Gear Review: Mosko Moto Backcountry Panniers V 2.0 (Saddlebags)

Time for another gear review, this time we are talking about the soft luggage I have been using for the last few months, the Backcountry Panniers from Mosko Moto.
So far I am very happy with the luggage and they seem to be incredibly rugged and durable. I have had the chance to use them in all manor of weather, terrain and conditions and have not found a major weak point yet, other than a few nit picky issues that I discuss in the video.
Overall I think that these bags are a solid contender for anyone looking at luggage options and definitely for anyone considering soft luggage for motorcycle adventures.

I've ridden with a Giant Loop Great Basin for 4 or 5 years. No one has ever even opened my bags, much less stole something. Though they'd most likely get something that's worthless to them. I keep my valuables in my tank bag and bring it into restaurants and shops.

I ride with some guys using these and for the most part they do the job, though the guys always seen a little frustrated with them, access is a pain. I use a set of $18 horse saddle bags and a old army duffle bag (that I found on the IDBDR last year)all lined with contractor bags, easy access, tons of room, indestructible....

Good review,Tim! I rode with a guy that has the Mosko set up and got a chance to inspect them thoroughly. I was amazed at the quality! Nothing is perfect but a good running GS and Mosko bags is damn close!

My Mosko Brother!!!!!!!!!! Mosko Moto makes some seriously NO JOKE awesome gear as they ride and ride hard themselves! I love my Mosko setup and while yes there are challenges going to soft luggage, I truly believe when you are doing off road riding soft luggage is the ONLY option. Many people going from street to dirt do not realize that dropping the bike is GOING to happen and should happen occasionally if you are adventuring off road. This just comes with uneven and loose terrain, it does not mean you suck when you drop the bike rather that you are pushing yourself a little in terrain that is less predicable. I would like to emphasize that this does not mean go balls out and crash, I simply mean that the off road riding that the bike was made to do is different, the speeds are slower generally and the risk of tipping even when going to your kickstand is higher. I am no expert and don't claim to be but you know me and my philosophy is if you have not dropped the bike you have not found the fun off road yet ;) Soft luggage not only takes the falls without denting, but is much safer to have your various body parts come into contact with.

Always appreciate the content. Two things to look at in future videos (especially as this seems to be something you’re doing kinda professionally) and that’s focus - if you set it, you need to understand how depth of field works and set it appropriately to ensure you’re in focus when doing pieces to camera. Secondly, sound. Get a decent lapel mic or similar. Both of these things have been recurring areas for improvement in your vids and if you got on top of would make good videos great. Keep up the good work. 😎👍🏼

Mosko Moto makes great gear. I had two Reckless 80L bag systems both worked perfectly for our dualsport on/off road trips, but let's be realistic, even though we have never had anything taken from our gear left on the bike, no security system will prevent theft from soft or hard bag systems, both are easily accessible with a good knife or screwdriver. Impact in the right condition with destroying both hard and soft luggage, I have never lost functionality from my Touratech panniers or my Musko Moto gear, Killed the left outer holster on both my Reckless 80 bags by day two on two separate bikes one was at 10 miles per hour off-road in a rock garden and other at 50 MPH on a smooth sweeper corner covered with sand, while the outer shell is tough, the back or front where it attaches to the backing is not as tough and catches on a godown. Once set in the morning, I checked but never had to readjust my tension straps, except when adding or removing gear, those little pieces of velcro to bunch up the extra loose straps is a Godsent, I use to buy harbor freight double-sided velcro to do same, worked, but kept losing them when readjusting the straps especially after a ride, high marks to Mosko Moto for sewing the velcro to the straps. Ride comfort and windage are remarkable, like anything if you don't overload your bike and tune your suspension to the load you carry, you really can't feel the Mosko Moto gear behind, it stays firmly attached to your bike and you have no idea it back there on or off road. I pulled off to a soft shoulder above Santa Rolita Baja mexico onto what looked like black hard pack, turned out to be 6" deep pea gravel, AKA Quicksand, had control down to 2 MPH then bike caught and flipped onto my right leg, leg trapped under hard pannier, broke the leg above the right ankle, loosened boot, no compound fracture, though it was a sprain, rode 1,000 miles home to find it was broke, aluminum Happy-Trailes hard luggage only scratched. I could have just as easily broken my leg with soft luggage and a 500-pound bike crashing down on my leg, but I'm betting with soft luggage the likelihood of a fracture would have been less, or at least it would have been more comfortable trapped under a soft bag. I really wasn't that hard to extract myself out from under the hard pannier, a lot other hard-bag drama and danger is just drama. Bottom line ride what you like.

