And this is why producers exist. It’s easy to fall in love with your own songs and not realize that certain parts don’t need to be repeated for minutes on end, or that the song is really just a power riff jam.

I just wanted to say thanks for hosting this contest. I've learned more about making music in these past few weeks than the last 15 years of guitar playing. Before your 3rd entry video I'd never recorded on anything other than a cell phone. Been pushing my voice hard to get my vocals up to snuff...they won't be 🤣 I think I can convey the gist tho I just hope I can get my entry put together in time. 🤞 Oh and thanks to all the amazing production riff salads out there who inspired me to write a COMPLETE song 😂😂😂 Programming drums with just a mouse is gonna be my make or break. I figured how to get plugins into reaper and make the drums actually record instead of sounding like the buzzer in the Operation board game. Lyrics are done ,half the guitar parts are composed. Just got to finish composing , record an actual quality take, program drums and mix it..in 18 days.

Isn't a standard song pretty much: intro -> verse 1 -> chorus -> verse 2 -> chorus -> solo(?) -> chorus -> outro It's hard to get into songs that have 6 different riffs. It sounds very linear, where a good song brings you back around to that verse or chorus you're looking for. One of the reasons I like Adam Jones of Tool's playing is he'll often change a riff slightly on the second time through. Different arrangement of the notes, a bend on a note or using a dead note that wasn't the first time through, or playing the same thing but with a different feel. It's variation, but the song is still going somewhere and still solid.

I think the main issue is just that these songs have repetition with no melody. Having a melody of any sort (vocals, solo guitar, keyboard, or whatever,) would at least help keep interest. Most of these would be pretty decent with some melody

i honestly have the same short attention span, and everytime he feels it starts to drag i feel the same at the exact same part. That's one of the many tricky aspects of writing music. You make riffs that are sick, but then probably out of fear of not being able to follow up an awesome riff with a better riff, you just end up rinsing and repeating the riff more than it should be there. I've done that, so many times, also failing to add something new upon each repetition of a riff. That really goes a long way.

An instrumental is more than just writing a regular song and not bothering to put lyrics in! Too bad because some of these songs could have worked with a singer. An instrumental that works is structured differently. How are people not getting this yet!
@xneurianx
@xneurianx 3 жыл бұрын
If you are going to write instrumental music, listen to instrumental music and pay attention to how the space is filled. A lot of these tracks and dialling it back specifically to make space for verse vocals, but then not filling the gap with anything. If you're going to follow verse/chorus patterns when writing an instrumental, you're probably going to run into problems. Expand on your ideas, write variations. "What it I changed the rhythm up a bit?" "what if I did something harmonically different, like changing the chord progression under the line?" Keep asking what if. Your song ends when your desire to continue making permutations on your theme stops. If you can't be bothered to develop the idea during an instrumental, people aren't likely to want to keep listening. You can go back to the great riff you've written as long as you provide something new. It doesn't even have to be a lot - even a pad synth in the background subtley changing the harmonic structure can do wonders.

A lot of people don't realize, but I know you do, that even as bad as some of these are, AND HOLY SHIT wow lol, Each one is from someone's heart and it means something to them and they actually think it rocks...it takes guts to put your stuff out for others to critique.. But keep critiquing! So funny..

Just listened to Pelican for the first time. The best name for that genre is “elevator metal”, I think! It’s not so bad. Somebody has to create background music for metal television shows and commercials…

Hey! So I have a song structured out, and lyrics writ up. I don't have computer experience really, I do everything on my phone. Before I send it to you, I want to clean it up a little, add drums, add bass, add lead, and add vocals. I may end up sending you what I have if I can't figure out how to do all that before times up. I have something I can send you RIGHT NOW but I'd much rather send you the finished product. I got 4 friends opinions, they say.. it does not sound like a riff salad, that it is the structure for a good song. Hence my comment on why it'll take me a few more days to a week to submit it (cut off is still the 22nd of this month yeah??? No cutting it short surprises? Just making sure lol

I think you were a little too harsh on Take Two, it definitely sounds like it needed a vocal track, but it also just wasn't a pile of riffs. There were ideas and motifs that were repeated and developed over time and the parts fit together... So I'd call it a proper song. Just not finished lol.

