Years ago I saw him at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver hit 2 buckets of practice balls with his 3 wood after he told his swing coach that he was unhappy with that club's performance on the course that day. I watched him hit every ball and they all went in the same area. I was unable to determine what changes he made to his swing; but he was apparently satisfied after 2 buckets.

I love Gary Player, but it's incredible how when it comes to ball striking (I do admit Trevino and Hogan are probably in the top 20 period) how Jack and Tiger (especially in his prime 2006--2009) are NEVER mentioned. Jack, incredibly, not only won 18 Majors, but finished second a mind boggling 20 times. Whose BALL STRIKING would you take? Seriosly? Hogan, Trevino or Jack..or Tiger when he dominated for more than 10 years? It's like a fascination with a certain love for Hogan or Trevino because of their stories (Trevino a man basically that came nothing--the best rags to riches story in the PGA - And Hogan's comeback from that car accident) that can't deal with Jack or Tiger.
@jamesanthony56815 жыл бұрын
I think no golfer will ever supplant Hogan in Gary's mind as the greatest ball striker because Ben was the player that Gary held in the highest regard because of his work ethic, accomplishments, and his comeback after the car accident. I believe it was Johnny Miller who said Tiger was the best ball striker - better than Hogan or Nicklaus.
@wreckim5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesanthony5681 For those 12 years that Tiger dominated...wow. However, what would Jack have to do to get your vote as the greatest ball striker--CONSIDERING WHAT'S AT STAKE? Which was almost always Majors with major-type pressure. Pressure he pretty much swatted away like a bothersome fly.
@jamesanthony56815 жыл бұрын
@@wreckim If I had to put money on either Jack or Tiger if both tied going into the final round of a major, it'd be Jack simply because he was in that position so many times. Nicklaus always seemed to make those early great runs in the final round of a major ( 4 or 5 under after 9, it seemed) . Jack's record in the majors was yes, phenomenal. In his prime, Jack admitted he was not the best wedge player, chipper off the green, bunker player. I believe if Tiger were born 30 years earlier and had joined the tour in 1962, he would have forced Nicklaus to become a better player in those areas. No question. Nicklaus would have responded and worked harder at those parts of his game, not that he didn't work hard. Jack said he wasn't great in those areas because he said he didn't have to be: he was the greatest long iron player, the longest, straightest driver, and the best clutch putter. And the best at managing his game and handling pressure. He was the only player in his era who said he played terrible after shooting a 68.
@wreckim5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesanthony5681 Agree. BTW, all the top pros are so incredibly good at everything nowadays. A few weeks ago Rory went in the water twice, and took him two shots to get out of a certain bunker during the round highlights TGC was showing. He still shot a 68. They make so many birdies...like 5 to 7 etc...that if things go right they shoot in the low - mid 60s often. 2c. An aside note, even at 60 yrs.+ Tom Watson wasn't a bad ball striker either. So many to choose from.
@jamesanthony56815 жыл бұрын
@@wreckim Yes, all the top guys are pretty good at everything. Jordan Spieth is an average driver (relative to the competition), not the longest or most accurate, but compensates with his short game.

Gary Player is so mindless at times. The game progresses, stop living in your era. The current swings are better because they have taken all the best aspects of great historic swings. With all the research and tech we have today, to say that someone did it better 60 years ago is just crazy. Give the respect current players deserve.

All I know is his advice about rotation of the solar plexus is the best advice I've ever had or seen.
@interestedbystander1965 жыл бұрын
Beg to differ, friend. The current swings are NOT better. They are so varied, that you cannot say "the current swing" at all. In fact, they are probably a bit worse than in years past, given how technology has improved things like forgiveness on off-centred hits. However, the fundamentals are the same, no matter which era. If you do the right things right, you'll be a good golfer. And Gary Player is still playing and, up until very recently, was still winning. So enough talk about "his era", please.
@tatchy10013 жыл бұрын
@@interestedbystander196 so you’re claiming all the launch monitors, body tracking software and biomechanics have players swinging worse than guys who did it by just beating ball with trial and error and didn’t actually understand the basic physics behind path v club face when shaping shots? Ok then 😂
@interestedbystander1963 жыл бұрын
@@tatchy1001 Clearly you can't read. At no point did I say the current swing is worse. What I said was that there is no such thing as "the current swing". Show me two tour pros who have the same swing. Go on, I'll wait. Just because the swing mechanics are understood better these days, given advances in technology, that doesn't mean players are swinging better. On the contrary, the players who are consistently hailed as having the best swings of all time are Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. Remind me again which era they played in?