I have the exact same bags and I love them. I am amazed at the quality of the material and construction. Lots of thought put into the design. On the downside, this quarantine has kept me from traveling. But this too shall pass. I did get the security straps to lock them down. Ride safe....thanks for sharing.

Hi Tim, I can absolutely agree with you. With some experience, I can also say that soft luggage is better than an aluminum case. And as you have noticed yourself, I can break the lock on the suitcase just as quickly ... The key to soft luggage is, as you have also determined ... the weight saving! But I use my top case made of aluminum, because I put my photo and video equipment here and I don’t want to miss the quick opening and closing of the top case. Greetings from Michael from Germany!

A friend of mine has these bags and he has sewn some magnets into the straps. Just little ones, enough to hold in the wind, i suppose you might be able to glue them on also.

I got my Backcountry 2.0 bags when I decided to start doing BDR rides. The OEM bags that I had for my Africa Twin are plastic and wouldn’t survive an unscheduled dismount. While doing the expert section of the MABDR my bike decided to take a nap. These bags took it and each other drop like a champ. These might be the best bags I’ve ever used.

for the inconvenience of the straps, try sewing strips of velcro on them. I've done that with my camera sling bag for example, and I don't see why it wouldn't work here too.

I share the same thoughts you have on soft panniers. I am using Kriega. No matter soft or hard panniers theives have a way of digging into it, whether they wanted to do it or not. When I am away from the bike I use alarm locks locking at/near the opening. That's just my way of securing it. Well at least something.....😅

Great review as I have been debating changing over. You nailed my two concerns, security and constant strap adjusting. Love the convenience of boxes but you only have to drop once to hate them. Interested in the top box set up you are doing.

Nice review! I have a few Mosko Moto pieces on my G310GS and plan on switching to soft luggage on my R1200GSA for the same reasons you mentioned. I also have the same concern about security. When I am away from my bike for an extended period of time, such as going for a long hike, I run a cable lock through my helmet, jacket, pants, bags, etc., and put the bike cover on. It may not be totally theft-proof but it keeps honest people honest, plus it gives me a bit of piece of mind while partaking in whichever activity I happen to be doing. Cheers!

You hit the nail on its head!! I use Mosko Motos and am always worried about my stuff being nicked while in a store or on a hike. I've expressed my concerns to the company but they kept coming back at me with their locking strap. The strap is inconvenient, heavy, and feels like an afterthought. I hope they're watching your video and take note. Having said that, another company I'm eyeing is Lone Rider, they already have a seemingly good locking mechanism. Have you reviewed them before?

Great review Tim. I used soft panniers when I did our Outback trip in 2019. Mainly due to a lot of off road riding. My son Jono and I are planning a North and South America trip next year so luggage is a consideration. Only downside for me is security as we will want to explore off the bikes and I did find accessing things in the soft panniers was a bit of a pain but not a big issue. Thanks for a great vid

You will be the flavour of the month with Mosko Moto Tim, you don't get a better endorsement of a product than that. Must agree what brilliant panniers. You got all the big and small nuiances across .....I find with mine( Australian) given opportunity again I would definitely go for Mosko. I particularly like the quick detachable plate that attaches to the main pannier frames. With my Africa Twin the Acropovic on the right side means to keep widths even the right pannier is smaller because the exhuast takes up valuable space. You spoke of different sizes available and I'm wondering if your exhaust system caused you to apply one smaller than the other!! Great review👌

Thanks Darryl, they are awesome panniers. I could have gone with the off set panniers to compensate for my exhaust on the right but I decided it wouldn't be too big of a deal. The hard cases I had were off set and it always bothered me when I was trying to balance things, not too much but enough for me to try two the same size.

