Hi all - a tip that I have since found that may be useful to you. When making natural glass tiles with the hydroponic tiles, doing it as shown by deconstructing them will lose the metal ore needed to build the tile. To get around this you can build the hydroponic tiles 1 space lower, and use the empty storage command on the tile, which will form the natural glass tile above. If you also do not route any pipes through this new tile (although you may want to for cooling), you can completely avoid losing any materials or having anything buried inside the new tile.

I've found even when using the 500g/s with the valve the glass is still solidifying in the pipes before it gets to the farm tiles. My line isn't much longer than you one you show here so I'm a little confused. Would taking the flow rate lower help? Or have they patched this out of the game or something? Edit: It turns out that the issue was the values orientation. For some reason if I had the valve placed vertically the dupes couldnt access it to change the settings. Switching it to horizontal solved the issue. Leaving this up in case someone else finds it useful :)
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
@@J4MM1E2 Ah good find, I was confused as to why you were having that issue. It is impossible for packets under 1kg to change state, so a valve issue was likely. It is strange that they have to be manually dupe toggled though I think.
@J4MM1E2 Жыл бұрын
@@GCFungus yes, I was too. It didn't display the toggle icon when I changed settings so took me a little while to figure it out. When I checked the errands on the valve after I changed settings it showed it was unreachable.
@claesgyllensvard9275 Жыл бұрын
One extra note on this tip, is that the new tile doesn't necessarily form above the hydroponic, but forms in the direction towards the dup performing the emptying, above or below. So one might need to control the path the dupes take when approaching the hydroponic. Tested post-packed snacks update.

I found another nice method to make natural glass tiles. Put tiles below where you want the natural glass tiles and lay a pipe above it. Fill the pipes with liquid glass, then use the scissor tool to disconnect the pipes from any inputs/outputs so the liquid glass won't move. Then use a dupe with plumbing to empty the pipes. The liquid glass bottles will fall to the ground and form the natural glass tile, and no materials will be buried.

One additional tip to spawn natural tiles, that is the basis behind the "empty storage" natural tile spawner: If you drop a "bottle" of a liquid, and it freezes while sitting on a solid tile, it will form a natural tile. You can combine this with the "empty pipe" command, available to duolicants with the plumber trait, to force create bottles of glass out of pipes. These then freeze into natural tiles shortly after touching the ground if the ground is reasonably thermally conductive. You will need to be quick with your empty pipe command to make sure the glass in the pipes doesn't crack, as well as careful with your plumbing so you get your glass in the pipe above where you want it. I generally use insulated ceramic piping to do this, and control where I want the glass to go by running liquid bridges off of a liquid glass line, where each liquid bridge has a single ceramic insulated pipe at its output, above where I want the natural tile. I'll build 5 bridges in series and run two batches of glass back to back, which will fill 5 ceramic pipes with 10kg of glass each. Then I immediately/urgently empty those 5 pipes, dropping the glass bottles to freeze into 5 natural tiles of the same mass. I deconstruct the old bridges and pipes, add new bridges and single pipes where I want my next tiles, and continue. When I hit a point where I need fewer than 5 tiles, I just place a liquid vent after my final bridge and run until the segment after each bridge is full. The extra glass I use to repair my lead suits. This is similar to the hydroponics emptying approach, in that both create glass natural tiles that aren't entombing anything. You can intentionally entomb pipes/ventilation/power/automation if needed. This approach also keeps the natural tiles at a consistent 10kg mass; rarely relevant, but I appreciate the consistency. If emptying the glass in a vacuum over insulated tiles, it may take a while to cool as well; I generally use standard tiles underneath and replace them later if needed. The downside is the small risk of glass solidifying in the pipes. I've found I have plenty of time when using ceramic insulated pipes, but some of that may change depending on atmosphere and length of pipe. If you have insulite, that would obviously be even better.

