I'm writing my art bio for an organisation. As soon as I mention my faith, I will most likely not be shown any more interest. I have little income right now but I will obey Our Blessed Lord and bravely state my Catholic faith. They are a committee and I will pray for their eternal souls.

I would love to hear more extended discussion of the ‘corrosive spirituality’ that afflicts the Catholic Church today. I also agree with you that Jungian psychology has become a substitute religious belief system for many.

A wonderful discussion between two brothers in Christ. As much as I enjoyed Gavin's perspective on Anglican political conflicts on his previous show, the discussions on this channel focus on the essential conflict between good and evil and address what is truly important.

In light of Rod's reference to the Benedictine monastery in Norcia, I feel I should add - in case people do not know - that the monks have rebuilt their monastery at a spot higher up on the mountain, and (I believe) with earthquake resistant materials etc. After the trauma of the quake, they have resumed their life of prayer, and even have new vocations and professions. They may have seen the destruction of their ancient church (only the facade remained) yet their spirit and their commitment to Christ has not dimmed.

Excellent. Here in Ireland it is very obvious of this being the incoming reality. Strong, courageous and holy priests and religious men and women with a zeal for the gospel, instead of the desperate happy clappy nonsense that only creates religious indifference and a blindsightness into left totalitarian rule.

All the same, one must remember Christ's words, "Do not be afraid, I have overcome the world", and also Our Lady's words to Sr Lucia of Fatima, (which I can't quote word for word). She referred to the final battle (over marriage and the family), and that her Immaculate Heart would triumph. So if one has faith, one also has hope (and, one must assume, love also).

Excellent discussion, many interesting points. Bookcase looks great by the way. None of us should be surprised at anything if you can read the signs of the times. Our Lady mentioned ...that this time be an incentive for personal conversion.... to pray in solitude to the Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith and trust in the Lord. How much more do we need to know, we have Akita, we have Medjugorje, we have a plague. Just like in the days of Noah, they go on and on and no repentance yet. This is all a call to repent, to prepare oneself. How much more can God do! He sent His mother, for DECADES, he blots the sun right out of the sky, literally! Our lethargic response will not do. Evil is in high places and its power is very great in the media, in the academy, all over. You can see it seething at the president, the disrespect, the twisting of words, the deliberate fabrications, lie after lie after lie about what the man really says. Never has such deliberate distortion of the truth been so wide-spread and so unified at the same time in so many major sources of the media, absolutely unprecedented. They foster division and hatred of country, and anyone with a differing opinion threatens them. You know they lit up the Empire State building in red to celebrate the communists anniversary! We are deep in insanity and from that flows easy murder of undesirables. If they rationalize killing children in the womb nobody is safe, nobody. We are all only a tick away from their genocide.

Yes, you are correct with all of this. The world has closed its ears to God and replaced Him with all manner of idolatry and perversions. We faithful are having to swim around in a slurry of evil. Detachment from all of this meaningless tinsel and constant prayer will be our only hope. If the world thinks Covid-19 is bad, wait till chapter 2. If the world does not stop its idolatry and cease its apostasy then worse will follow. We have been warned :(

Thank you Gavin and Rod, what a wonderful conversation. It's taken me most of my life to come to terms with growing up in the 60's, particularly in regard to Christian beliefs. As Gavin said, "we have grown up in an eroticised culture the whole of our lives" - so prudes ...........we are not, just deeply spiritual people who believe in the on-going presence of Christ. We live in interesting times, but whether it's a curse or a blessing ....... I don't know? Maybe, it's our job to make it a blessing:0)

Gavin, a beloved Russian priest of blessed memory in my area was once approached by a woman who asked him, "Father, how long would it take to become Orthodox?" He replied ""A lifetime my dear, a lifetime!" It seems difficult for many converts to Eastern Orthodoxy to really understand this, as we often seem them - while still in Orthodox diapers - presuming to prematurely critique and even criticize the Mother that graciously, and most often too hastily, took them in without proper catechesis (most often a period of two years in most jurisdictions). In all fairness to a real sense of balance, you must read some Eastern Orthodox theologians, writers and intellectuals who go so far as to say that The Benedict Option is "0% Eastern Orthodox theology".

Another well-known convert (to Catholicism) is Dr Scott Hahn, who also thought about becoming Orthodox. But he found it too "ethnic", that is, there were many orthodox churches - Greek, Russian Ukrainian, etc, all fairly independent from each other in the matter of belief or acceptance in some areas of Christian faith. He did not find unity there (and felt he wasn't accepted - in one instance - in a Greek ortho church).

Yes! We had NO IDEA that the Church was modernised when He powerfully commanded PD and I to become Catholic with a capital c in 2018. We found the loyal priests quite soon after being baffled as to literally where to GO to be Catholic! Hurrah! Hallelujah! God took us STRAIGHT to the SSPX in UK Praise God! I love the SSPX. I do tend to go on but I can't help but LOVE God's holy Society which is growing BIG in France so the priests tell us. Fr Holden told me that I obviously want all the Truth and not just some of the Truth. Hence, the SSPX! I want it all, I want it now!!!

