like that. That would be nice to see and an advantage that other launch monitor companies don't have.

That is great point about face angle. I also assumed that face angle must be calculated.
@hjlamb7 күн бұрын
I was thinking that it could be measuring the face angle based using just the one dot. Since it is larger, depending on the resolution of the high speed camera, it can calculate the angle based on the shape of the circle. I assume that's why they use larger stickers than Foresight.
@friendly_golfer7 күн бұрын
I wondered that too but I would think anything other than a single circle would work better to determine angle. Maybe a rectangle would work.
@dominiccarvelas36577 күн бұрын
It’s likely calculated the same way carry distance is using measured numbers. My guess would be the large sticker 4 times the size of GCQuad stickers. Is measured (perceived width) compared to known actual width over time showing if the club is open then closed or closed then open or straight via interpolation of the expected vs actual data over time. This is something that I think they will continue to improve over time as it does appear to be a calculation that needs updating as it is sometimes accurate and sometime not in a couple reviews already out on this.
@adamshettle53917 күн бұрын
I am presuming the fact that garmins dots are much bigger may be the answer to this. Instead of looking at the distance between dots to "measure" *cough* calculate *cough* the angle, Garmin may be comparing the apparent dot width to the dot height in order to "measure" the face angle.

I'll never complain when there's more competition in this space. More competition is always going to be a win for consumers. That being said, I think the R50 is meant to directly compete with the GC3 and perhaps the Original Eye Mini. The price point comes right in between both and for the price it honestly has more features. There is a lot of buzz being generated because Garmin is a well known company. The other thing I keep hearing is that it costs way too much especially compared to the R10... Clearly a lot of folks talking about it aren't really that familiar with the simulator space. I would not be surprised if Garmin launches another launch monitor priced in-between their R10 and R50 within a year, similarly to what Uneekor did with the Eye Mini Lite. Makes sense to release the expensive one first, then come out with a cheaper model afterwards. I have a hard time moving away from Uneekor because I love their swing optix integration. I am shocked no other company has even bothered integrating proprietary accessories like this.

@DurangoLegend8 күн бұрын
You could probably run GSPro on the new M4 Mac mini. The M4 max processor is comparable to an Nvidia RTX4080Super. A little slower with somethings, a little faster with others. However, I'm not sure if Parallels running Windows 11 Arm would give you the full power of the M4 GPU capabilities. The nice thing about it is that it runs dead quiet, no fans, takes very little power and very little heat build up, and is incredibly small. The new M4 mini is about the same size as an AppleTV. It would render 4K easily to any projector or monitor. It is also a reasonable price.

Not a deal breaker considering the price and if the single camera works as well as it seems.

I asked similar questions about gaming PCs and the R50 on other KZbin reviews from Breaking 80, Let's Play Thru, and others. The part of my questions that hasn't received any attention yet involves the tablet-ready version of E6 that can run on an iPad. Given that all the descriptions of the R50 include statements like "the screen is like an iPad" and "the unit has a built-in computer", then the right question to ask is whether the R50 will be capable of running that software in the future. I'm not interested in Home Tee Hero, but I could be tempted by E6 on the R50. That would be an amazing all-in-one package!
@DurangoLegend8 күн бұрын
I don't think anyone could answer that question as it involves a lot of speculation. No one even knows what hardware is under the hood. Most likely an Arm processor of some sort. The newest arm based processors like Apple's own designed M4max are extremely graphics capable and could run GSPro or E6 better than most all windows gaming laptops. But it most certainly isn't an Apple chip as Apple wouldn't license it to Garmin. Probably an android based Arm processor with fairly limited graphics capability but could be good enough to run an iPad like version of E6. But that would also require some sort of partnership with E6 to get the license to develop an android / arm version of E6. Same issue with GSPro. I don't really see it happening but then again you never know.

A business I own is an authorized Garmin dealer (not the golf industry), and my regional manager for Garmin visited me today. I shared a ton of feedback about the R50, both my comments and input from this community and fora. Even though it has no connection to my business, he’s the person who handles my territory for all categories. He took notes and told me that he would pass them along to the development team. I got the feeling that the unit and its hardware has more capability than it’s firmware and software currently take advantage of. If that’s the case, it may offer features in the future that it doesn’t have. Garmin has done that with several other products in other categories.

