Quality video 👏👏👏 can’t believe some of the negative responses on here. From what I seen (I ain’t no electrician) that was perfect safety testing. Thankyou for jogging our memories and sharing 👍

Im more commercial than domestic and i have my head in panels everyday so I have C&G 1 and 2 in electrical. Don't you Domestic guy's have to comply to TB118? Informative video by the way for folks that don't know. 👍

Alan- in the live test, the instructor talks of the neutral to earth test with 15 v induction but summarises it as a neutral to live . That it I'm still half asleep .

Unfortunately, testing 3 phase circuits to ground doesn't end well, but it's fun. I'd love to see more commercial stuff in your remit, even if it's paid for. They're good videos. Maybe explain why Evomaxs' are prone to loud noises after 2 years 😬🤷🏻♂️

for any safe isolation you should be using an approved gs38 voltage indicator and proving unit or known source as well as locking off the supply be that using a fused spur lock off or locking off the circuit at the mcb, you can't just rely on removing the fuse as anyone can come along and throw a fuse in, also multimeters can't be used for isolation because of the chance of selecting the wrong measurement
@seandempsey73512 жыл бұрын
As for not using a multimeter for safe isolation because it is easy to set the wrong range. I have to disagree, why ? Because if you’re silly enough to set the wrong range on your multimeter then your silly enough to set the wrong function on your MFT , I have seen an electrician about to do a Ze test but he set his megger 1751 on continuity and wonder why there was a loud bang followed by a big puff of smoke and sparks from from his megger and now it is in need of a very expensive repair , at the end of the day it’s easily done , but I but he won’t make that mistake a second time.

Daft question but how do you know if you have reverse polarity? Is the reading different to what was in the video?
@paulkelly32544 жыл бұрын
I’ve got a full sheet telling you results and if you’ve got a different reading Stuart, phone was playing up so I didn’t get to that part👍🏻 I can send it you
@cumberland12344 жыл бұрын
If someone has swopped L&N somewhere on the supply you’ll get a reading of about zero volts between L&E, 240v between N&E.

Well done lad. Ya are completely right. Those probes don't comply with IEC 61557.

Allen can you explain why we need a two pole voltage detector AND a multimeter?
@jamesdyas5424 жыл бұрын
2 pole testers used for safe isolation should be GS38 compliant which a multimeter isn’t. A multimeter performs more functions than a 2 pole tester. That was what I was told last time I went on a course anyway. Hope this helps.
@cumberland12344 жыл бұрын
Put simply, a gs38 approved voltage indicator is the recommended tool for testing for dead. A multimeter isn’t recommended as it may be set incorrectly whereas an approved voltage indicator shouldn’t require any setting. Approved voltage indicators should be proven before and after each use, either on a known voltage similar to what you’re checking or on a proving unit. A multimeter is useful as a measuring device, i.e. for an accurate measurement of volts/amps/ohms etc.

Where in TB 118 is the as operative instructed to perform a 'safety toch test' or an earth loop impedance test or a polarity test - the ONLY 'procedure' derined in TB 118 is the Safe Isolation procedure ! This video does nothing more than add to the confusion within the industry because TB 118 is ill-conceived, misguided, misworded, inaccurate and contains an unforgivably dangerous bunch of words - it should be no more than 2 pages long and explain what is in the title of the TB - a SAFE ISOLATION PROCEDURE ! The objective is simple - prove the test gear good, isolate the appliance, prove the appliance is dead and then perform a confidence test of the equipment to prove it is still good. Th edocument has opened the flood gates for test gear manufacturers to sell kit for checks that are NOT required to keep the gas operative safe ....
