Boost has to be tapered down on this turbo regardless what fuel is being run. When you hold 20+ psi to redline you cant put any timing in it, an indication the hot side is still too small (the diameter of the exducer is still 38mm, which is stock sized). Power nosedives and it feels terrible when trying to hold boost. Tapering boost off above 5000rpm allows a lot more timing to be added and carries much more power. This was the case with my car on 93 and e30 with this turbo.

I have a focus st 17, what typebof turbo recommended (big turbo) and intercooler choice? Which one is best for the vehicle ?
@UncleBruce973 жыл бұрын
My 2018 ST is FBO with stock turbo. I love it but I want a little more. I've avoided the 2867r because of the cost and because it is my daily driver and I just want long term reliable power that is more than stock but not sacrifice daily drivability. My question is, would you recommend this turbo over the 2860 in terms of reliability? I put a lot of miles on it so I'm afraid a "big turbo" will wear my engine faster, but this powermax seems like a good compromise.
@GTkyle3 жыл бұрын
I was one of the first people to install a Powermax on my car, I'm at about 4,000 miles so far. I'm putting trust in the Garrett name that it will last a long time, as my car is also my daily. That being said, this turbo does hit hard in the midrange and therefore actually may be harder on internals than the 2860. I wanted the stock-like spool which is why i went with the PM. But the 2860 gen 2 will be capable of much more power.
@UncleBruce973 жыл бұрын
@@GTkyle thank you! That answered a lot of my questions. I’m only at 65,000 miles so I think my engine can last a good while longer. I didn’t consider the torque being higher maybe hurting internals. Does it carry the power further into the rpm’s over stock as well? I hate how gutless stock turbo is after like 4K rpm’s.
@GTkyle3 жыл бұрын
@@UncleBruce97 the torque of an actual big turbo comes in more smoothly and therefore is easier on engine internals and driveline, so the 2860 should in theory be easier on the engine as long as you arent aggressive with boost and timing. The Powermax power curve is very Similar to stock. It might hang a couple hundred rpm higher but the hot side is still restrictive like the stock K03 so it behaves similarly, just makes way more power. I would shift around 5500rpm on the stock turbo, i shift around 6000rpm with the powermax, just off seat feel. Also, while im talking about this. This turbo will absolutely carry 20+psi to 6500, However, it creates so much heat that its hard to throw any timing at it. So what we ended up doing was tapering boost off above 5000rpm which allowed a lot more ignition timing to be added and actually picked up a lot of power in doing so. Alan tapered it to 16psi at 6500rpm on my 93 tune and 18psi on my e30 tune. Otherwise it peaks at 24, carries 21 to 22, throughout the midrange, then is tapered after 5000rpm. This is crucial.
@dham993 жыл бұрын
@@GTkyle what kind of power would a FBO, E30, sea level (southern Texas) ST make? I feel like those high altitude figures are far off the potential since the air density is a problem. I’ve seen FBO+ E30 JST tunes hit 300whp/430+ftlbs.. I’m pretty sure I’m in that range considering how much I’ve pulled on modded STi’s, 370z’s, M3’s, etc.. and I’m on the factory K03. If I feel I’m lacking on top end, I think with a simple turbo swap and tune, I’d be happy with 350-370whp without touching a single other component if it’s achievable.
@GTkyle3 жыл бұрын
@@dham99 depends on the weather, honestly. South texas is hot and humid. Ive heard of people hitting 300whp and high 300s torque with the stock turbo on e30, aggressive tune, low altitude, and good weather. Maybe in the winter time on a cool or cold day you make that kind of power, but not that torque. Yes a simple turbo swap and retunewill get you 350 whp and 380ish tq. If you never plan to run aux fuel, id run the gtx2860r gen 2, otherwise if you do plan to run it eventually, get the gtx2867 gen 2. Edge has a great video on the 2860, its a potent turbo for stock fuel system.

Pretty neat little turbo but for me if you're gonna upgrade and go through all that hassle get something that's gonna give you more power. Gtx2860r at the minimum. @TMTMS33 жыл бұрын
I agree if you are planning to make mid to upper 300's for power. But if you are just wanting a 300hp stock turbo setup, the power max is the way to go. Yes, you have to change out the turbo, but it isn't too much more difficult to do that over changing the downpipe. For the money, an intercooler and the Pmax is cheaper than all the other bolt-ons necessary to get to 300whp on stock turbo and you aren't pushing the turbo as hard so it is a more reliable 300whp also. Basically, its not really an upgraded turbo, its what the stock turbo should have been.

We've modified a lot of newer platforms around here and the ST is a great foundation of a platform to mod. It's easy to make power and the motor handles a good deal. It's a great car to mod.

@@EdgeAutosport have you ever tuned a setup that was running the cobb stage 3 power package with the 2867 turbo? thats the setup i want to go for but i havent seen anyone run it yet and im hesitate
@FoST893 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, when you installed the Garrett powermax intercooler were you able to keep the lower grill intercooler plastic shroud? I would like to retain that shroud to keep direct air flow to the core.
@dantrombley81483 жыл бұрын
I think he kept it off. But if it makes you feel better I removed mine and haven’t had any issues at all. Oil doesn’t get hotter than it did with the shroud on, coolant temps are great, my intercooler stays at ambient maybe 5 degrees over on few wot pulls. And it looks awesome without it on lol.
@jesuscarrillo43443 жыл бұрын
Due to the shape of most aftermarket intercoolers, you are unable to keep the shroud. There are two intercoolers you can use that will let you keep the shroud but they cost an arm and a leg. I'm using DnR 3.5" intercooler and like Dan said above, all temps stay down. No irregularities seen on Accessport. Other mods I have done are Turbosmart dual port bov, Injen cai, Cobb rear motor mount and air filter, Stop Tech drilled and slotted front and rear, resonator and simposer delete. Full 2.5" exhaust to stock mufler and this turbo will be my last power mods next year.

@EdgeAutosport3 жыл бұрын
The COBB Accessport should be one of your first mods, even the Stage 1 maps are an improvement over stock. Plus you can then read codes, engine data, and get custom tuned to get the best from a FMIC later

My stock turbo has a leak and I am thinking about replacing it with this one because it is affordable and my car does not have mods to support a bigger turbo. Does this turbo require a tune? I do not have an access port and I am unsure if I would be able to afford to make that purchase along with the Turbo.

I need opinions on this turbo cuz people are telling me in forums and a group I’m in on Facebook that this turbo sucks cuz it gets too hot, and it’ll mess the engine up. How is that so? I have a bad turbo in my ‘16 ST and want to replace it and I was thinking about this turbo to have at least 300 hp nothing more or less on 93 octane. I don’t want to do anything crazy I just want 300 hp for my car that’s it for as long as I have the car. Please help!!!!!!
@EdgeAutosport2 жыл бұрын
We love this turbo for an OEM+ build! Its got plenty of spool for daily driving, and when paired with full bolt-ons, you can expect to top out around 300hp/400tq. Turbochargers get extra hot when pushed near their efficiency limit, so if you want AT LEAST 300hp, you should consider a GTX2860 or 2867 perhaps. But make sure to watch the rest of the ST videos on our channel and subscribe to stay up-to-date! And as always, feel free to give our shop a call, we take pride in our customer service, and can help find the right turbo and mods for your build goals.
