Chris Froome. In 2016 he showed that no matter what happens you need to push on, when he ran up Ventoux without his bike.

I've said it before but Honoré Barthélémy- in the 1920 TdF he crashed. He got back up and found he couldn't bend his back so turned his handlebars upside down to continue. He thought he had concussion but it turned out it was a stone flint that had gone into his eye leaving him blind in that eye, as well as a broken shoulder and dislocated wrist. He still managed to finish the Tour and was actually 8th on GC. He lost his eye but continued competing, often taking the glass eye out if it got too dusty and stuffing the socket with cotton wool. He finished 3rd in the 1921 Tour and didn't ride his last GT until 1927.

My uncle Anders Gunnarsson is a triathlete who crashed in the Amsterdam 2017 Ironman. With 18 km (or so) to go he hit a concrete block and totaled his bike. Then he picked up the bike, now in two pieces, and continued the race on foot in his cycling shoes. After finnishing the the ride (on foot) he swiftly changed to his running gear and ran 42 km to the finnish line.
@ricardorix737 жыл бұрын
hehe, you mean 42km.

Johnny Hoogerland ( Dutch ): I the tour of 2011 he was catapulted into a barbed-wire fence by one of the TV-cars. He managed to finish the stage with his legs covered in blood. Afterwards he was taken to the hospital where he got 33 stitches and he still rode the rest of the tour.

I'm delighted that you picked up on Wim van Est. As I remember, he only took up racing quite late in life. My other toughies include the gangster Rik van Looy and Irish amateur Billy Kerr, (RIP) who also took up racing late in life and was as hard as nails. And Beryl Burton? This woman won the UK 12 hour time trial championship (ok, weirdos' event) passing and beating Mike Macnamara, the men's champ. It is rumoured she offered him a liquorish allsort while she did so.

Amanda Coker is my favourite. To average around 237 miles a day for a whole year is absolutely astonishing. She then carried on to 100,000 in just 423 days.

Lauren Dolan wins it for me… that enormous gash in her thigh was awful and not even shown in this video. Plus she wrecked her TT bike and had to continue on a standard road bike. Really just appears like a bad decision to continue instead of abandoning and going straight to the hospital as she was out of the event from injuries anyway www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/lauren-dolan-finishes-junior-womens-time-trial-despite-crash-injuries-351650

If the videos were American, there would at least one American rider. It the show was Russian, a Russian rider would appear on the list. The thing about human nature is, people tend to favor those who share similar traits or behaviors.

Ok it’s not about cycling but I got a contender for toughest athlete - I was in Coventry swimming pool once & one of the swimmers didn’t turn up for the medley relay. So as the coach I stepped in. The kid swimming breaststroke (2nd leg in the relay) dives in. (If you know Coventry long course you’ll know it’s only 1m deep @ both ends. ) & he smashed his two front teeth off the floor of the pool. They were completely shattered & his lips were bruised like a peach. But none of this was know until he had finished his 100metres - in a PB too!!

David Fellows Ok this is not about cycling as well. Last weekend following a huge drinking binge , and with the snow 1m high, I made it down to my local fish and chips shop.

I wanted to hide my comment under a reply there is 100,000 such stories of sports persons going on @ big events (regionals, states, nats, grand finals, TDF, Worlds Olympics) & gaining praise. Give the 17 yo time to live up to their future b4 putting them on such A 4th pedestal. esp if @ 17, she might change careers before shes even An Adult. ps, i lost a shoe @ nats in the steeple chase. & made the city's paper for my run, but not youtube (in 1986)

Carn Soaks I’m glad you said because I was thinking as such. - you’re in the race of your life. You’ve trained all year. You’re not going to stop unless you’re dead. I know I wouldn’t. Maybe the video should be titled incidents of toughness within cycling. Instead of toughest cyclists. All pros & elite level athletes are tough. Because if it was easy everyone would do it.
