I had the gastric band YEARS ago and lost about 40 pounds, but then I gained everything back plus more. It gave me horrible acid reflux from then on. A bit later, I got the gastric sleeve to help with my weight loss and in the hopes that it would also help with my GERD. I suffered from damage to my esophagus because of all the acid reflux. I lost about 60 pounds and became very active, but I still had severe acid reflux. Today, I am the heaviest I have ever been and STILL deal with horrible GERD. My doctors want me to have the gastric bypass, but honestly, as much as I want to, if I don't correct my eating habits, then there is no point. But they say it will get rid of my acid reflux, which I have been suffering from since my 20s (I am 40 now). I am at a crossroads and have no idea what to do.

Gastric Bypass will eliminate the acid reflux. Nutrition is also important. Check out our nutrition program to help you get back on track. www.poundofcureweightloss.com/nutrition-counseling-memberships/

It does correct the acid reflux and narrowing of esophagus due to the acid irritation. Wife was a 2mm and could barely eat and had the bypass after the sleeve which was a couple of years ago. Insurance covered most of it because she had an h.hernia that needed to be resolved also. It wasn't weight loss surgery so had to really get the dr to use different codes to get it accepted. She is up and walking around 5 days out but still a little sore. No more acid reflux at all!

Just advise clients on fasting and proper healthy eating habits. There's no point of operation if they will gain it all back. Stop lying to people. You can't eat sugar and expect to maintain your weight. Stop talking nonsense. Advise everyone to eat natural foods, stop sugar and carbs and do IF.
@WesProphecy203210 ай бұрын
Update: She is doing amazingly well now. No more acid reflux at all. All the swelling from the acid damage has substantially decreased. She looks amazing! I think she lost like 80 lbs from the original sleeve procedure and then another 20 from bypass. She is back to eating my grilled ribeye steaks and we save a ton of money when we go out to restaurants now since we share whatever we order. 🙂
@WesProphecy203210 ай бұрын
If you already had the sleeve and suffer from Gerd, definitely get the bypass. A severe case of acid reflux puts you at a higher risk of esophageal cancer. Insurance should cover this procedure. I think we paid like no more than 2500 out of pocket. You just have to work with your Dr and provider to get the proper codes since it's not a weight loss reason for your surgery. I can get you my wife's contact info if you want to know how she got thru it.

On the fence - I worry about GERD down the road - no good options to solve this. I think RYGB + meds provides a lot more weight loss with a better side effect profile.

It's a decent surgery but it does have malabsorptive issues, more so than even a gastric bypass.

I've heard of doing the sleeve and adding on the linx procedure to help reflux!
@apoundofcure Жыл бұрын
Yes, great idea in theory, but I have not found the linx to be particularly helpful in treating reflux after vsg

Interesting. Some studies say there's an 85% success rate in getting off PPIs with linx after sleeve surgery.

I had the gastric sleeve done & I had the most worse heartburn with acid reflux which burned like a :%#.?. I had such bad acid reflux reflux that slowly down the road I needed to get the Bariatric Bypass while they had to fix my insides. I would never get the Gastric Sleeve done to whoever reads this !!!

thank you for commenting on this! I had lap band surgery about 20 years ago. I'm now faced with having the lap band removed due to it no longer being optimal for having a foreign device in my body. I recently had an EGD and found to have severe esophagitis. I'm going to have a revision and was thinking of the gastric sleeve. I met with the doctor today who suggested bypass over sleeve because of acid reflux complications making my symptoms worse.

I was going to get bariatric surgery in 2010 but I backed up and was already in the process of getting my surgery I wasn’t obese that’s why I backed up on my surgery day i was really young and I was this close to getting into the process I did the process of bariatric surgery like 3 times I even did the classes, the testing and etc, but till this day my dr still offers me bariatric surgery ‘ I did my research about bariatric surgery, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass for many years now 😌

After gastric bypas surgery no NSAIDS, does that also count for the sleeve gastrectomy? And the iron deficiency, is that the same for both types of wls?
@apoundofcure6 ай бұрын
The short answer is no. Both occur only after a bypass. Check out this video for more info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnO3h5qFgqdkprc

My concern with this is what if the patient falls in love with exercise/the gym. If the patient got into powerlifting, bodybuilding, Olympic weightlifting, sprinting, they will need somewhere between 2,500 to 10,000 calories daily (depending on height, current weight, exercise frequency, and intensity). Of course the new, smaller, stomach pouch can expand. However it can only expand so much. It being reversible can be really detrimental to the patients mental health as they’d have to limit their exercise that they love. I for one love the gym. So I know of if I was overweight/obese enough or had a condition that would warrant a gastric sleeve/bypass surgery, I’d eventually fall in love with the gym. According to the caloric calculator I found online, when I’m most consistent with my exercise, (powerlifting, bodybuilding, and sprinting) my body needs 3-5 thousand calories a day for my goals. My maintenance calories are at about 3500-4000 daily when I’m consistently active. I’m only 5’8 (about 173 cm) so I’d be worried about not meeting those requirements if I had one of these two surgeries. Obviously this doesn’t apply to me but still. It has me speculating

Depends on what you're looking for. They are both good surgeries.

Hi. I came to the surgeon thinking of doing bypass surgery, but he recommended a sleeve for two reasons: I weigh 'only' 100 kg, and the fact that I'm young (21) and plan to have children in the future. Do you agree with him? Because I'm really afraid of gaining weight again.

The consultant wanted me to have an MRI of the liver. I can have a liver failure if adopting sleeve surgery or by-pass: I do not know which one. I am 58 years old, and the Gamma of the liver is very high due to fat and psychotropic drugs: venlafaxine, buspirone, quetiapine, clonazepam and pregabalin for my anxiety disorder. I was diagnosed 20 years ago. I always was skinny but with medications I gained a lot of weight: now weighing 160kgs.

@LouDeVere10 ай бұрын
I'd have thought that smoking weed would be the worst possible thing to do prior to or post surgery as weed makes you want to eat! I remember when I was young having a joint, getting high and then going to the fridge and thinking, 'right, where do I start!' I bet weed is actually a cause of many people becoming obese in the first place, much as it can be very enjoyable.

Fantastic question, i gained about 50 lbs from taking weed ones a week only, is there any way to continue taking weed (need it) and still be abel to watch the weight?
