Thank you! Finally got to use my Striker 4, a couple weeks ago, it’s a great instrument. I thought of you and your videos the whole day. Spent most of the time scrolling through settings and adjusting it different ways, Gain, Frequencies, Surface noise, etc.(I still have a Lot to learn). Not really concerned with tracking and waypoints yet, but will want to use markers when I locate fish. I really enjoy the details of depth and speed. I’ll probably be using it tomorrow for the second time..I’ll be looking for those shad! Thanks again for teaching us about it. 👍👍. Have a great weekend! 🎣

Thanks for the video. I was wondering how large of a net did you use to catch those shads. I have tried to use a 6 foot throw net on in the past and was not able to get it to work right, I was thinking about trying a 4 foot throw net from my boat to to catch some of the bait fish I see on my fish finder or is that to small. Do you you think a 4 foot throw net would be ok?
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 3 жыл бұрын
So I use a 8ft for most of my baitfish catching in lakes...I occasionally will use a 12ft as well. The 4ft will most likely be on the small side....those baitfish are fast...lol But the biggest thing is to practice throwing...then practice some more, it is a form of art throwing the net....and trust me I am not perfect at it and make a mess of it sometimes too.

Just found your channel, thanks for taking the time to explain how the Striker4 works. Do you have a video, or can you tell us how large the fish are that you identify at 4:24? I'm trying to target larger fish in our local reservoir but keep catching only 6-10 inch perch and bass. Thanks.

Telling a fish size strictly from a return is somewhat hard. The fish icon can be set to identify large or small fish, but is not very accurate IMO. I would look not at the size of the overall return, but the size of the "Red" portion or hardest return portion as that is normally the air bladder. Bigger bladder bigger fish...or it can at least get you closer.

New subscriber. Love the channel. I’m just starting with electronics for fishing. I noticed that on a couple images from this video, structure and bait fish are both red. That throws me off. When the bait fish are close to structure, how can you tell the difference? Sorry for the ignorance. Thanks in advance.
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 4 жыл бұрын
Practice, patience, and experience will help sort them out better over time. You can tell the fish since they are normally harder returns (more red) and their shape (more arch like). When its all close together it can be tough for sure....but keep at it and you will get better at seeing everything. It took me a long time to finally use my fish finder to its fullest.

Your vid are great. Thanks for making them. The Striker tutorials in particular are so helpful!! Question for you.... I picked up the Striker 4, and I “upgraded” the transducer to the GT15M-TM. After watching one of your videos that described the difference in the transducers, I think I may have wasted money. Your info seemed to suggest the 15 is only for deep water. I will be fishing on the coast of NE Florida, as far out as 20 miles or so. The depths will be no more than ~150 feet plus or minus. Will the GT15 transducer be effective at these depths, or will it give too much clutter and the 15 is really only good for deeper water? Or, will it give me lots of detail at these depths and work well? Bottom line, since I will not be in water all that deep, will the 15 work well or should I sell it and go with the smaller transducer that came with the unit. Thanks in advance for your help!
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 3 жыл бұрын
So here is my opinion...the GT 15 will be fine for you ...it probably starts working best in 30+ ft of water with ok results from 15-30. The issue will not be clarity...the GT15 is light years ahead of the standard transducer in clarity. The issues are beam angles and coverage as the standard transducer does have a bit wider beam...but in the water depth you will be fishing it should not be an issue. I say keep it and give it a go...you will love the crisper and clearer images definitly.

The plus does bottom contour mapping. If that’s not important to you the basic will be fine. Just most with boats are on bigger bodies of water and that makes the plus very useful due to mapping

@@1Cast1Fish Walleye, Crappies, Pike and Bass. I'm moving to Northern Minnesota so I am unfamiliar with these lakes. I have fished every year of my life but only in small, weedy lakes and never with electronics. SUPER excited to learn. I have watched videos where it seems as though anglers are emphasizing only down imaging and they only focus their efforts on identifying structure. One video mentioned they have given up on traditional sonar altogether. I'm sure this unit will help me land more fish than otherwise, but I do wonder if down imaging is more important than traditional. Any thoughts?
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 3 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not years ago people caught plenty of fish with standard 2D sonar only in black and white...lol The down imaging is just another tool, it does help in some situations, but if you learn to understand your 2D sonar you will probably do just fine. Now I have fished Minnesota lakes when I lived in the Midwest, and most were deeper and very clear and we did target alot of structure. The down imaging would have been a great additional tool to have, but it is not a requirement. So with that long winded answer, honestly with the standard you will probably do just fine once you get familiar with the water and interpreting what you see on the screen...however the issue you may have is depending on the waters size you will not regret not having down imaging as much as you will regret not having the contour mapping...many time we targeted contour breaks and changes and the mapping feature on the Plus and CV would definitely help there.

I am really enjoying your video so thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question just to make sure I understand what your examples are showing. Is the boat moving in all the example screen images? I assume the large fish, schooling fish, and (obviously) the structure is stationary but the boat is moving. If the boat were stationary and the fish were stationary, the screen would be showing horizontal lines, right? Thanks again.
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 2 жыл бұрын
In general you got it, but keep in mind your example would need the water, boat, and all variables to be perfectly motionless...which is about impossible. However if you see a straight line in the water column, then yes it is likely a fish that has remained within the transducer beam. For the most part structure never makes really straight lines, because the other thing to think about is that we are seeing and thinking movement in 2D from looking at the sonar, when in fact we are really sealing with a 3D object and multiple planes....so any movement up, down, left, right, ect all will change the image some.

@@1Cast1Fish Thank you for the reply. I'm new to the Sonar/Fish Finder world in my small kayak and the complexity of interpreting the Garmin Striker 4 screen has surprised me. Your tutorials are very helpful. I'm hopeful that I can get a handle on the info from the Striker and it will actually help me catch fish. My primary motivation is to keep my 7-year-old grandson interested in going out on the lake with me and catch enough fish to make it fun. Maybe I should turn the screen analysis over to him since he seems to be a wizard with anything that has a screen on it.

I fish the Sacramento River, a lot of debri and garbage and stuff in it. I wish it was in better condition, but it is what is... anyways, I wanna know what a shopping cart looks like, or a mattress, or a huge sunken log, or a sunken boat, or that guys old bbq that he threw off the bridge...like I said, it sucks, but that what I gotta look for, in addition to deeper holes and fish :( My unit gets here tomoro, I’m about a week away from having my customized aluminum ready for the water. Wanna get me a nice big salmon this year, another month they’ll be here.

Honestly if you are looking for specific type items you need a much higher end sonar for positive ID. You will need a unit with a larger screen and side scan, along with down scan capability to really find things like this.

I just got a Garmin Striker 4. I noticed when I'm in chip 77 mode, I will get a lot of small marks on my screen. When I turn it to 200 chirp, they are gonna. The small marks look like tiny fish because of the curved shape. Are these baitfish? Also what is the point of ever running the unit not in chirp mode. Last question, is there a way to find the thermocline of a lake with this unit? Thanks! Great video
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 4 жыл бұрын
As for the first part the 77 and 200 offer different cone sizes...possibly the fish are within the larger 77 cone angle, but outside the smaller 77. I normally always use chirp mode...non chirp may be of benefit in water with lots of debris like after a fall turnover since it has less sonar pings and therefore picks up less of the debris to cloud your screen with junk. To find the thermocline you have to turn the sensitivity way up....it is called "Gain" on the Striker 4.
