These sketch brushes (and of course, the brush engine) are amazing! And all the features to help in game art plus a lot of cool stuff! After using it I fell a little disappointed with the lack of innovation and basic features for game art in Photoshop from the last 5 years I'm using it. Is a challenge even to do something as common nowadays as to paint seamless textures.

It's definitely already good as a paint program. But I suspect some types of animation will still be very difficult to work out without some form of audio track with scrubbing in the timeline. (Dunno if that'll ever come to Krita, but it certainly helps in some other animation programs like Flash or ToonBoom.)
@Gdquest8 жыл бұрын
It's planned, but it's all a matter of funding. It's one of the current kickstarter's stretch goals: www.kickstarter.com/projects/krita/krita-2016-lets-make-text-and-vector-art-awesome

I think krita is as good as photoshop when it comes to drawing and painting... Even though photoshop users are so used to it and don't always want to try new programs... But to me, krita is perfect and its open source ! Wich is really important to me. Though, I get your point its not the best for video games (but I'm not concerned so... good for me lol)
@Gdquest8 жыл бұрын
It's just lacking a handful of things, and there's always room for improvements with any programs. But with the Python API around the corner, it should really make it a great pick for indie game studios: the main thing it's lacking now is a robust system to batch export sprites, and thankfully scripts are great at that!

You can use Krita, yes. Krita is easier to use than Photoshop overall for illustration, as it really focuses on that. I wouldn't say it's plain better - it depends on your exact needs. I appreciate these videos, it's hard to wade through changelogs for what's new/different. Krita is finally becoming a valid competitor to other solutions. I couldn't use it before due to the extreme performance issues. For those wanting to use skeletal animation check out DragonBones (dragonbones.github.io/index.html), it's free. I recently found out about it. It currently lacks z-order animation though there are workarounds for it and the developers are working on it.

Ah, I knew that dragonbones would convert spine anims and all, but didn't know it was an open source animation package. Thanks for the heads up! Gonna follow its progress :)

+GDquest You mentioned that Krita may not quite serve as a full replacement to other solutions such as Photoshop. You should consider making a video explaining what it's missing and how that affects game development. That would easier for people make an informed decision as to whether it would serve them since you know Krita and game development and would be able to break it down.

Krita has come a long way.. This already proves that Photoshop isn't the top APP for artists any longer.. I wouldn't be surprised if Krita becomes more then just a painting software..
@Gdquest8 жыл бұрын
Actually, the Krita project started as a general image editor, a bit like Gimp. But the developers had a good idea when they decided to focus on artists. Photoshop is really powerful when it comes to general image manipulation - and it's good for art/illustration too, but it offers a ton of options that artists probably won't need. With its focus on drawing, Krita offers a pretty friendly environment. I think that's its main strength.

@Gdquest8 жыл бұрын
+allluckyseven Yes you can, but not exactly as in pro-motion. There's a wrap-around painting mode to paint the tiles, so it does what you can see in the bottom right corner, but you're only painting on 1 tile. It's very powerful, used by both game artists and 3d artists for tiling textures. Then you can also do what is shown in the video with array/clone layers.

Probably because I record audio and video separately. In that case, it's based on a (long) written script. When I record the audio, I'm just reading a script. It's not spontaneous. Then, I'm creating an education channel. I really don't want the videos to be like entertainment. That's why I don't upload art time-lapses for instance.
