There is a local fish & chip shop in my area. It is very average with everything frozen and it has that real frozen and foul oil taste. People get caught up with the "Beatles" music playing and the UK theme (I am in Australia) and they think it is wonderful authentic fish and chips and the reviews are outstanding. There is absolutely nothing British about the place and it is just frozen rubbish thrown in to a fryer. However, it gets great reviews and people make day trips to visit it.

Black pudding and haggis can lift a breakfast stratospherically. I’m not a fan of maple bacon - I’d rather add a touch of HP to smoked bacon than have my bacon maple flavoured. But, if I have to eat streaky bacon (not much alternative here in the USA) I liked it cooked exactly as you like it - I do get frustrated here as it is usually burnt and people pick it up with fingers in order to eat it. Scotland has such good quality meat products it was disappointing to see poor sausages - whatever shape! It never dawned on me that the beans being in a ramekin is such a good idea - great advice. Great review as always.

To pair catering sausages with quality black pudding and haggis is a false economy. As you said, the sausage makes the breakfast. It all looked a bit overcooked, to me. I really query people who don't like mushrooms. The only plausible explanation is that the ones they've had are not cooked properly, which is a shame. The red flag for me is when I hear "I like the taste but not the texture" That's a cooking thing. The rookie mistake with mushrooms is not knowing they have a huge amount of water in them and washing them in water just makes it worse because they're also very hydroscopic. Not knowing this can mean they come out slimy, which even I don't like.

At that price there’s no excuse for poor quality sausages. It’s penny pinching to use low quality products. There’s still profit to make using better quality items and more chance of a repeat customer. Thanks for giving us the usually high quality honest review. All the best Pete 👍

I’d definitely serve the beans separately in a dish, maybe along with the roasted tomato, those things are gonna be messy and ruin the rest of the flavors in the skillet. They could work on the presentation and definitely raise the quality of the sausage and hash brown. Maybe even do something with the toast too, add some jam or something.
@GaryEats2 сағат бұрын
The presentation was very disappointing, and yes, the beans should’ve been served separate

If you are going to specialise in breakfasts you need to hit the mark and sausages are massive part of that,a breakfast should never suffer from lack of taste

Should not serve a lazy poorly cooked and rubbish quality catering sausage full stop, and that hash brown too (that looked the same as maccy d's to me!). Maybe they had the work experience guy in for the day but even so, go get some local potatoes and show him how to make some 'honest' hash browns (and not just chuck everything in a cold skillet at the end!)!

As a Scottish Canadian, I was thrilled that you found this place in Edinburgh. I have to wonder what the "Canadian breakfast" would have been like. I will likely be called on this, but no one I know in Canada eats Poutine. We were in London this past April and used some of your recommendations for places to eat, and they were amazing. Thank you so much for this channel. I really enjoy it. Cheers from Alberta, Canada!

Hello Gary: Based on your reactions to this meal and the individual contents, I think it would be safe to say that you probably would NOT like most of the breakfast sausage served here in the USA. What we have here is mainly mass-produced without the herbs and seasonings you are accustomed to. There is an English purveyor of the types of goods you are accustomed to located in the Chicago, Illinois area called JOLLY POSH FOODS and I and a British co-worker ordered from him. We ordered back bacon, mix for Yorkshire pudding, cippolata sausages, regular pork sausages and I think, if you lived in the USA, his products would be to your liking. Cheers, Paul Connors New Jersey, USA

As a Canadian, my dad taught me two lessons that were my favorites: "don't start a fight but finish them" and "don't order fish in a steakhouse or vice versa". Now, I actually find your review MORE interesting that you tried a perhaps "secondary" item outside the specialty of this Canadian restaurant and I hope to see more! But, as a rule for when one goes out for a great meal themselves, stick with the specialties of the particular restaurant is a good rule of thumb.

Hi Gary, that's a Scottish breakfast I would have been tempted to complain about, but you can't complain about the breakfast looking like a crash site. The sausages looked and sounded horrible and the lorne sausage wasn't far behind. But what I really can't stand on a breakfast, is an overcooked egg. Thank you for taking one for the team and have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Email incoming tomorrow.

Iv never seen anyone get so excited not having mushrooms 🍄 on a plate Gary 🤣. Yeah, a bit disappointing alright. From 2 nill down to 4/2 up? I think you still lost. Serving it in a pan is simply silly if it’s not hot. Tatie scone? We call that potato bread in Ireland and you can buy it in Aldi. That looked exactly like it. Yeah 5/10. A bit disappointing 👍

Hi Gary. Thanks for the review. Ordering Full Scottish breakfast at what says is a Canadian Diner is strange. I'm a Canadian born in Montreal now living past Toronto and other than having Poutine on the menu and Maple Leafs everywhere I'm not sure how this is a Canadian Diner. More of an international diner with Argentinian Skillet and Steak Salad, Mexi Skillet, New York Rueben, Tijuana and Kansas Dogs, etc. on the menu. Montreal Rueben would have been more accurate and there's really no such sandwich in Montreal as the Cheese Sandwich (Philly style). Where are the classic Canadian dishes like Montreal Smoked Meat or Peameal Bacon sandwiches. How about Tourtiere pie, Atlantic Cod or Nova Scotia lobster roll? Hopefully the next Canadian Diner you try out has more actual Canadian dishes on it.
@dpelpal23 сағат бұрын
Well, the owners probably _were_ Scottish. But my gripe with this place is that there's just wayyyy too much on the menu in the first place. Do fewer things, and do them really well. It's what all truly great restaurants do!

It freaked me out that they expect you to cut things on a cast iron skillet. I know it’s not non stick but I hate the idea of using a knife on a skillet! That aside, I’m glad that there were good bits in the breakfast - my boyfriend got absolutely obsessed with having Lorne and haggis for brekkie when we were on loch linnhe this summer. We were so happy there. I hope you continue to enjoy your Scottish culinary adventures!! I’m loving watching them.

Hi Garry , as a semi-pro photographer { before my disability } this area of South Queensferry was our go to place on a weekend { we would drive down from Arbroath for sunrise at the bridges } , and when Down The Hatch opened it was the perfect place for us to go , the food was fabulous and a real pick me up having spent a few hours out in the cold , but as time went on their standards dropped , which is a shame as we loved it , good review again

Hi Gary, been particularly enjoying your Scottish tour. Nice to see places I've been to. I was at this restaurant a few year ago. Mobbed and had to queue for a while but did have the Scottish breakfast. I think it was a similar experience but was famished and the hunger took over! Agree with what you said today though. That brekkie did not look that good for the money - not the worst but I'd expect better for the price. I'd be annoyed about the same things - catering sausages, beans all over, cheap bread, £3 tea bag. Queensferry is a tourist trap and quite pricey in general. Also, Craigies Farm is along the road and a good alternative for a Scottish breakfast.