Another great video. Keep it up (Both the videos and the bike!) To keep the excess straps from flapping in the wind I have 1" wide elastic loops slid onto the stap between the bag and the buckle. They are just tight enough so they slide up and down the strap easily. That way I fold up the excess strap into about 3" folds and tuck it all under elastic loops. They work perfectly. (Hope I explained myself ok)

This is by far my favorite pannier system, but unfortunately I havent located a good two-sided rack system for my bike (Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE) that will accommodate it. If someone knows of one, please let me know. But backup plan is Mosko's Reckless 80 v3.0. Biggest concern really is security also. I'm fine with using steelcore straps on this system, but not sure what I will do with the Reckless 80. Edit- Reckless 80 is also lockable with straps, just seems less secure than the backcountry pannier system. But workable. Mosko Moto customer service is top notch.

Great video! I love these soft panniers. I'm just as nit-picky as you though 😎👍 I find that just about everything I buy I end up customizing...90% of the time I use some velcro strips an upholstery sewing kit because it comes with large gauge sewing needles. I wish i had a video but, a buddy of mine ran a small bar through the inside of one pannier, underneath the cowl and to the inside of the other and attached mending plates to each end...the mending plates ran the width of the inside mounting bracket of the panniers which served as a "backboard" so-to-speak to support the mending plates. He rides his FZ07 around the city when he's home so he's not constantly taking them off and putting them back on whenever he takes a trip. It's a pretty high-maintenance trick but it provides a super level of security.

I do like my hard panniers on my 1200 GS Adventure, but it’s true that they are not waterproof anymore, since I drop it a lot too, during off-road! I will probably change to your setup. Hey Sylvain! We tried various magnets during early product development, and with our tool rolls as well - unfortunately there is so much metal in the dirt, the magnets get jammed up straight away and loose their efficacy.

Great review, Tim! I will be buying a more BDR capable bike in the future and these Mosko bags seem to be a great option for soft luggage. It would be hard to give up the added security of hard luggage though, but the tradeoff might make it worth it, like you said. Thanks again for another great video.

Great review, Tim! Appreciate the detail and your opinion. I too, prefer soft luggage, but since I live in South America, security is a big concern. Sure, thieves could easily pry open a plastic or aluminum side case with a screw driver or stout knife. So, I haven’t decided yet which to get yet.

Great review! I also have the nomad and 35L panniers and agree with everything you said. I think the lockability (making up words) is a lot better than the other brand duffel bags I’ve used. At least mosko has somewhat sturdy slots to slide locking straps or cables through. Not magical for quick lockup or as comforting as the modern BMW hard cases, but darn good options for what it is, (with a lot of fiddling heh).

For the straps. Don't roll it all the way to the buckle stop a couple of inches away. Then if you have to adjust you will have a little piece to pull on. Just a thought I don't have these bags.

Hey man kinda funny you switched to soft luggage as well. I made the decision to do the same this year, the giant metal boxes too often end up restricting riding off road and if nothing are a big barbell throwing off balance/handling. I'm going a slightly different route, I'm gonna keep my top box, replace the pillion seat with a rotopax, and put a Giant Loop great Basin on top of that. On my bike both side cases/racks come out to 27lbs empty whereas the Giant Loop weighs only 6 empty and is tight to the bike. That means that I'm right off the bat saving 21lbs and losing nothing. In fact lol It gives me a better way to store tent poles and a fishing rod which so many struggle with who use side cases, so it's a win.

A great and honest review Tim, top job. I've the 2018 version of the BackCountry and they are faultless. This product has had some great thought, effort and quality invested in them and it shows for all the reasons you've given. It can be tough considering the cost versus metal panniers, though these make more sense on so many levels; love #moskomoto

That little stash pocket holds the locking cables ;) also you can roll the loose ends and just velcro it to itself, you dont have to tuck it behind the strap

I'll say this. The security aspect of soft luggage will always be an illusion. A sharp heavy duty knife will cut through them like butter in the hands of a motivated thief. Get hard bags to travel in places where security is an issue. That said... I hear people every day, multiple times nearly every day, complaining about how we have become a consuming society and "everything is throw away anymore." These may be manufactured overseas (Vietnam) but the quality of the materials and overall construction is better than anything else like them out there on the market. Can a person make their own system with other types of bags? Possibly, but it won't be the same. I've been there done that and have used everything from contractor bags to Filsons to milsurp duffles to Moskos to packing my clothes and tools in igloo coolers flying to the north and south poles. These bags, and the whole Mosko Moto line, is worth every penny for someone looking for a virtually indestructible product with the 'little things' built in that are very hard to duplicate for even more money.

