Awesome, I’m glad the videos can be of help to you. Are you building a cage for stage rally?

I have them same seats in my car. Very nice.
@DirtyGarage

How comfortable have they been for you on longer drives in the car? They seem to fit well for me and relatively comfortable so far.

@ Dirty Garage I dont really do long drives in the car. Its a tarmac speed event / targa rallysprints type of car. So no realy long use. Most would be like 3 or 4 laps at a time. When i first got them, i would drive maybe 20-30min to and from the events. But shortly after i got the seats, i started trailoring the car to and from events because it was not practical to street drive it. But the seats are pretty comfy, and I have no complaints. I have been in way worse fixed back buckets before.

When it comes to fixed back seats. I think you really do need to go to a motorsport shop that has a good range of race seats in stock. And actually test them out in person. Some seats are quite narrow, and some seats are a little more a spacious. And likewise, some people are quite thin, and some are not. Biying seats should be a bit like buying shoes, you really do need to sit in them before choosing.

That’s definitely the best way to do it, but for me the closest speed shop with parts like that in stock to try out would be 5-8 hours away, so going purely off the dimensions and other’s opinions is about the best I have.

Hey man, loving these videos. Sincere question: why scrap the factory dash bar? I'm asking because I'm building a cage for a street v8 swap gc8. I like how the oem dash bar ties into the unibody, and I'm thinking of welding my pillars to it but I've never seen anyone do that.
@DirtyGarage
@DirtyGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Mostly for strength, if you aren’t adding a dash bar and keeping the oem bar I would keep it removable for ease of working in the car. I would still try to add a bar to complete the cage in the front, whether you bend a bar to follow along the firewall to tie in each pillar or add in crossbars that pass through the firewall to the strut towers. Imo it’s a pretty important additional bar for any cage if it’s allowed.

@@DirtyGarage Thanks for sharing that insight! Yeah, i think you're right about it being stronger. Thanks for helping me make up my mind. I've been staring at the strut mounts for weeks, dreading having to tie them in. Specifically, having to weld in that terribly tight space. I might try to tie it in more inboard... trying to get creative, while keeping it strong.

I am trying to think if there is an easier technique to get the profile for the side of the box. I wonder if it would be easy to use some cheap modeling clay, form a strip of clay over the side of the body, and trace the profile of the clay onto a template. I would hope that would lead to less trial-and-error, but I doubt anyone has modeling clay just sitting around at home.

That could work, I don’t have any around to try though. It’s definitely easier if you have an effective way to cut it out after you make the cardboard design. Using a bandsaw works a lot better than an angle grinder.

LOL, around 7:20 in your time-lapse, it looks like your missus is giving you a tongue lashing for cutting up her tissue box. You should have put a speech bubble in their saying some like “Your dinners in the dog!” :D

According to FIA docs. You need to put bolts through the mounting plate. How do you do that with these boxes?
@DirtyGarage
@DirtyGarage 4 жыл бұрын
The cage was built to ARA/NASA rally rules, which mostly use FIA 253 rules but prefer all items of the cage to be completely welded and to have no bolted in sections.
@karanmalik92

Dirty Garage makes sense. Another basic difference is FIA doesn’t need the sill bars. But does need all foot plates to be bolted. Even if they are welded.

Starting to look like a rally car. Glad you are in contact with a scrutineer, last thing you want to do is put all this work in for nothing
@DirtyGarage

It definitely makes it easier for sure. The rules take most of the thought out of it, but some of the wording can be missed and make it an unacceptable cage. The idea I had with the sill bar I saw from someone else who built a cage for Rally America, though he probably had some issues getting it logbooked since it isn’t apparently approved.
