I think he said in an interview he had written a rough sketch for the timeline before this. Lucas always likes to begin the story in the middle, because "beginnings are boring." In fact I think it was released in a magazine or something like that the story of the republic into the Empire back in the late '70's. If you watch The Clone Wars, which Lucas had enormous control over, a large portion of the episodes will open in some form of action or battle in progress.
@martianmanhunter374 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicalMusic2002 IIRC, the rough idea of how the peaceful Republic was corrupted and turned into the Empire is explained in the novelization of A New Hope. Palpatine is even name dropped but at that stage he was merely a puppet ruler under the control of Governors and military officials like Tarkin. Lucas had many themes and ideas in his head but he constantly reworked his ideas.

Peter Cushing (Tarkin) I cant say enough good things about, and neither could the cast and crew, the guy was very funny, classy, and an all around British gentleman. He and Christopher Lee (Count Dooku) were great friends for decades having done the 1950's Hammer horror Dracula films for many years. Tarkin was the first villain as a kid that i really hated, but years later I did research into a lot of the actors on the cast for Star Wars and it shocked me to find out when I was 13 that msot of the actors who played badguys were as far away from their characters as you could get. About the only one that didnt have as much enthusiasm for the material was, ironically, Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan). He didn't particularly like Star Wars but he was never really mean-spirited about it. And he did have some fun moments on set especially with Mark Hamill between scenes, and Mark Hamill has some of the msot enthusiasm for his role even to this day. And Hamill usually has the funniest behind the scenes stories.

14:27 The proton torpedoes "turned" because of the gravitational field in the Death Star, during the mission briefing you can see the simulation showing it, some people think it was Luke using the force but the only thing Luke accomplished with the force in that scene was getting a feeling on when to shoot, the targeting computer wasn't 100% accurate, shoot too soon and the torpedoes would catch up with the gravitational pull and thus hit the surface, shoot too late and they wouldn't reach the optimal angle to turn in time which would result in them hitting the surface as well. This also explains how the star fighters would crash onto the Death Star despite being on space, the station is still built on the same principle as a planet so it requires an artificial gravity field, any objects that are close enough to it would be pulled to it.

In Star Wars lore, blasters fire plasma bolts that are powerful enough to punch through most forms of physical armor and personal energy shields are extremely expensive and rare. The armor that Stormtroopers wear is supposed to protect them from ballistic damage but are specially insulated to absorb blaster bolts and improve the chance of the wearer surviving, though they will at the very least be knocked unconscious. It's not too different to the armor that our troops wear in the field, except that Stormtrooper armor is much less flexible. Lightsabers almost always cauterize any wounds they inflict instantly. However it is not unheard of for some wounds to not do so and bleed, such as when Obi-Wan "disarmed" the Ponda Baba in the Mos Eisley cantina. Luke used the Force to guide the torpedos down into the shaft. It also allowed them to avoid hitting the walls of the shaft before they hit the reactor and therefore explode prematurely. P.S. Yes, I am a nerd, and damn proud of it!

Also the hole he is aiming at is described as "a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port." That's so dirty. And there was a line in the film from one of the other pilots: "Luke, will you be able to pull out in time?" And not to mention the whole idea of the boy Luke growing up to become a man by confronting his own father in a battle of giant glowing phallic symbols... George Lucas was one sick pup. LOL.

I'm so glad you've done this. I hope you'll do the same for ESB and RoTJ. Will you be uploading something like this for your Rogue One watchalong too?

Right now rouge one (and other past movies I've done) are Patreon exclusive. They may down the road be released on YT. The other OT will be made into highlights

I have seen this movie hundreds upon hundreds of times and this was almost as entertaining seeing your expressions and your "what the F!?!?" 😂 Not once have I cried when Obi-Wan was killed, until I saw you cry... 🤨 "It didn't go in" *whispers* "Thats what she said" Well played. 😂🤣😂 Best reaction video I have ever seen. 🙌🏼

It's funny how people always under estimate just how fun and engaging the original is, just because it's so old. There's a reason it launched a decades long phenomenon, it was SO above anything else that was being made at the time! And it changed the way adventure movies were made going forward. Glad you so enjoyed this, it was fun to watch :)

14:29 Yep, along with ISB Colonel Yularen who was in Rebels and was the Admiral who served with General Skywalker in the clone wars. Admiral Motti, the Officer who Vader was Choking died, along with Pol Triedien, the guy who said: “TK-421, do you copy?” Tanbris, the guy who said: “We count 30 Rebel Ships, but there so Small there Avoiding our Turbo lasers” to Vader. Siward Cass, who reported the Deserted Rebel base on Dantooine to Tarkin. Moradmin Bast who told Tarkin that is a chance that the Rebels may win and if he wants his ship standing by. And TK-421 if Han Solo didn’t shoot him, because he would have been unconscious and would have perished in the explosion.

The costumes were indeed expensive. And so were all the extras wearing them. But they looked so much more real and believable than the CGI troopers later on.

I have seen this movie so many times that it's easy for me to forget how weird it is that we don't meet the main character until pretty late in the movie.