Where the f@ck is the grind? No filth, no noise. All this pristine pansy melodies because"MODERN". What happened to having a little grit in metal. There were no blast beats, no vocals at all, no aggression. Being a grind and death metal drummer of 20+ years I still go back to older albums. And luckily I do find some newer underground stiff online. But it seems the metal of today is a bunch of smooth skin pretty boys that live inside of laptops. Go out, get wasted, break some windows and get in a fight. Get some anger in your music. I will wait.

But these contestants can do a pentatonic scale run at 300+ bps. These contestants and the ones Glenn had on his channel are the reason I'm not into modern metal. I'm into modern blues such as Beth Hart, Samantha Fish, Joe Bonamassa, No Sinner, Southern Avenue, The Heavy, Vintage Trouble... They have the lyrics, singing ability, guitar solo, traditional instruments and originality with each song. Some of them can even change up their songs.

I actually predominantly write that sort of style but I figured Trey wanted “modern and proggy” and I went with that. I would normally do straight death metal though.

My only contribution is that Pelican is a great band, and they actually do have songs with vocals. They're just one of those bands that's hard to figure out because they never really do the same thing often. Like a lot is instrumental, but suddenly you'll have a song pop up with vocals, they do different kinds of feels for each album, yes with a recurring sense of their sound, but y'all know what I mean. Some albums might be more stoner rock feeling, some almost post rock, some that are doom, or even almost drone metal. Moral of this insignificant bit of info, is that seeing a band once live does not represent entirely who they are, and indefinitely. It's also not super responsible or good for the industry, or good for the metal world's reputation for elitism, which I know you aren't being elitist, but still. To tell people that they suck just because of /one/ bad concert experience /you/ specifically had and didn't find more stuff later from them, or possibly even attempt to look for anything else from them and base your opinion on that alone to a wide audience is just kinda shitty to do. Imagine someone seeing one of your videos with more reach than you that they didn't like, and decided all of the videos are bad and told their audience that. I know it's a lot, but just food for thought, I guess.

@DocturNull
@DocturNull 3 жыл бұрын
@@treyxaviermusic I totally understand that, and I know you said that in the video too. I enjoy this series and a lot of your other videos, just saying you have a big platform to be saying one band sucks because of a concert you went to and nothing more. Not a serious thing, as much as I feel it should just be a more mindful thing, for whomever may come across these, and for the community. If it ain't your thing from your experience that's fine, I just don't feel like with a big audience it should just be flat out stated that they suck and what their music is, of you haven't looked into anything beyond it. Basically just saying no need to tell people specifically a band sucks no matter what with no real context other than a show. People are gonna like what they like, and people with a larger presence on the internet, especially in the metal world, and about bands that may not have as much reach, in my opinion just should be left to figure out to other people. If you're gonna be specific about what you don't want to hear, there's other ways than just cutting down one band you saw live once. You weren't a dick about it really, I just thought why pigeonhole a singular band based on one thing, instead of using that /one time/ as an example and simply expanding on it like most other channels by saying just that. It's not a representation of the band itself and you didn't look into them more, just that experience just wasn't your thing. Not just flat out saying they suck, and repeatedly, as a channel dedicated toward metal music. There's enough elitism in the metal world as is, even little things like that can be spun into more, you know that. Idk, I'm not a Pelican fanboy or anything like that just getting all whiney about "my favorite band," just one of the many bands I enjoy listening to, and feel like the metal community, and the world as a whole, needs less "opinion based facts" if that makes any sense. I mean of course you do you, you've got to where you're at for a reason, just a point I felt should be made