As an Anglo Catholic, and one with a similar "pre-Ockham medieval" bent to Gavin, I just wish that the modern papacy were not so far removed from the "great tradition". I have also considered Eastern Orthodoxy, but find similar modernist tendencies within that. Rod is right to acknowledge the strength of (small o) orthodoxy in some Evangelical circles who adhere to the great tradition of pre-modern Christianity.

Thanks a lot for the very interesting conversation. I read wih great interest Rod’s “The Benedict Option” and “How Dante saved my life” and offered several copies of the books to friends. I also met and talked to father Cassian Folsom described in the book who was a prior of the Norcia Benedictine monastery described in the book. One thing which worries me and am not sure whether the diagnostic of Rod is so much accurate - has the battle for the family, natural law and sanctity of life been finally lost in US ? Why so much “endism” in Rod’s books. A smell of Apocalypse coming on Christians. Is this surrender and crying that the cultural war has been lost not too pre-mature? Without an attempt to resist and still fight back in a Christian way? Rod is, in places, rather depressive in his assessment of the overall situation in Christendom in US. Interestingly Austin Ruse notes “endism” of Rod Dreher and his pretty pessimistic (some might claim a bit sour or realistic) vision of Christianity in Western democracy like US. See www.crisismagazine.com/2020/rod-dreher-and-his-endism I am not sure whether I am convinced with Rod reasons given for his departure from Catholicism. The Orthodox Church suffers from similar sickness, as well as protestant brothers, not to say civil society. Interesting exchange on how faithful Christians can survive in more and more indifferent, secularist and often left-driven, LGBT/gender ideology motivated society (perhaps more politicians of the liberal and left wing). There are methods exercised in former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe during communist regimes and other angles of the world. Rarely you can make a career in the structures of power as you need to be in line with “party line”. That is why my father, a very good physicist could not go abroad to do research in the West because only party members and not practicing Catholics could go abroad. So he lost many chances of climbing up academic career but he never regretted

The message of the Holy Spirit in these times may be, that ALL those who worship and adore the God-who-was-in-Christ, need to 'de-professionalise' Christianity. Back to the Catacombs; and let the structural 'church' take care of itself......if it can. We can have confidence in God. "Your will be done!", is surely not merely intercession, but a statement of fact.

Seems to me as an orthodox the outcomes were hyjacked. . I sadly see most catholic churches would shock Luther ! As the conversation seems to tend slightly towards gloominess (of suffering) I would like to add a story not unlike Rod's, about the Croatian priest. In 1945, a community of franciscans in Bosnia Hercegovina - the Croatian part of Bosnia - was killed and burned because they refused to renounce Christ. At that time, one of the younger friars (it was a large community of 30) was not at the monastery, but was visiting his parents. When he heard his fellow friars had been arrested, he said to his parents, "I must go and die with my brothers". And he returned to the monastery to be killed with them. Is not this the triumph of love over fear, over death? The martyrdom took place in a town called Siroki Brijeg (translated, "Broad hill", pronounced Sheeroki Breeyeg). It is located about 20 miles from Medjugorje.

I would argue with what Rod Dreher said about lost culture war. Perhaps to some extent the culture war is lost in the US but is it completely lost? No single place of resistance at public square, defending fundamental human rights, Christian values? Such places exist, not many of them but they are there, both at global level like lobbying at the United Nations where we have solid examples of fighting being continued to protect innocent human life and to block promotion of so called reproductive rights (like abortion) as fundamental human rights, to stop demoralizing LGBT driven sex education promoted by WHO. See for example what C-FFAM does at global level (c-fam.org/) or what Ordo Iuris Institute does at EU level (en.ordoiuris.pl/). The war is not yet lost. But I would agree with Gavin, in many countries especially in UK, FR, NL, BE, Spain, Scandinavian countries (especially here with super-efficient machine of social engineering which resulted with almost completely atheist or agnostic society) many battles were lost to those who undermine fundamental human rights (natural law), fight religion, or promote consumerism, ecology and sport as new religions. There the situation is very difficult but not hopeless. We should not be afraid. The God is in control of the world. Let me refer to St. JP II “Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to welcome Christ and accept his power. Help the Pope and all those who wish to serve Christ and with Christ’s power to serve the human person and the whole of mankind. Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ. To his saving power open the boundaries of States, economic and political systems, the vast fields of culture, civilization, and development. Do not be afraid. Christ knows ‘what is in man’. He alone knows it.” These were words of St. John Paul II that we would hear many times during his long and remarkable pontificate. But he spoke them for the first time as Pope 42 years ago today, October 22, 1978, to the crowds gather in St. Peter’s Square for his inaugural homily.
