He is absolutely correct - a lot of the misconceptions about gays in the military comes from people who have never served in the Army or any other service branch (i.e. liberal/conservative media, politicians, etc) and they try to influence and even brainwash the rest of America to think their way. I get it, we are all entitled to our own opinions on how we all feel about certain topics, like homosexuals in the military, which I never understood why it was such an issue in the first place. As an openly gay veteran of the Army (and still serving today with 20 years of duty), I learned to respect my country always and conduct myself professionally at all times. If you look out for your Soldiers, they will take care of you, regardless of sexuality, and that's the damn truth, coming from my own experiences. How I've lasted twenty years: you need to have a sense of humor, know how to agree to disagree, and learn how to respect other people's opinions and beliefs. Again, this is America, as servicemen and women, we are protecting our nation's freedom, we also need to respect it in return as well. USA!

There were guys in my basic training unit who were kicked out for being gay, including a drill sergeant. That was in 1988. Gays are accepted (or at least tolerated) now but I think a generation of DADT was the only way to get there.

Yo I know you probably won’t see this but I have to write this to thank you anyway. You have built a platform that reaches so many and to use that platform to educate and share your stories is so important. To hear a straight proud soldier speak about a topic which is ignorantly controversial and crush the stereotypes and hatred from some that come with it is so powerful. I served in the Army during Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and as a gay man it was sometimes hard to navigate. But I was a soldier first and that’s what people need to understand. We all serve for love of country. We are soldiers first and that’s what people should know. We love our country as much as anyone else. We don’t join to hook up or see dicks. lol. Thank you for sharing and breaking it down. It may just change some minds but one thing it will certainly do is help a lot of people who are anxious about enlisting. In all the years I was in the Corps, we usually knew who was homosexual or lesbian BUT we did NOT give a rats ass about their sexual orientation as long as they did their job and didn't bother anyone about it. Did we do dumb-ass stuff some people might have interpreted as gay? Yes! During Desert Storm I watched one of our rifle companies run around butt-naked for half a day when our CO ordered the Battalion to 'dry out' after we were caught in a three day cold rain before we could deploy our tents and shelter-halves! I was at a pig roast hosted by a friend of mine in the Army Reserve. He had a bunch of military friends there, and a couple of the guys were talking about how they liked to go to gay bars. They weren't there to start trouble; no, they were there because they were young, good looking, with hard bodies, and they would have guys buy them drinks all night. The drill sergeant let her be inappropriate, and I got to shower during formation then play my video games on my bed until they were dismissed. They wouldn't let me join formation. At least they were that kind.

As a former, now medically retired, soldier that was active before don't ask don't tell. There were gays in even then. We knew, it was sort of an open secret. Only one that ever got busted for it was a total shit bag. And that is why we "let it slip" that we knew they were gay. We arranged for CID to get wind of this and when and where said soldier would be at the off post german gay bar and they took pics of him entering and leaving then confronted him, court martialed him for lying on an enlistment and BCD'd his sorry butt. Had he been a squared away troop. We would have protected his back like every other member of the Squadron(Cav unit). Hell, we would even run interference for them when they went out on a date. We would take their date with us on a group outing to the bars or movies or whatever, to CYA. We saw no reason for the Commander to know anything. And after we came back from the first Gulf War, that protective nature was even stronger. Not only would we have protected them from discovery, we would have fought, bled, or even committed a crime to cover for them.

When I went to Fort Gordon in Georgia for MOS training, I was there because I had just finished my enlistment in the Marine Corps and was given a great offer if I joined the Army and my MOS changing was a big part of it. Others are just there because they are coming back to active duty and need retraining. A Sergeant in our platoon was almost certainly gay and everyone saw how obvious it was, but he refused to admit it, no matter how often we made it known that we didn't care and maybe sometimes he was the butt of a few jokes, but he was a great NCO and no one cared.

Thanks for posting this! I was in the Air Force during the Clinton administration. I enjoyed my time in the military. I was asked a couple times if I was gay. They noticed my mannerisms and how I behaved differently whenever I had to deal with men vs women. I worked in the services career field aka mwr. It was fun due to the fact I got to work at the base gym. I'll just leave it at that. Have a great day and take care!
