Finally a break from the triple digit temperatures is starting Wednesday, 85F, then down to the lower 80s. I'll be doing a lot of planting Tuesday, Brunswick Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, carrots, beets, radish, Pak Choi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, tatsoi, Komatsuna, Swiss Chard, and anything else I can think of. I have to wait until October to plant garlic and sow parsnip seeds. If I don't like them, I can always feed them to the chickens. The temperature drop is a week earlier than last year. As fro the triple digit temperatures, we had more of them last year. It is normal Alabama weather.

FYI you don’t need to put seeds in the refrigerator. I would lose my mind if that was the case 😂. I keep all of my seeds in ziplock bags inside of a plastic container with a lid. My oldest seeds are probably 8-9yrs old and they still germinate just fine. A lot of Seeds tend to last much longer than a lot of gardeners lead on.

I'm having a hard time getting lettuce to germinate right now. I was able to get spinach and carrots to germinate weeks ago and grew lettuce all summer. I really think peat mixed with compost makes a big difference getting things like that to germinate especially in warm soil. That seems to be the only thing that's different with my lettuce right now.

You can still plant collard greens! I plant Georgia collard greens and they get over 3 ft high. I'm in Central Oregon. My Georgia collard greens grew through the entire winter in my greenhouse last year which fed my chickens and my family well. In fact my Georgia collards were still growing in the spring and I planted seeds in between them and as they grew I tore out the big ones! You can plant lettuce now if you put a board up and they get some shade. You don't like collard greens then you should try steaming them and then mixing in bacon pieces. That's the only way my kids will eat them and they loved it with mac and cheese. 🙏💪🌱🥰

I just started gardening, here in southeastern TN. I lived in Southern CA for 36 years and didn't ever think about gardening, but man I would love to have the weather I grew up with out here! Perfect weather 364 days a year. I can't believe I never took advantage, I have already had a very successful gardening experience but it's been entirely revolving around the weather. I took it for granted and try to encourage everyone I know back home to start a garden! I wish I could have my cake and eat it too!

You’re always so informative! If I direct sow and the seeds germinate right before a heat wave, could I possibly need to resow? Just wondering if my collard seedlings are stunted after a week of daytime temps well into the 90s. Thanks!

Hi Gary, thank you for your videos. I am learning a lot. I have a couple of questions. What wood planks are you using as a border on your bet? Also, I have some horse manure who are fed only alfalfa. Would it be all right to mix that in with my soil and then plant? I have never planted before so this would be the first year my yard for a vegetable bed.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

I use pressure treated lumber. You can use manure that has alfalfa in it. Manures should sit 1 year to decompose before using. The thing you need to learn and wrap your head around is there is no need to dig the compost in. Using it as a mulch layer works better and reduces your weeds. The reason your plants bolt with the heat later in the season is excess fertilizer