Hey Tim...I can see that you are concerned about security and locking your gear when you leave your bike. I have traveled across the USA several times, alone and with others on a motorcycle. I share the same anxiety at the start of most trips. It seems those feelings of theft and loss while on the road, subside in a few days after traveling for a short period. I tend to rationalize it by by reminding myself it has never happened, yet. I try to use some common sense by not parking in low light areas, behind buildings or out of sight. Have you ever lost anything? or has anything ever been taken while you were traveling? ...just wondering. D

I look at it this way. The bike is insured if it gets stolen. Rarely is the stuff in the bags insured and if it is, it likely wouldn’t cover the deductible. I love my Mosko bags but I too would love a little bit more “illusion” of security. I’ve never had anything stolen on a trip but I’m not looking forward to that first time.

A question about your Mosko Moto 35 L Backcountry bags. Did you use packing cubes inside the bags to keep all your gear organized? If so, what brand did you use and what sizes?

I am considering a 3000 mile trip to Sweden. Some days we will be leaving our luggage in the tents when we head out through the trails. One major concern I have is what happens if you drop the bike. Is the flat panel that holds the bags on the bike easily damaged. Or if it does get damaged is it metal that could possibly be beaten into shape again Or is it plastic that can break in half. Obviously that would not be handy if I have 1000 mile ride home

I'm a little late to see this review - but great job Tim. I am currently shopping for an ADV bike and will add some soft luggage, so this helps me out greatly. One question, since the various "side pannier" systems require a rack to mount to, had you considered a rackless/reckless system? My concern is dumping the bike, and while the soft bags probably won't do any damage, the pannier racks 'could' bend the frame/subframe, etc. It seems like a true rackless system would remedy this. But as with everything, there are tradeoffs. I'm curious as to your thoughts ? Thanks, Dan.

What about security wise? What I love about hard paneers is I feel safer leaving my bike out of eye sight and going about my business. With soft paneers I wouldn't leave my bike hanging around.

As time goes by i'm seeing myself going towards the soft panniers but the safety situation is something that still doesn't make me move (yes, i know that hard panniers are not exceptional secure). Mosko has the Steelcore Luggage Locking Strap (which i think is the most secure system they have) but honestly, isn't just too easy to cut that off? It makes me wonder that if i would leave the bike somewhere, i would be always thinking about it: "are the bags safe".

Hey ... for a lockable soft pannier, have you seen the Bumot bags? They lock to the pannier frame so might be what you’re looking for. Great vid BTW! 👍

Thanks, Tim. I've got the Reckless 80 and use Steel Core straps to lock the 80 to the bike and close of its "saddlebags". Could probably use the Steel Core on the Mosko panniers. Mosko has a clip on their site that shows how they use the Steel Core with their 80. cheers

Tim, Thanks for your videos! Very useful and encouraging. I just recent switch from the Reckless 80 to the back country. Somethings that have worked from me: 1. Don't worry about tucking the velco in behind the tighten portion of the strap. Just roll the strap up as tight as possible and wrap the velco around the loose end. They really don't flap and I've never have one come unrolled. This makes it much easier. If they are a little longer than I like. I tuck them in the beaver tail on the edge. 2. The steelcore straps I find too bulky. But, I find using a adjustable cable strap and run them as shown on the MoskMoto website provides the security I feel is necessary. As you mentioned, hard panniers are easy to break the lock on, so you just need to keep the honest people honest. I want to do a quick video for our channel on 'strap maintenance' to help people out and share the tips/tricks I've developed over the last 5 years of testing and product development. Also, we've had a new locking system in development for a while - it should be available on our website by June, if not sooner! Keep your eyes and ears peeled, I think you'll dig this new approach to safety concerns.

These look awesome, wish I had bought these instead of the crappy ones and crappy service from Alt Rider. Could you use one of those steel mesh things you did a review on a while ago? Wrap it around the bag and secure it on somehow?

Thanks Mike. I don't think the PacSafe net is large enough for these. There are a few retractable cables and steelcore straps that seem to work but they are just so bulky.
