So, what I conclude from this is that the information on your screen is really just a guide for what's in the area. I tend to use mine to find structure and drop offs as opposed to looking for actual fish. By the time you see it on your screen and cast to it, it's probably long gone...

I find significant information from a flasher unit (I still use a Vexilar FL-8 and old school Lowrance Green Box). They have their utility. Especially bottom composition (hardness) rocks, sand, clay, muck. Not a big fan of auto-tune stuff. If I move over muck, I don't want the gain artificially boosted to compensate for the signal being attenuated by the muck. Just ends up making more work for you while searching for the correct bottom and reading structure. With time, you become very good at reading signals and bottom composition. Determining weed types works better on a quality chart/screen recorder though. Paints a better picture.

Had a Lowrance that showed a very bumpy bottom because of the waves, switched to a Garmin and it smoothed out the bottom to show it's actual contours. They don't all distort the bottom due to the waves, the Garmin was able to correct it

@@tommckelvey3609 The Echomap, both the Lowrance and Garmin were about $700 each, this was about 4 yrs ago. I fish in Rocky Point, Mexico which is mostly a smooth sandy bottom but the Lowrance always showed a wavy bottom with 1-2 ft bumps, which we knew was not the case by dragging a weight while fishing.

All great info!! Thanks! I was out slow drifting working on my fish finder and trolling motor in Oceanside CA. I kept coming up on the same school of bait fish swimming North as I’d power up and move. About half mile north of my first map of bait fish I saw some big arches pass through. Next thing I saw was a huge pod of dolphin feeding. Not sure if the big arches were the dolphin or the bigger fish going after the school of bait fish then the dolphin smoking the predatory fish. Cool to see. Definitely take time a patience learning these systems. Thanks again.

If it's real time and the fish are directly under the transducer when they just come on the screen what if you change the diameter of the of the cone? If I made the cone larger wouldn't they come in the view as soon as they enter the cone before they reach the transducer?

water temp is important. I leave an area based on water temp only. too cold or too hot and most fish move to the deep . deep holds cold water in lower part and hot water in upper water . it also hold salt water in lower part as it is heavier and fresh water on top as it is lighter.

One mistake I see often finding the correct depth while trolling. When the fish off to the side, it will look deeper than it is since its further away. Sometimes it appears a fish came off the bottom then went back down (in a big arc). In fact it may be a long way out (looks deep) then passes under the boat (looks shallow), then the boat moves away from the fish (looks deep again). The fish may not have even moved but the distance changes. One would assume the fish went deep, and you set your trolling depth too deep.

@dtdionne
@dtdionne 4 жыл бұрын
As soon as you see structure or anything of interest you need to highlight it and make a waypoint. Regardless of the speed of your boat, the scan rate of your view, the mode and view your in, the gps in your tech knows where that is even when you don’t. MAKE A WAY POINT. Then switch to chart mode and navigate to it...AND FISH IT.
