That "Quit being poor" meme got me. I was stationed at an Airbase that rhymes with "why not". I had some financial issues at the time. First shirt looked at my insanely high food costs. Because of my job schedule, there was no way I could ever eat at the chow hall(12-16 hour work day). Of course the PX was always closed when I was off work. Our flight commander point blank asked my first sergeant "why can't he get a job" versus giving me BAS. No one in my section ever went to chow because we had to be at work. I bet I saved the Airforce money on that one!

You gotta get creative with shifts like that, we would just send people to the chow hall in rotations while we were technically "on the clock" at least an hour (usually more) of my 12 hour shift was spent hitting up the chow hall and the PX. Granted you're not hourly in the military anyway, so it's not like you're doing anything wrong as long as your supervisor isn't a complete asshat and knows people need to eat. If your leadership won't let you go get chow when it's available, or have it brought to you, they're failing as leaders. Now if it's the night shift and there's no night shift DFAC that's an issue, but that's something again leadership should send up the chain and at a minimum get MRE supply authorized so you at least have the *option* of eating food provided by the army (even if it's an MRE every freaking night).

Not all vets are deserving of support. I can name you a few vets who served in the last 10 years who are utter pieces of s**t. My town's local "Animal Control Officer" is one, she got out of the service and took up this job and thinks she has the authority to order people around, no really, she had literally stopped people and demanded to see their dog's vaccination papers like it was Nazi f**king Germany and she was the Gestapo. The b***h even came up into my back yard and tried to open my kennel to let my dogs out so she could pick them up and charge me a fine to get them back. Another one works for the city, his job is to mow un-mowed lawns that the city then fines you for. The equipment is maintained and fuel by a fee tacked onto the water bill every month. He uses that city equipment and tax dollars to mow his own lawn. The 3rd one is an a$$hole who got a dishonorable discharge because he had a serious issue with authority figures telling him what to do. F**ker will literally trespass on your property and get verbally aggressive with you when you tell him he can't be there and needs to leave.

In Water Buffalo rifle cleaning lady's defense, at the end of one of my schools they kept kicking back my M16 over and over, even for a spec of burnt powder. Not even the full star chamber. So I went to the PX and got a drill and sander, and the sheets. Hooked up that star chamber brush to the drill and went at it, and then took the sander to the bolt. Had them both out of the factory shiny steel. Except, apparently, they don't come out shiny but with their protective black coating. Tried to turn it in, the armorer called the SSG. Had a long talk about that the school was coming to an end, and they needed to both keep us busy so we don't fuck around and get and trouble, and also get their weapons cleaned even if we didn't use them. So I spend the remainder of the week until I graduated with a rake instead of a rifle.

since you mentioned the wildlife... we were on mobe training for desert storm at Ft Picket Va. .As MPs we are given the awesome authority of firing the M60 crew serve weapon... I added that part because I was the driver and the friggin 60 gunner which is in possible...misspelled on pourpoise... any who... we were doing night fire when a couple of deer wandered onto the range... which the deer must have been deaf... anny hooo... since we use tracers... it was kinda funny to see everyone firing down range and then everyone is firing to the left. needless to say... but I'm gonna say it... the cadre were not exactly happy and a couple of guys were tasked the next day with doing clean up of brass and such....they said that " if that were the enmie we have nothing to worry about..... "
