the joyo pedal sounded decent to me, but it seemed that the tone control hardly affected the sound

The problem is that the tone spectrum seems to exist all in the last quarter of the knob. It does change but only at the very high end. he didn't turn it far enough.

Technically speaking, the Ibanez TS-9 is a clone of itself. Maxon was making all of Ibanez's Tubescreamers up until about 2002.

Skalarwellen Technik Oh yeah sorry you're totally right I mixed up my facts a bit. Previously Maxon was either partnered with or owned Ibanez and Maxon produced the Ibanez tubescreamer until 2002. In 2002 Maxon and Ibanez parted ways.

+Jarrod Iaria So in other words, unless you are buying an original TS9 or TS808 2nd hand, you actually get closer to this original tube-screamer tone buy getting one othe the Maxon pedals (that were indeed comissioned to build both the TS9 & 808 before 2002). If i am correct the maxon OD9 & OD808 are still cheaper than the ibanez branded reissue ts9 & ts808's, and also true bypass, so in my opinion If i wanted the genuine original, I would probably put these up against each other. SAying that I have been quite happy with my bad monkey & Boss SD1 super overdrive "clones" as they do indeed seem to have a bit more grit than the real TS pedals.
@skalarwellentechnik5744
@skalarwellentechnik5744 8 жыл бұрын
Southampton Guitar Academy I'm pretty sure the Od808 has a buffered output. according to maxon the OD9 is more of a 808 in a 9 housing with true bypass and not a TS9.

I actually really loved how the bad monkey sounded more than the tube screamer. It seems to have a bit more punch if needed. I would buy a bad monkey over a tube screamer now, but I'm also a metal guitarist so that might make a bit more sense

I have a Joyo Vintage Overdrive myself through the exact same amp the Bugera 333. And it's absolutely killer! Although i have made 1 mod. I switched the diodes out for the ones used in the original tube screamer. The result is more aggressive but much more tube like. I also installed a bass boost switch which is very easy to do and brings a huge fullness to the pedal. I seriously wouldn't write it off.

i thought the Digitech sounded flat, buzzy and fake, with a lot of un-natural overtones, did'nt make me think of a tube amp at all, the Joyo on the other hand has a more natural and very pleasing crunchy tone, fullier with more texture (true bass, true down and high mediums) very nice for a cheap pedal, the TS9 is on the same league too !

I've owned all 3 pedals....all very good in their own way. However, if you're up on stage and hit an overdrive pedal (with a drummer and bass player, vocalist and maybe more) the slight differences are soon lost. So for my fave, and for the cost....I pick the Joyo. It's a classic tone OD that saves you $$.

I think that any gear comparisons should be done blind because when you can see the tube screamer, or the gibson/fender guitar, or the marshall etc amplifier, you automatically give these brands more credence because of the image these overpriced things have in peoples minds which, like it or not, does influence peoples opinions. If you listened to these clips in a random order blindly and without knowing which was which, and were honest with yourself you'd hear hardly any difference between the TS and bad monkey and struggle to pick the TS out. I know that andertons shop made fender vs squier and gibson vs epiphone "blind" comparison videos but when you're in the business of selling instruments, it's not in your best interests to say the squier or epiphone sounds just the same so these really need to be done independantly by people who have no vested interest in the result, as a music shop does for example.

Too many so called 'Purists' out there. Any differences between these pedals is so small that you'd never pick it out in a gigging situation. The 'Joyo' is just as good as any other similar overdrive pedal. I have both so feel able to comment. Check out 'Nux' too. Very good.

I agree. "Brand snobbery" it's called. Many overdrive pedals are very similar and the midrange voicing is often the only really discernable difference. Caline is a great company also that do some clones (no tubescreamers though)

the Nux overdrive (the green one) and the Joyo Vintage Overdrive are not the same at all. Very different voicing. Harley Benton is the name used to market Joyo Pedals in Europe. Also...Ammoon is another company that has exact Joyo pedals with the Ammoon name and different graphics. There is also Kokko (maybe Nux in a smaller housing?) with overdrive pedals for $15. I got my Nux OD3 for $17 and I had Joyo Vintage Overdrive for $25. All of the Chinese pedals are great. I don't trust the tube amps but the pedals are great. I own many.

CS, you totally nailed it. I was going to give the same review that you did. The original Ibanez one sounded the best and the most natural, and the Digitech would really sound better for a higher gain amp or as a boost. That joyo one just sounded "weak and cheap" to me and very "choppy". I like your reviews the best on KZbin, very simple and clear to understand. Keep up the great work. Cheers

Great vid, very useful too. I've been wanting to hear a good comparison of these for ages. I really liked the bad monkey and I agree completely with the comments made. In other vids I've seen its only been marked down for not being identical to the TS-9 instead of being praised for its slight difference which is actually a benefit for heavier stuff. Im convinced to get a bad monkey for my SS Marshall as a back up for when my Laney IRT Studio needs new valves. Cheers, Colin

I have a Maxon OD808 which I love and is my main OD but I just bought a Bad Monkey and I love it. TBH, the only reason I bought it is as a back-up but also because they have been discontinued and I just wanted one. It won't replace my Maxon as my main OD but will be used for recording. Gives a great variation on tone (due to the extra EQ) where the Maxon doesn't :)

Great advice mate! Buying a Bad Monkey now because the Ibanez TS-9 sells for over 250$ where i am. I like the sound, i'm even more convinced now, it's pretty darn close. I reckon that on low gain it should provide a good bluesy tone.

