Regarding shell shocked, I remember a story of a high end British commander (don't remember the rank, but higher than officer) visiting a ww1 hospital (either this was just near the end or a year after the end of ww1) to give his wishes to the soilders who were there. At one point, they were visiting one of the shell shocked soilders who was in the garden and the commander removed his hat. As soon as the soilder saw him do that, he went into a panic frenzy, screaming and cowering till the commander put his hat back on. No one knew why taking a hat triggered his PTSD, but it likely had to do with seeing something horrific connecting to a removed hat.

Here’s how ww1 started you did a brief explanation but I’ll give it full In the city of Sarajevo in the province of Bosnia (under the control of the Austria-Hungarian empire) the archduke franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian Hungarian throne) was assasinated by a Bosnian-Serbian nationalist along with his wife after the assassination almost 2-3 days Austria received a blank check from Germany(this would guarantee a German interference on the side of Austria in case of war) Austria then sent a list of 10 demands to Serbia as the assassin had ties to Serbia and maybe its government and believe it or not Serbia actually accepted the demands except for the last one but Austria Hungary wanted war so they changed the demands until it was a guaranteed that Serbia would refuse and when when they did Austria had the means for war and took the opportunity now here’s the thing Russia was allied to Serbia and with Serbia being declared on Russia began mobilization of its forces Germany kinda wanting to not let this spread to a full continent war sent an ultimatum to Russia to stop mobilization of its forces and Russia ignored it so Germany mobilized and declared war on Russia but Russia was allies to France so with the declaration of war on Russia Germany also declared war on France so it was Germany and Austria Hungary Vs Russia France and Serbia before the invasion of Belgium which brought the uk into the war
