Like haki is an embodiment of will, devil fruits are the embodiment of dreams and desires. When you have a group or culture crying out for something they will it into existence. This also makes sense with black beards crew. He chose fruits they can most likely awaken because they embodie the dreams and desires of those fruit (that's the theory). This give oda the ability to write and drawl what he dreams of and its leaves him room fro creative writing.

It's a zoan vs. zoan fight. Luffy has the Human-Human Fruit (same as Chopper) just a mythical version: Sun God Nika. So both examples are individuals whose personality perfectly fits with their devil fruits. Both fighters almost lose themselves in their awakened abilities. Oda has a way of showing you the inverse without rubbing your face in it which makes rewatching/rereading so much fun.