One of the best tube screamers I've ever heard is without a doubt the deadhorse overdrive by pro tone pedals. The idea behind it was to create a pedal that was essentially an ibanez tube screamer with some of the best after market mods available already equipped. I love it, costs around $200 I think, you have to order them direct from pro-tone and they're built to order.

This is a great attempt, but what I would have liked to hear was a bit of Carlos Santana style screaming lead solo, and how that sounds on each pedal. I wouldn't pay for an actual Tube Screamer, but the clone that came closest to that sound, at the high end of the neck, would get my vote. Maybe the Joyo sounds like a TS808, as it's meant to, and that didn't seem as good (to Colin) because he's used to the sound of the TS9? Does CS stand for Colin Salutes?

I don't know man, to my ears, Joyo is pretty, pretty close to the TS9, while Bad Monkey is totally not. I think it's a big difference because BM uses 2-band active tone stack (highs & lows), while the other two pedals use traditional 1 pot for tone options. If you don't believe me, here is a test for all of you out there: try jumping (fast enough) between 5:16 and 6:21 mark. Joyo sounds a bit more trebly because Tone pot is more on the treble at this particular moment. That's a crunch mode examaple being "pushed" at the frontend with higher output / lower gain combinations from TS9 and Joyo Vintage Tubescreamer. There's basically NO difference in sound, or tiny, tiny one. Cheers everyone! That's my 2 cents if anyone cares, :-)... Friendly advice to everyone: If you're on the tight budget, immediatelly go, find & buy Joyo Overdrive, you can basically buy 6-8 pieces of them instead 1 TS9, :-)... My verdict: 1) The Good - TS9 & Joyo 2) The Bad & Slightly Ugly - Bad Monkey

OMG the tube screamer great but not worth the extra money.. Bad monkey and Joyo are the better value and just as good sound... Only the guys that think high priced over rated equipment are the only way.. Ive had all three pedals and the Joyo remains on the board cause well I sold the other pedals for a inflated price to chumps that thought the tube screamer would make them a better players...(like the mechanic that thinks hey if I buy all Snap On tools it will make me the best mechanic... But great review I dig it

I agree they are over priced pedals. It cost nearly nothing to produce pedals in contrast to how much they are sold at. With that said, i personally found the TS9 better sounding than the other two. The difference is very little though and in a gig, no one would be able to tell. My ears are also very picky. I guess it comes down to cash and preference in the end, cash being the biggest factor when it comes to any gears anyways.

Personally I wouldn’t blame it on the industry, but rather the economy as whole. If they sold guitars and pedals for how much they actually cost to make they would never make it. It’s the same with phones, cars, TVs..

The TS9 is amazing. Thanks for the insight. Your videos are honest and to the point. Got an upcoming gig with Diamond Head and my band is going to sound massive.

BOSS Blues Driver BD-2. Sounds great for an overdrive pedal and works well as a boost for a high gain channel

I tried the Joyo Green Legend (from their Iron Man serie). I think it's a good one. I also read after trying it that they are using copies of the vintage TS circuit :)

Colin, do u play bass? I play bass and guitar (more bass now) and I would love to have one pedalboard that I could use for both. What's ur opinion on using guitar pedals for bass and vice versa?

Jacob Kantor I have the bad monkey myself, and since you can turn the low dial all the way up, it works fairly decent on my bass guitar. I just don't use it for live because a have a very accurate amp and my bass has a natural growl, but it could definitely do as a bass overdrive as well as a guitar boost.

I have the joyo and its fantastic! obviously, as shown in this video, it doesn't seem to do too well if you're after a very heavy sound. maybe it's also the equipment he uses. I use mine over a '72 fender sr, playing energetic garage rock n roll and i the pedal does exactly what I was looking for!

on a side note: behringer tube modeler is pretty awesome. it's like having 3 distortion pedals in one for any type of sound and for like $30

Hahahaha LOVE your videos, man! And I really dig my Bad Monkey almost as much as my 808. There's a modded Bad Monkey available now that I'm REALLY interested in checking out! I wonder exactly what it does but there's been an added 2 toggle switches on the side of this modded Bad Monkey, and I can't help but think one of them is for "Boost/Attack," and that's definitely increased my internet!! Have you or anyone else heard/seen this modded version of the Bad Monkey?? If so, thoughts? Cheers!

I had a Bad Monkey. I sold it and am running a Menatone Blue Collar right now. I'm going for an Analogman King of Tone next year.

did you put the effect in the fx loop or between the guitar and the amplifier?

I bought the Joyo on Ebay recently for about $30US free shipping and it is a treat for the price. I thought the Tone control was lacking and this clip confirmed that. Listening to the Low and High EQ changes on the Bad Monkey, it takes care of the EQ much better. That even trumps the TS9..

Very good review, I have those 3 box, and tested under differents efx chains, amps and speakers. I agree about Joyo, it does the job, just a little bit less in the harmonic field, but with Bad Monkey I can't agree in my case on that "nasty " quality you conclude about, IMHO that depends also of the guitar and style played thru, with my Strat with Marshall combo, mic pos 2 and 4 the Bad Monkey did add a special richness sweeten with more character and spark than TS9. With my Ibanes RG570 via my Mesa driven up, that crunchy mod did spice out the soul of my shreeds. I didnt like as a pair of far east boxes dare to outwit my expensive TS9, take some wheathers stations to grip me on that.
