A commemoration on the 150th anniversary of the final issue of William Lloyd Garrison's renowned abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator.
In the pages of his newspaper, Garrison led a crusade against slavery and for the rights of black Americans for 35 years - beginning on January 1, 1831 until the shuttering of the paper on December 29, 1865 following ratification of the 13th Amendment. During the lecture, Dr. Donald Yacovone will examine The Liberator's uncompromising advocacy for equality and Garrison's critical role in shaping politics in the antebellum era and beyond, with a focus on the role of the "agitator" and free press in a democracy.

"I am in earnest-I will not equivocate-I will not excuse-I will not retreat a single inch-AND I WILL BE HEARD.” This is an aspirational stance to have on all matters regarding human rights. Thank you William Lloyd Garrison, and thank you for the delightful talk.

Unfortunately William Lloyd Garrison may have supported the Holocaust if he was somehow still alive in the 1930s and 1940s. Yes William Lloyd Garrison supported equal rights for women and African Americans and geinuinely saw African Americans and women as fellow human beings who should be treated equally but he was unfortunately deeply anti semtic towards Jewish people which makes me think that if he was somehow still alive during the Holocaust then he may have been somewhat a Nazi sympathizer due to him sharing the Nazis anti semtic beliefs although he would still have opposed the Nazis sexist and racist views towards women and people of African descent. Yes William was a admirable human rights activist but we should never forget that William wasn’t perfect and had flaws.

Excellent talk! Very charismatic! "Why Lundy, who was a moderate anti-slavery gradualist had such an impact on Garrison is not entirely clear..." Lundy was not a gradualist-- Garrison was a gradualist until he met Lundy. Lundy is the one who made Garrison see the light.
