I'm doing a lot of harvesting, peppers, Komatsuna, Pak Choi, Swiss Chard, Tatsoi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, and turnips. Soon, I'll have a second harvest of Pak Choy ready to pick. In a week or so, the broccoli will be ready to pick, and a week after that, the cauliflower. The red cabbage and Napa cabbage are developing heads. I'm also waiting on carrots and parsnips. The empty space in the raised beds are covered with chopped leaves. Harvest time, means soon it will be time to break out my seed starting equipment. I start seed starts in the beginning of January, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard, chard, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, Pak Choi, basil, dill, flowers, etc. I generally have my first plants in the ground on Feb 20th, regardless of whether there is snow. Also, in February, I do a lot of direct seed sowing. This winter will be my largest garden to date with fifteen raised beds planted, sixteen in April.

Thanks Gary. I don’t have much space so will be just using four ft. Shelf. Your system looks good because I am doing this in my small home and worry about a mess like I had last year.

Everything I know about starting seeds indoors you taught me. I’m in my 5th season and have gotten a little better every year. I’m very very grateful.

Hi Gary, just watched latest video. I am going through tomato withdrawals. Just finished last of late season picks. I have started (last 3 growing seasons) to grow my own seedlings with much success. I did make the investment with my grow lights but in the long run it was worth it to me. Question is, I am trying to grow some small patio type in my basement. We live in western New York and winter’s are cold. Any advice? Basement seems to stay in the 65 degree range. Thanks in advance and for all of the tips and suggestions, Peter

Wonderful advice Gary. I have started long day onions (Ailsa Craig) in December under growing conditions which you have described. Unfortunately they all seem to die in February/ March despite careful attention. I live in Vermont so outdoor planting can't start until May. I have had some success with one year starts from Dixondale farms but the onions are small. Any suggestions? Lind Regards, Craig.
