Ladies and gentlemen this IS country music. Gary was by far the best at making you cry and his music was from the heart. Gone but definitely not forgotten.

Great voice, great talent, great writer and sadly, a great tragedy. This is true American country music by an artist who gave us far more than we gave him back. When I first heard this almost forty years ago, I said, "Good Lord! Who is that." He stopped me in my tracks. Yet my brother had to drive all over Chicago to find the album to give to me for Christmas. Rest in peace Gary, rest in peace.

Being from FL I grew up listening to Gary Stewart. Now that I'm older and away from home it takes me back to my younger days hanging in Okeechobee. Bonus just found "Essential Gary Stewart" on CD for my Jeep.

Long after Garth Brooks has left everyone's memory (which will come sooner than later), people will talk about this musical genius. He didn't swing on a rope, he just did a ton of dope. That's how you make music that survives the ages.

@aeroshine I love all of Gary Stewart's songs, & could not understand why he wasn't as big as Billy Joe Royal or bigger!! Direct TV changed their stations. I always stayed up for hours recording them on the DVR. Now the new ones will not let you record anything on any of the music channels. I still have a few on a DVD somewhere that I pop in & listen to.

He was one of the original"outlaws" I believe. I loved his style and still do. Why do people come on here to make nasty comments. If you don't like it, just go away and keep your comments to yourself. It is so immature of people to do that. I guess they don't have a life and they are miserble with theirself. I once had a husband like that, notice I said once. Sent him on down the road, ley all the other miserables out there follow him. PLEASE!!!

I agree about the pre 1980's country music comment. It seems the music started to die after that, esp when Alabama started adding rock drum beats, and the likes of Ronnie Millsap with his spectacularly crappy pop sounding "There's A Stranger In My House" etc. I was born in '66 so I just caught when country was really country. And don't get me started on today's country, which it hardly is with its ICarly sound (gag), its so bad....
