No, you can use a remote cable. Some Nikon's also have off camera flash built right in.

When I read the comments on your first video, I actually thought you were paying people to leave good comments, but after watching some of you videos I undertand why people leave the fantastic comments! You really rock mate! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to make these nice videos, they explain everything very well in plain understandable English. Thanks once again.

For non TTL you can use any radio trigger that fits your camera/flash. PT-04 seems quite popular. Pocket Wizard is better but more expensive.

You should be able to pick up a lighting stand for under £20 on ebay, a bit more in a proper store. Just make sure it has a standard ¼ inch thread at the end. A tripod would also do the job.

The TV isn't a bad option, but you're talking about shooting teathered via USB. There is a great video on how to do that here on KZbin (not by me) do a search and you'll find it.

Just wanted to say I love your videos keep up the good work and I agree with you a 100% on the comment you maid below " Remember, it's not about the gear you have, it's all about the end result." most photographer think they need to have the best and most expensive equipment to get good result.

Amazing video. Thank you. Made me subscribe. One question. Why did you separate the flash from the camera AND changed your camera settings? In other words couldn't you achieve similar results with the flash connected to the camera but running in manual mode with f11 & 1/250 or so? Thank you !

I really liked Just curious about what you would think about placing the flash lower than the model pointed slightly upward to to light under the chin in strong sunlight like this?
@GavinHoey15 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight, but I own Canon gear, not Nikon. Yes, the CLS system beats Canons hands down, but I'm not about to dump all my Canon gear just for CLS. Remember, it's not about the gear you have, it's all about the end result.

Holding down the zoom button would enable either slave or master mode. If anything it would need to be slave mode. At that point unless he had another 580EX II on the camera to communicate with the OCF then he would either need to be shooting with a 7D or 60D (built in master). Even then it still has a max sync speed of 1/250. So since he is not using a 60D or 7D he needs to use the radio poppers or use a 2nd 580 as a master on camera. Hope this helped.

@wondnaereh i have the d80 also. i use the cls system thats in your camera has built in and works great with sb800,sb900,sb600 you also can use your sb800 in comamder mode to control other off camera flash. the best part is that it works ttl ("through the lens") so no need for a light meter other than what is in your camera. do a youtube search on nikon cls system. i bought a radio trigger then later returned cuz the cls system is really reliable and its in your camera free

@photogavin Hi Gav! nice video as always :D Just a quick question, is it better to put on some sort of diffuser rather than pointing the flash directly to your daughter? Not judging, just curious, because i see a lot of flash being somewhat diffused is better soft looking, and people say that direct flash gives harsh skin tone. Dont know which is better, hope that u could help me here :D cheers

@wondnaereh I know you wrote this 5 months ago, but it bothers me that you don't need wireless devices woth newer Nikons and Nikon flashes. They are already built in. It's called CLS - Creative Lighting System that is triggered by infrared and not the flash itself.

Will my pop-up flash on my Canon 550D/T2i be sufficient. Or do I need to go to an external flash gun? It would be a hassle to carry the flash gun around "just in case" you want to use it in daylight.

Good video... but I think you'd get better results if the sun is behind the subject, thus putting the face fully in her own shadow. Then use fill flash to light the face from the side. You'll get great portrait light, and probably a nice hair rim light from the sun. :)
