Gathering Reference Images from Video Games for Prop Making - Starfield Rattler

The first step in replica prop making is gathering reference images. Modern video games have made it even easier to collect high resolution images of our favorite weapons and sets of armor. Bill is embarking on a build of the Rattler from Starfield and goes through the process of collecting various views of the prop as well as scaling the images to the correct size before starting the build.

To resize the Inkscape page precisely before you export the image, Select all (CTRL+A) and then resize the page to your selection with CTRL+SHIFT+R.

Once the Starfield Creation Kit is out you could almost certainly just lift the in game models out and work from those but in the mean time this certainly does the job!

And here I thought I was clever opening screenshots in MS Paint, laboriously converting them to line drawings, printing and cutting them apart to glue onto a block of hard foam, which I then carved down to a static replica, then added details to. I have got to buckle down and learn Inkscape. It looks like just what I need.

I really like how there are different Manufacturers of weapons in Starfield and they all feel very different. The Rattler is an awesome design and I'm also very fond of the Razorback. But my favorite weapon in game has to be the actual best gun I've encountered, the Big Bang energy shotgun. It looks so bulky and retro, which I find awesome and very different, and I hope someone makes one soon enough.

Fusion 360 allows Imperial measurements in fact when you send it to Cura in 3MF it will come out the correct size for mm

The Rattler uses .27 Caliber ammo in game. Since caliber is the inner diameter of the barrel, I'm really curious if they accurately modeled that in game. Could scale your model entirely around the front shot of the barrel if so.

In the game files the barrel and suppressor have different diameters, so I wouldn’t count on them being reliable for scaling.

One thing I do sometimes is capturing a turn around of the object, as many different view angles as possible, then export a bunch of screenshot and send the pictures to Meshroom. There, photogrammetry creates the 3d mesh. ;)

You've done videos before on how to create a 3d model from multiple photographs. Could you not get a 3d model from screenshotting the view being rotated when inspecting a weapon?

It would be super interesting trying to use screenshots for photogrammetry.

IMO, and maybe viewed shady by some, but if it's used just for reference it's the same as goin in the game and screenshot it, is to use Ninja ripper, get the mesh and textures from any game, import in your DCC app of choice, blender, max maya, etc, and remodel it in high poly for print and stuff.

If you can get your hands on the 3D model, that can be crazy useful. At the time of recording this video nobody had figured out how to get Starfield models yet, but that has changed, as you'll see in the next video.

Bethesda generally has very favorable mod support and their are mod tools for their older games that make exporting models pretty easy but they aren't always perfect. There are even more frowned upon methods like scrubbing through system or gpu memory and ripping assets from that.

I really liked your Satisfactory helmet video and I'm looking into getting better at modelling stuff. But would grabbing a lot of screenshots and import them to a photogrammetry program work out or am I missing something? Please make a Grendel at some point, I would absolutely love to have a prop Grendel!

@@punishedprops Sounds like you have an idea for your next video. As far as I can understand the "background" would be perfectly isolated and you should be able to add a "picture" from any angle you want, at least in Starfield, so it should work. But I might be wrong.
