When you replace your old boiler will you consider the Heat Pump Water Heaters like Dimplex Edel or Mixergy iHP (very new on the market) which give better COP for the electric??

Hi Janet - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Yes, heat pumps are definitely something I need to look at soon - the solar and battery storage has taken up most of my time and funds of late. Thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion on this video 🙂

Limescale built up in the cylinder is significantly increased when using the immersion heater rather than the gas boiler. The cylinder is like a huge kettle

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. I agree, however we live in a relatively soft water area so shouldn't be so much of a problem for us but definitely something to consider. Won’t electricity prices also rise, as it’s still mainly produced by gas?

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Yes, generally the two track together. However, given we charge our car we're on an EV tariff Octopus Go which gives us off peak rates of 9p per kWh which don't tend to change that often certainly not daily anyway. Electric water heater efficiency does not go down with age, unless the insulation is damaged. Likewise you can't use the energy content in gas 1:1 with electricity. A gas heater is not capable of transferring all its energy to the water, as an electric heater can. There is a loss through the flue.

Your conclusion that it is cheaper using Electricity to heat hot water is primarily due to how inefficient your boiler is. Mine is a 94% efficiency and thus it makes sense to keep using Gas. My break even point is 59% gas efficiency. I think you should make it clear that the outcome is purely for your situation and for many staying on Gas is a better option.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Yes absolutely, I worked through my own numbers to show how to do it as an example. Sorry if it wasn't clear but hopefully it should allow others to work out their own numbers.
