Thankfully I use my ATMax mostly for ground hunting. In my experience it's never played well with salt water!

Tired out your setting at the beach today. It worked a treat in the salt water no chatter. If anyone is watching this video. I live in Australia and can confirm that these settings work a treat. Many thanks for posting the video. I was about to sell my detector until I seen this video.

Thanks for putting this vid up. I seen a lot of neg comments on other videos about AT max in salt water. But the main thing to learn I think is to get the correct settings on the device like you have then it will work. I was going to sell mine before I seen this video. Thanks from Australia for posting this.

I wish I would have found this video 7 years ago! I live 5 mins from the beach and have had terrible results from my AT max. I’ll try these settings tomorrow!

Garrett is a solid company and I was surprised at the previous video and this is more in line on what I was expecting....it will work ok. I will be watching on that equinox video as I am very curious and also maybe a land test with that one as well. I appreciate your videos and honesty on them and enjoy your knowledge on detecting and detectors. Thanks for sharing

As for Detector Comparisons he had the good sense to call Garrett and get some more conclusive settings and go back and test his detector again! It always says something to me about a guy who had what seemed like bad results not take those as the final results. He decided to test it again and came back with different results that worked. The AT Max is different from the Pro and the Gold. It is a truly different machine. I hope there will be a day when Garrett makes an even better machine along the lines of the ATX that is cheaper and a match to the CTX3030. Then we would be talking competition. Nothing better than competition! And good competition at that.

Awesome glad I was subscribed or I would have been calling Garrett myself. Got my Max last week , took it to the beach and felt like I had my AT Gold with me very disappointed but not giving up. So I hit a couple of parks that before and the Max was great for finding and separating targets and talk about deep. In a kids sandy play area I found a vintage cigarette case at about 14 inches deep on edge, I have hunted this spot 4-5 times with my Gold and never got a squeak. The max was just screaming in my ears. Sounds like good advice and as soon as the storms die down I am heading to the beach and see how this works. Thanks again GL&HH Send Garrett a bill for the service you have done them by doing this.

Excellent video!!! Glad you got it figured out. This will be a help to a lot of people (including me)! Thanks to Martyisnuts aboutdiggin for posting the link to this. I like the list on the directions on what you did to make it work. Sounds like Garrett needs to do a upgrade on their manual! Hopefully everyone with a Max sees your video. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

I’ve had the ATPRO for 4 years now and really like how it works. I’ve used for relic hunting as well as beach trips with no problems. I expected the MAX to work the same only with wireless headphones, lighted display and, and, and.....Don’t expect the MAX to work the same out of the box. I was disappointed with how chatty it was just at sites that I have never had problems with in the past. I have to admit that I’m not the most patient person when it comes to learning a new machine, especially when I’m convinced that it should work the same. If my regularly quiet sites are chatty, there is no way this thing is going to work at the beach. I viewed this video 2 days before I was heading South for work. Very excited to try these settings and make my first run with the MAX at the beach. I was able to get 5 hours in before heading back North. The machine ran great on both wet and dry sand with the settings described in the video. The beach is hunted regularly so I wasn’t sure. I didn’t find jewels on this trip but I did find a bunch of clad and most was 8 inches or deeper ( wish I brought my long handle scoop). The sound through the wireless headphone through me off at first. By the end of the trip I had become acclimated to it and didn’t even give it a second thought. Thanks again for taking the time to post your video. I’m very happy with how it performed and love the wireless headphones, lighted display, and, and, and.......

Well, now I am wondering if I made a wise choice about buying an AT Max, although this does give me some hope I will give these settings a try. I bought the AT Max with the intention of mostly hunting in the shallow salt water beachs. Thanks for posting this information!

These settings will make the ATM workable but its not very efficient in salt water. In fresh water and land it will do much better.

Were they willing to take them back and reprogram them to the settings necessary to do salt water without a menu rework every time i use it.? These puppies weren't cheap and that was the selling feature for me. It was a year since you made them aware of the salt water problem I would think it would have been fixed by now. I already have a good Garrett machine that does not work in water. Now it looks like I have 2 machines that aren't waterproof. I just got back from Rye Beach and with these settings, it sounds like a pinball machine.

Depends how much trash you're willing to deal with. I personally like hearing everything and checking the depth of the target. I don't like knocking out pull tabs because you could lose good targets that are deeper which read similar to pull tabs. The downside is you will dig more trash but I don't mind it. Zero mode hearing everything above iron is what I like. Good luck

Currently in Mexico with a new AT MAX and having lots of problems- after adjusting all of my settings as required I can’t seem to get the machine to manually ground balance. When I hit the shift key the reading is still in the nineties as opposed to around 14 - am I doing something wrong - can’t figure it out - any help would be appreciated

🔴 Garret should be sued for false advertisement AT ( all terrain) I spent almost one thousand dollars for nothing. I can’t return the product now cause it’s over 30 days. I bought specifically for salt water and it’s a nightmare machine. I wish that the garret company goes bankrupt

Glad to see the rush by the Garrett Haters was definitely just that, a bum rush. Please be so kind as to eat your crow and smile while you do it. While I am happier that there were successful results I am still going to wait and see when a test is run with the Minelab Equinox. Will it make me change my mind. It will depend on the way it handles the targets and whether it is fragile or not and the price point. If it fails at any one of those 3 I may choose the Garrett. I have used an AT Pro and found it far better than the haters have said, but not quite as able as I would have liked. Minelab make superior salt water machines, but they are very expensive in comparison to Garrett's fine machines. The real bottom line in my book is will the machine do what it claims in the conditions it is claimed to be able to work in and will I be able to duplicate that. Will it hold up over the years or will it break too easily. I think I will wait a little longer and see what happens when the Minelab comes out. There are of course other manufact ers out there who may present other models to consider as well. Anyway we all need to be sure we understand how to set up and operate our machines first and foremost before we say, "That machine is a piece of junk!"

At these settings, I detected for a little while and hit a nickel at about 7" and it was a nice clean hit. At three bars down in sensitivity, it was still penetrating well. I was in about 18" of salt water.

One of the reasons I want to get rid of my Max and get a Nox 800, because the Max grunts and sounds are so annoying now to me I just cringe every time I hear a Max. I just need to know if the Nox 800 is a better machine than the Max! Need a great truthful test of both machines side by side!