Setup a air tight room with hydroponic oxygen generators and an air pump and filter. Use a vent gauge to limit the flow of hydrogen to a hydrogen generator to help take care of your power needs. Then find a salt slush gysser and thermal active pipes to cool your air production room before removing the salt from the brine now above freezing and send it back to the air room to be used in production. This will help with over heating while getting the slush to a usable temperature and creates a sustainable oxygen and more limited power production

I really enjoy your ONI videos. Would you consider a tutorial on long-term building? Basically, how to plan early for important areas and major infrastructure (eg. electrical grid/cooling and ventilation piping, etc. ) in the early game to minimize tear-downs needed for expansion.
@GCFungus2 жыл бұрын
Thanks - yes I did have base planning as a topic but when I came to writing it I struggled to put together enough new useful information to make it worthwhile. A lot of the planning bits I covered as part of their own topics (oxygen, rooms, power), and what was left ended up being a handful of tips that couldn't hold a narrative. I will reflect and see if I can make it work but would be later down the line. For general tips, I would say plan as much as you can but don't be afraid to tear everything down if you have to. The electrical grid I really covered in the power systems tutorial bite, and would highly recommend a spine with transformers coming off horizontally. For piping, try and keep runs together and minimize zig-zagging and unnecesssary crossing as that will simplify things. I like to make pipe 'highways' which then means a crossing pipe can have a dedicated line of bridges in the highway to keep it neat. If you want to see how I've been doing it myself then maybe have a skim through my VOD playlist too!

Yes right to left, because the detection is 5 to the right and 6 to the left for all plants so this direction never changes. I did also have this misconception when I started though, so I could have sworn it was incorrectly written as such in one of the guides.

Was just using glass to make natural tiles and emptied a pipe with 1Kg leftover. it formed a natural tile. Was this know and not mentioned (due to inconvenient methods) or just undiscovered? used the disconnect tool to stop flow and emptied the pipe. pipe had taken cold damage as the 500g flow from a liquid flow control was deposited on the pipe.
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
Yes, any liquid glass popping into the world should make a tile, but if you're doing it with pipes then you need a way to get the liquid glass exactly where you want it anyway (so it needs an output). Therefore I find using hydroponic tiles simply easier to do and slightly less manual than disconnecting lots of pipes, but they're both viable.

Ngl, i have a problem with growing plants in glass tiles, no matter how easy it be to make them. But the cooking algae method produces dirt with buried objects. Is there any way roo cook algae without burying the glass?
@GCFungusАй бұрын
I believe so, but dripping glass is probably not the best way to do that because the glass will form solids and get buried. You can run hot things through a tile below the algae, either a hot liquid in a pipe (e.g. petroleum from a metal refinery) or hot solids on a conveyor rail (e.g. cooled magma). That will then transfer heat to the algae, albeit fairly slowly.

@GCFungus8 күн бұрын
Wild plants don't need fertilizer and grow 4 times more slowly, but their environmental requirements remain the same. Lighting shouldn't be a huge problem, unless you're talking about gas grass or bonbon trees which need specific farm designs that I covered in their Plant Tutorial Bites. For cooling, a regular cooling loop will solve all the problems and I have a Tutorial Bite on that too if you need help!

Pip planting definitely does work with arbor trees. They will plant in any random tile that is suitable, and within 20 tiles of the seed. To get them to plant where you want, you need to block all the other available tiles as I showed with the storage bins, but ladders also work.

I just got a mod to make Natural tiles, the over the top methods to make them in game seem interesting but over the top needlessly complex and why not be able to make tiles naturally? Yes you can abuse Abyssalyte a bit with this, but I avoid doing that. Otherwise I like the look of dirt and other tiles as my Natural tiles. Plus pips are my favorite critter, so being able to make natural tiles without needless hassle feels better, plus its silly you would not be able too considering the science, or sci-fi of this game.

I just consider it part of the game to be honest, but I can definitely see why having a mod makes it much easier. At the end of the day it's up to each player to choose what they do or don't want to use in terms of mods/exploits. Having wild plants is super good though, however you do it!

@MrKalidascopeEyes Жыл бұрын
Power can be produced the resources to maintain a normal farm run out and then there is the dupe labor involved. Automatically gathering the resources use far less power in the short moment they are active then the time the dupe has is worth. Dupes could generate more power on a wheel during the time they would have been farming.
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
For me it's about sustainability. If you do a domestic farm then you have to make sure you have a sustainable supply of fertilizing material so you never run out. With wild planting you don't need that, so then it's just about renewable power which is usually easier. Plus the autosweepers use very little power, because they are only collecting the food when it drops, so they're off 99% of the time.
