The landslide was due to the fire on Wiley Oakley Road. It was the wildfire of several years ago and people were killed there it was so serious.

The fire definitely impacted the integrity of the soil in the area.
@horsefancy5 ай бұрын
I mean, the Smokys are getting shorter every year (and it is not JUST because I might pick up a rock or two every time I hike.....) and every house put up there makes it weaker and weaker. Those natural disasters are natural, and we get in the way. I am sorry for those peoples' loss.

Wiley Oakly Drive was also impacted by the wildfires several years ago?

Thats correct. Soil around the area has likely been compromised.

We live in northern Illinois and own a cabin in Gatlinburg. We come to Gatlinburg for the mild weather. We always comment on how calm the wind is compaired to where we live. The ice and snow last one or two days then its 60. We are coming back this week because its 97 here and only 91 in Tenn.

What do the idiots expect when they’re building literally on the sides of unstable mountain because they’ve made it unstable by all their buildings. They know where they live. They know what chance they take. I do not feel sorry for them.

This earth is a changing place always something shifting,moving,flowing ,shaking and the weather well,it's all part of nature. It certainly doesn't always present us humans with the best of conditions. We have had some disruptive events in Ky.too,we had flooding and tornadoes,wind damage. I always hate to see the beautiful trees destroyed. Early warnings do save lives. Y'all be safe down there. We vacationed in Tennessee many times the Smokie's are gorgeous.😊

Thank you! It’s a great report. It’s also good they can sometimes notify us of emergency events. But honestly, is this going to help us, as all sorts of disasters will intensify, as they are doing worldwide? It’s time we start thinking of and discussing true solutions to mitigate these events, before it’s too late. I found this documentary very very helpful: “Water from the air. The path to saving humanity “. Let’s share solutions as well as stories. Thank you!

I find that Gatlinburg and pigeon forge are very greedy I mean how many whiskey joints and putt putt courses do you need. I visited 50 years every summer but I find it way too crowded and expensive. Who wants to spend the whole vacation in traffic. I now travel to other less popular states where nature abounds without seeing roof tops littered on the mountain side.

What horrified me about these images was not the landslide itself, but a landscape completely choked in invasive vines!! What idiot planted English Ivy in the priceless native landscape of the Smoky Mountains? And I think I saw Oriental Bittersweet as well. Those vines alone are as destructive as any wildfire, and you can see they’ve covered and killed the trees and even most of the shrubs on this slope. What happens when the tree roots stabilizing a steep slope die and rot--oh yes, the soil lets go! The owners of these rentals have done this to themselves by letting these vines take hold, and you can be sure they are rapidly spreading to other properties and the park itself. Tennessee needs to get on top of this kind of invasion, or it’s going to lose everything that brings people to the Smokies. These plants will absolutely destroy the forests there, believe me, it’s already happening in a lot of places. I’m sure the Park Service is well aware and sounding the alarm , but is the state government listening?
