Great Video. I have four VW ALH 1.9 TDI's. Just did it on one of them and the seals were definitely dried out, hard, and leaking. Definitely had to run out for a 32mm socket as i didnt have one. Keep videos like this coming. Much appreciated.

Just a thought I'm about to do this job myself ...you can probably find a funnel that will pass a 3/8 extension through the middle to catch that oil easier

I got an oil hand pump they use to pull oil samples for the labs. When the filter been removed, i used it to suck out all old oil. This will halp to minimize the oily business replacing the seals. Believe mine is leaking as well

It’s a neat concept and works well. But the gasket is not one wants to fail. On the older cars replacing the gasket can be more difficult, but I found out a really easy way. KZbin video is inbound eventually on the topic!

Great video. I have a 2003 jetta tdi. With over pressure in coolant system. It keeps pushing coolant out of the reservoir. I also noticed that there is a bit of oil in reservoir. But not coolant in oil. I was told that it may be a blown head gasket but like I said coolant is not getting into the oil. Any suggestions?. Thanks .
@OlisGarage
@OlisGarage 7 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that sounds like it needs a head gasket. The oil pressure is almost always higher than coolant pressure when the car runs (15-50 or so psi for oil pressure and ~12psi max for coolant pressure). I slightly guessed on those numbers, but you get the idea. Replace the head gasket much sooner than later. If coolant goes into your oil, you’re (probably) screwed. While you’re in there, replace the lifters as well and do a timing belt. I’m filming a timing belt replacement video soon on my Jetta.

I have a VW golf mk5 1.9tdi, UK obviously, my coolant is starting to darken fast, i only changed it 2k miles ago and it's back to a murky rusty brown colour already I'm already thinking about buying a oil cooler and just getting on with the job.

@@derkaderkastan420Not good mate, i know that the oil filter housing on my car is made from ABS plastic, so warps out of shape over time, especially given that the water pumps as a standard that come with a timing belt kit, are pretty crap tbh, that then will raise the temperature of both the coolant and oil as a knock-on effect. Mines not as further down the line as yours i don't think, you're gonna need to change the oil cooler and filter housing, if it's the plastic type, flush the coolant system under pressure, probably best to disconnect the heater core and do that separately using a good flushing liquid, be careful with th coolant send and return pipes on the heater core, they're all plastic and have a habit of snapping when trying to disconnect the spring clips. Might be worth trying to flush the system first and see how far it's all cleared. I'm not using my car much these days so I'll leave mine till the summertime and go through the process, I'm sure i need to change the oil pump hexagonal balance shaft as well. Sounds all a lot but tbf to our car's here, otherwise they're pretty much bullet proof. Id take this hassle over most other car's catastrophic failures that would've already happened by now.

It is not. I would start with the valve cover. That seems to be the usual place the ALH leaks from. Though I don’t know if the PD have that problem because they have a super different valve cover design.

@@OlisGarage thanks hopefully it's nothing serious just something small the pipes under vacuum are leaking too but I don't if that would make it lose oil

My son pointed out that our only vehicle, our jetta smells like Antifreeze, the oil cooler is leaking, so I guess I need some gaskets tempted to change the whole thing mine is only leaking from the top. I have a 2.0 and it looks totally different.

How can you tell it`s the oil cooler gasket and not the gasket/o ring in the oil filter housing? If I can see some oil leakage on the square metal park, should I remove all three gaskets? Or should I start with the two oil cooler ones? Are those more common to blow than the oil filter housing gasket? Thanks, great video otherwise!
@OlisGarage
@OlisGarage Жыл бұрын
Just look and see where it’s not wet anymore. Only the oil cooler wet, probably only oil cooler gaskets. Whole filter housing wet, probably from the black cap. Gasket on black cap should be replaced at every oil change anyways. Have you ever replaced the gaskets on the cooler? If not, they probably need it for preventative maintenance. Sometimes hard to explain via words. I hope that helps

@@OlisGarage Thank you. I have never replaced any gaskets there. I guess I could try with the oil cooler gaskets first. I`m just a little confused as to which one to get for the top of the oil cooler as I cannot find any part numbers. The bottom one with the two holes on the sides is easy enough. Thanks! My car is a 2003 Jetta 2.0L GLS

Yes. I think that orientation is a little different, but it’s the same. This even works with cars where the oil filter screws to the bottom of the oil cooler.

Make sure the oil cooler sealing surface is super smooth and clean. The reason I filmed this video is because I replaced the gaskets once as preventative maintenance. They didn’t leak. Then I replace them, and they leak. So I drove it for a few years and then finally changed them again. Now they’re dry again. Sometimes that’s jus how life goes
