Everytime I hear Gary Moore, the thought always comes to me that he very well could have been the finest and most refined guitarist ever. David Gilmour is of course one of them but I wonder if Gary wasn’t even better. To me his feel for the guitar, perfection in every note and full control over every sound has to be unmatched. His playing was perfect in every way.

This 1987 version of Empty Rooms has, what I believe to be, the BEST guitar SOLO of all time. Actually, every note of the 11+ minutes is phenomenal. I've been a pro-musician since 1973, and honestly I've never heard better -- Live or in the Studio. Amongst my other favorite guitar solos are: - Jimmy Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (CD) - Eric Clapton - Old Love (Live June 30, 1999) - Johnny Winter - It's my own fault (CD with Rick Derringer) - David Gilmour - On an Island (Live with Crosby & Nash on background vocals)

I've been in love with Gary Moore's music since the mid-1970s -- and this live version of 'Empty Rooms' isn't even the best of his tracks, _or the best version of this song._ You have ahead of you a very rich and very extensive Gary Moore back catalogue to get into. It will take you months just to cover Gary's music alone. Check out the following: 'Still Got the Blues', 'Parisienne Walkways', 'Jumping at Shadows' (widely regraded as his best blues track -- listen to the studio version, it's miles better than any live rendition), 'Black Rose' (with Thin Lizzy -- again the studio version), 'Midnight Blues', 'Blood of Emeralds' (studio version again -- this was his tribute to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy -- Phil died of a drug overdose in January 1986. Gary was probably his best friend but in an interview years later he said he had been far too upset to attend Phil's funeral, so he wrote this tribute because he regretted not attending Phil's funeral). But you might like to begin with this -- 'Don't Believe a Word', live at the BBC in 1979 (with Phil Lynott on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums -- three of these four have now sadly passed away): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHvQkJSYmcajrNE And then 'The Loner' (live in Boston, 1987): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpnIp2mhmtWGp5Y I could easily list twenty tracks for you to listen to, guys. :-) Easily the greatest UK rock guitarist.

@@taeoh2743 This probably is one of the best versions, in fact. Others that are packed with emotion? _Blood of Emeralds_ As I noted, in an interview, Gary said he had been too upset to attend Phil Lynott's funeral, but he regretted that decision. He wrote the above song (about Phil) to express his sorrow at losing his friend. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5Kvinajo7CAn9U He also wrote _Johnny Boy_ for the same reason: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmnKiIKBjKt7oc0

Frodsham Hill is also only a mile away; apart from the many sandstone quarries there, it's claim to fame is an Iron age hillfort. Cheshire - the county it's in - is a beautiful and historic county. The guitars were custom built Charvel Stratocasters; built by Wayne Charvel & Grover Jackson. There is actually a whole story about those guitars as told by Grover Jackson himself. Gary had a red one (in this video) and an exact duplicate in white, which was also used elsewhere in this same concert.

You're asking about his guitar and if it is the same as the one David Gilmour plays. David Gilmour plays a Fender Stratocaster - the legendary model created by Leo Fender and played by legends like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen and many more. Gary Moore also used a Stratocaster, but that particular guitar is a Charvel. It is based on the Stratocaster design, but has some more modern features like Floyd Rose tremolo, humbucking pickups etc. Such guitars are often called Super Strats and were very popular in the 80's, offered by various manufacturers like Charvel, Ibanez, Jackson, Kramer etc. Gary is also known for using a Gibson Les Paul, especially in his later career. He had his own signature model Les Paul, based on his vintage guitar, previously owned by Peter Green.

Finally you have come to my recommendations. Here are more of the good stuff (yes, Gary Moore is down there somewhere because he is great). (Guitar heavy) Instrumentals that no one should die without hearing. Rainbow: Weise Heim Porcupine Tree: Yellow Dream Hedgerow Dreamscape Funkadelic: Maggot Brain Jeff Beck: Two Rivers Jeff Beck: Where Were You Jeff Beck: Cause We've Ended as Lovers Steve Vai: For the Love of God Joe Satriani: Surfing with the Alien Andy Timmons: Electric Gypsy White Lion: Blue Monday Stevie Ray Vaughan: Little Wing (Hendrix cover) Solos you haven't covered yet and noone should die without hearing Pink Floyd: On the Turning Away (take remasted live version from Delicate Sound of Thunder - live version solos on this song is much, much bette than studio version) Guns N Roses: Civil War Guns N Roses: Coma Bruce Springsteen: Ghost of Old Tom Joad (only the live version with Tom Morello - its Morellos solo that is insane good - though Springsteen actually play rather desent solo as well - there are only one but its from 2009) Scorpions: Lady Starlight Roger Waters: What God Want's part I and III (Jeff Beck plays guitar on this album and is the only guitarist - who are not Gilmour - that can play like himself and make guitar that match Waters songs and lyrics) Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tears Gary Moore: Well basicly almost all songs play live in the 80's - listen to live album We Want Moore, its full of gold solos - but two songs from this album with insane good solos is Empty Rooms and Cold Hearted Gary Moore: Parisian Walkaway Gary Moore: Still Got the Blues Derek and the Dominoes (band with Eric Clapton and Duane Allman): Claptons best blues ever. Basicly every solo on their only studio album, Layla and other assorted love songs, and their live album Live at the Fillmore. My favorite Clapton solo is Have You Ever Loved a Woman on the live album. Led Zeppelin: Since I've Been Loving You Avenged Sevenfold: Seize the Day Black Sabbath: Feels Good to Me Pearl Jam: Black (fantastic solo on the live version Live at the Garden, so much, much, much better than studio version) Fleetwood Mac: Go Your Own Way (take any live version - best live version I know is 1997)

Oh, by the way guys, Gary's guitar in this video is not the same as David Gilmour's. David Gilmour's guitar that you mentioned (Pulse concert) was a Fender Stratocaster. Gary's guitar here is a Charvel San Dimas. Cheers once again.

As good as this is, I am totally gutted that this was your introduction to Gary Moore. Live versions of Still Got The Blues, Parisienne Walkways or The Messiah will Come Again would have been even better!!!
