Pedal power meters are the quickest and easiest way to add a power meter to your mountain, gravel or road bike. And Garmin does it right with the Rally pedals.

Great review Clint. I also have the XC200 pedals and love the data they produce. On the down side, they are a bit expensive - outside of the reach of many recreational riders. A side note - I lost one of the battery caps, but Garmin customer service was off the charts - they sent me a replacement cap kit at no charge. Great to experience some good customer service from them.

I have these pedals and have been utilizing the extra data. I have heart rate data with my chest straps and and a Polar Vantage V2. The additional data is inspirational and my Polar has a Cycling Test that I have been trying and it’s pretty cool too. As you know, Garmin let’s you load additional “Dashboards” with open source APPs. Those dashboards really are amazing and provide you with great insight. I find this really nice on my long long gravel rides.

Thanks, Clint. I just purchased the xc100 and I was just about to return it. The power was too low, but then I found the reason for my issue. I didn't torque the pedal to the specification. I still don't have the torque wrench (crowfoot wrench) but I ordered. I tightened the pedal and it seems to be accurate enough.

I’m sure you know this, but just in case you don’t, make sure you calibrate the pedal with your Garmin.

Timely review. I've been on the fence picking up the XC100 pedals for awhile now with intentions to swap between my gravel and mountain bikes. I'm a data nerd and I like to geek out on the graphs, but I'm also questioning if it's just cool graphs or is actual practical information. I'm not the type to do power meter type training exercises so that is not really a use case. It might be interesting to use on longer rides or occasional races to monitor my output and restrain myself to keep from blowing up. Not sure that's worth $699 though. Right now I use Garmin HR monitor with an alert set to top end of zone 4 to do that. Looking forward to your follow up video. Maybe it will provide enough details to push my decision one way or another.

Do you absolutely need a Garmin Edge to use the live data from the Garmin Rally pedals or can you get the info directly on the watch or phone? Just wondering as if we do need both to actually be able to use the power meter correctly, then the cost adds up quickly!

Nice Review and great solution to the different bike/different crank issue for power meters. I have a 4iii on my road bike which helps with training but not sure about the real value of the data on the MTB. Don't get me wrong, the data geek in me would love to see it but I am not really sure I would know what to do with the information once I have it. At $1200, it is pricey satisfaction for my inner data geek. I'd be interested to know how you think you might use the data feedback to improve your performance.

Did you have to adjust your seat height, as these pedals appear “thicker” than the standard SPD’s?

I have run a powerpod for a few years because after watching your stage install, i did not want to change my force crank bb etc. The powerpod is OK but calibration is not as easy as most powermeter… Since then, i was fortunate enough to source a carbon praxis crankset with a 4iiii sensor and it went on my “budget” hill climb/commuter bike. Like stage, very easy to use. After a filed calibration session with the powerpod, i decided to bit the bullet. Looking forwards to use it in off road and racing conditions. Did you notice much difference between the garmin and stage readings? Thanks
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs Жыл бұрын
I didn’t notice much of a difference at all. They seem to be calibrated fairly equally.

wow , you have a big difference between the legs.. did you end up recalibrating the pedals before this ride?
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 жыл бұрын
Good point, I probably should’ve done that. I did not recalibrate before the race. Like I said in the video, I chalked it up to the fact that I go over obstacles with the same foot forward, but that may not be it. I’ll try recalibrating.

@@ClintGibbs which brings up the question. How often should one calibrate the pedals? Every ride? Changes in temperature? With every battery change?

I am about to take the leap on a pedal based power meter. I will probably go Garmin (use their watch), but need a head unit. Mine will go on my TT bike, but like the ability to swap to the XC bike if I want. Weird question, but can you split the set between two bikes or are they matched full time?
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 жыл бұрын
You can very easily swap Garmin‘s between two bikes. I run mine mainly off GPS, but you could have separate wheel sensors on each bike if you wanted to. Garmin will pick those up.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I understood the answer. Can I use this as a one sided power meter? So I could install the set on 2 different bikes (one pedal on each bike)
@JogBird
@JogBird 2 жыл бұрын
the manual says that you cant use the right pedal without first pairing the left side with the head unit...
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
@@JogBird ah interesting, I was wondering if the dual sided pair would expect to always see the other side, thanks! I might go for two single sided variants then because for me I don’t think the dual sided would be as necessary. Most people don’t vary all that much side to side

Any concerns with pedal strikes using these pedals?
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 жыл бұрын
Not really because I’m using them on my cross country bike. If I were using them on a trail or Enduro bike, there will be more of a concern. However, it is nice that you can replace the autobody should ever get damaged. But with all the pedal strikes I’ve had over the years I’ve never actually damaged a pedal.
