Thank you so much for this song. It holds deep & powerful memories & associations for me. I was at university in Paris, France in 1985, and saw Gary perform this live (or maybe the gig was '84, my memory teases me) in the city of which it speaks. If that wasn't memory enough, it was a favourite song of my mother, who was French, & who helped me discover the city of her youth. She's long gone now, but every time I hear the genius of Gary live, emotions surging from his finger-tips & making his guitar weep, I'm immediately taken back to those happy days, as if by magic, & my mother waiting to see me after the gig. Thank you again.

I'm no fan of hour long solos - except when it's Gary Moore. Gary Moore knew how to keep you interested and wondering what he's going to do next - and it still fits into the song. Gary Moore is one of my two favorite guitar players. I've never ever heard him make a single mistake. None. He could do everything from Blues to heavy metal and back again without losing a step. What's even more, his guitar speaks to me. The way he makes it sing and wail touches me and it's oddly satisfying. I've listened to rock and metal (and Blues although I didn't know that by that time) long before I heard Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues for the first time and I never had the wish to play guitar myself. Along came Gary and all I wanted was to own a Gibson Les Paul and be able to play it. And he made me realise that Blues is worth exploring for me. Gary Moore changed my life and my view on music. For that I'll be eternally grateful. Oh, and you need to watch his guitar dialogue with BB King: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5bEcoGanpqYo5Y - this is basically BB King's signature song and the way they play it together is greatness.

What you’re hearing is called a pick scrape, where the strings are muted by the right hand while scraping across the strings in a percussive manner to introduce the next note. Just like a piano, a guitar can be played percussively as well as melodically. But as a non- player you shouldn’t worry about the techniques used. Just enjoy the result. Count Basie famously said “If it sounds right it is right!” It sure sounds right to me.

gary moore is amazing, what a guitarist he was, diverse style, making Spanish style, jazz style, rockabilly, and even was quite skilled of a metal guitarist. but he shined brightest when playing the blues, for me when i listen to Gary Moore i feel the emotion in every note more so then with any other guitarist or band, and you can usually see the emotion on his face too as he pours his soul into playing. this was a great reaction bro, you have to do Gary Moore - The Loner Live at the Hammersmith Odeon. its amazing! either that one or The Messiah Will Come Again live at Montreux Jazz Festival in 1990. both are out of this world.
@LodewijkVrije

and you are right, guitar playing in and of itself is not inherently difficult, if you sit down for 1 hour there are probably some easier riffs which you would be able to play fairly well, i myself can play a few dozen songs, but ive never had lessons. you are right in that the notes have to be in specific orders to work out, or it will sound off to everyone but the most tone deaf people. i believe the chord progression of the solo in this song goes like this A, B, C, D, E, F, G In the main progression the 'E chord' is not E minor, it is E Major and/or E7. This is a widely used substitution in minor keys. This leads to a use of the A harmonic scale: A, B, C, D, E, F, G# I think there is a small use of another scale ... B diminished? B, C, D#, E, F#, G, A. someone who actually knows will probably tell me XD but as far as guitar playing goes, the playing itself is not the hardest thing in the world, making your own music, figuring out what works, knowing how music is structured. and improvising stuff together, this, this is the hard part that is either going to take allot of natural talent, or allot of hard work and learning.

The 'band' is creating the musical 'foundation'. one way to think about it, and there are many, is that there are certain notes that sound good over a a chord. hes probably played those patterns a million times so he doesnt have to think about where to move his fingers. and he would be familiar with whats going to sound like what, just instinctively at that point. Actually, to the point where is he played a bad note, he could make it sound good. you can make a bad note sound good depending on the notes you place around it. context is everything. you can play a chord that sounds stupid, but then put the right chords before and after it, and all of the sudden what was once terrible now sounds gorgeous.

I think what you were saying about those in between notes that sounded odd are just when he lets all the strings ring between phrases or bendings (those high pitch ascending and sustained notes) to create a dirty/muddy effect. This can be seen in many styles of guitar but tbh it surprised to me also that he overused it quite a bit. As a guitarist I’ll also say that doing this technique feels quite good to do and also relieves you of some tension of having to mute strings all the time with the side of your picking hand, so that might be why he uses this a lot.

I would like to suggest to you to check out the greatest guitarist/singer/bassist/pianist/drummer combo ever, Richie Kotzen, he will shred a guitar, then sing a song that would not be out of place on Motown, or play a song Stevie Wonder would of grooved in the 70's or a track that Muddy Waters would be proud off, then hit you over the head with some metal along the lines of Soundgarden, or just rock the hell out in a trio power rock band. Richie is a solo artist, singer/guitarist for The Winery Dogs (power trio), Wilson Hawke (Motown type), Forty Deuce (metal), and his solo stuff, he arranges, and plays all of the insturments (like a boss) and goes from Philly soul, to the blues, to pop rock, to shred metal, to funk. One of the best in history.

Not to mention, one I forgot, he has a band with some of the greatest players in the world, including Stanley Jordan on bass, a fusion jazz band called Vetru. As a 17 year old he also played on one Poison record and played in the supergroup, Mr. Big for 2 records. Everything Good, You Cant Save Me, My Rock, Woman and a Man, Mother Heads Family Reunion, High (live version), are great starts.

Hey RRT, I was enjoying this so much. It's been a long time hearing this song.....what can I say? Two words come to mind about this and that is "pure epic." Credits to the rest of the band also! I didn't even know Gary had passed away until I looked it up. (RIP Gary Moore) My son started playing guitar at the age of 14 and he is now 41, and Moore was one of his favorites. When we have time my son and I get together and jam. We've been doing that for years. I love singing! Great reaction RRT, and a shout out to you Dave Madigan for the fine request! Hey, I love the intro gunshot. I'm a gun enthusiast, and I don't know if you did the outro, but it is dope! I saw somewhere in the comments where someone said, "sell your dog." Hey he's just doing what dogs do, so please don't sell him. lol I'm just messing with you because I know you wouldn't do that. Bear is boss!! Pet him on the head for me! See ya later....PEACE!! :-)

starburstppl no bears going nowhere. 😂 yea I made the outro thanks. I’ve never owned a gun I know too many people killed by them including my wife’s uncle who police shot in the back of the head when he was just 16 yrs old . If and when i purchase a home I’d get one. But until then I’m good. Gary Moore was dope. 😃 ✌️

Rap Rat Trapped, OMG that's terrible about the people you know who got killed by firearms, and especially your wife's uncle. Only 16 yrs old....I'm so sorry to hear about that. That is horrible. I don't own one right now, but I want to get one soon for protection. My husband is disabled, and bedridden, so I would like to get one mainly for the purpose of protection, because if someone would break in my house, I sure couldn't beat them up. Our car was stolen about a year ago right out from our driveway while we were sleeping. The next morning the cops found it. We were lucky we got it back, but it had over $3,000 worth of damage to it. They never found out who did it, but it scared me and that's when I got interested in purchasing one. Anyway, yes I liked Gary Moore's style alot. BTW, glad to hear Bear isn't going anywhere. lol Take care, and much peace to you and yours!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that in this song the main melodic motif is a total lift from Kenny Dorham OK. now "reaction suggestions": for some guitar-technique related reasons I was reminded of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aV6yXoqOmLGog5I - I can't imagine Rap Rat responding well to that one, and also this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXXNZqhjhK2ErZY