My own personal sim experience started with a Garmin R10 and Home Tee Hero. Wanting more, I connected a PC and was introduced to GSPro. There really is no comparison between the two. GS Pro is a comprehensive golf simulation versus something more akin to an arcade game. The R50 might be a good fit for someone less interested in a true simulation versus a Nintendo like experience. Otherwise, a $3000 Bushnell launch Pro and a $2000 PC might be a better way to spend $5000. MHO

@pmata8148 күн бұрын
Yea i immidiately thought the same thing about the face angle claim. How can they measure it with only one sticker?? 🤔. Sounds a lot like what the ST+ pulled when it first came out. Claiming “measured club data” only to reveal later that only swingspeed is measured and path and face angle are actually calculated. I wouldnt be surprised if this ends up being the case with face angle and the R50.

Yup. Time will tell I think but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case.
@DurangoLegend7 күн бұрын
I wonder if they get the face angel and path from the high speed impact camera. They probably need the one sticker to get the speed and track the club path accurately but can generate the face path and angle by measuring off of the moment of impact from the high speed impact camera. Just a guess but seems possible.

I watched someone on KZbin do an accuracy test against the Trackman 4 and numerous shots it contradicted the Trackmans ball flight path along with some other numbers. Yet at the end of the review they said that they were impressed with its accuracy. As an ST+ owner it seemed the Skytrack + hung in there better than this machine. In all fairness it is new and I am sure it will get updates but it appears they still need to work some things out before it competes with the GC 3 etc.. Just my opinion of course
@DurangoLegend8 күн бұрын
I saw that too except the guy was an idiot. He didn't use RCT balls with Trackman on a very limited indoor flight setup. In that case the Trackman was basically worthless for all spin numbers. If you noticed the Trackman spin numbers were all in italics. It does this when the numbers have to be calculated because it couldn't measure them . That is why there was a mismatch. In addition, he was reading and comparing the wrong things. Angle of Attack is the vertical angle that the club makes with the ground plane and isn't the horizontal spin direction that he was comparing it to. The whole analysis was wrong because the guy didn't know what he was doing. Hopefully somebody competent will do the same comparison again.

I'm sure they will work out any issues since it is new. I agree with this videos preliminary review. Another reviewer said he got a firmware update and after the update the other optical machines (BLP/GC3 etc..) wouldn't even register shots. At the end of the day Home Tee Hero seems great with 43,000 courses but it is not in the same league as E6 or GS Pro and especially E6 Apex which may be equal or slightly better than GS Pro. Just my opinion.
@DurangoLegend7 күн бұрын
@@PIMarine7252 Yes, but if your side spin and backspin numbers are off, so too will be the flightpath that is calculated from them. I realize he called some of them out but then you have to trust that he knows what he is doing because many times those shots were fairly straight with only a slight left or right break. He could have thought he was hitting right when actually he was hitting straight or slightly left. You just don't know. There might be issues with the just released R50 or if might be a case of the reviewer doing something wrong, impossible to tell when the guy doing the testing doesn't even know how to properly set up the Trackman for indoor flight use. The one thing that makes me feel comfortable with the R50 is that it is a 3 camera system. No reason it shouldn't perform identical to other 3 camera systems. Also Garmin has had a lot of experience with the R10 so I would expect that they will continue to tweak the firmware and software until their flagship LM performs to its full capability.

I could see someone who does lessons using this, you can write off the high cost, and as a new golfer or one taking lessons I would think it’s pretty cool. I am with you almost the whole way on this video. The 1st review said it did everything, I thought great, no PC and its portable enough, and you can play your local course or any of the 43,000 other courses. Doing the math is makes sense. Then did deeper and see you still need a PC, and all the other stuff, now it becomes an expensive launch monitor possibly. BLP looks better unless this has the accuracy they claim. Both the ball and club data with an impact shot/vision, and a large touchscreen. I can see it being with it. Why do you think it is a lousy sim? All the reviews of the new and improved HTH have been very positive and say that it plays very well. Extremely responsive, very accurate in terms of slope, trap layout, and green response. I play GSPro with my Mevo+ and I have been very disappointed with it. First, GSPro only has about 20 to 30 really nicely modeled courses the biggest percentage of them are turds and look like crap. There is no consistency between graphics quality and course detail as they are all designed by different modelers. Second, the Mevo+ is really unusable for putting. Especially short putts of less than 10 feet. Third, setup is a pain. Fourth, short chipping of say 15 - 25 feet is missed about 50% of the time. Actually they sold out very fast and now are pre-order only. I pre-ordered mine and it is going to be at least a week before they get in the next batch of units. I don't know how many units were initially made for the release but they sure sold out fast.

I saw a few people even received theirs already. Odd that many retailers aren’t selling it yet though.
