Just got to finish composing , record an actual quality take, program drums and mix it..in 18 days.

Isn't a standard song pretty much: intro -> verse 1 -> chorus -> verse 2 -> chorus -> solo(?) -> chorus -> outro It's hard to get into songs that have 6 different riffs. It sounds very linear, where a good song brings you back around to that verse or chorus you're looking for. One of the reasons I like Adam Jones of Tool's playing is he'll often change a riff slightly on the second time through. Different arrangement of the notes, a bend on a note or using a dead note that wasn't the first time through, or playing the same thing but with a different feel. It's variation, but the song is still going somewhere and still solid.
@shannonmitchell85153 жыл бұрын
I think the main issue is just that these songs have repetition with no melody. Having a melody of any sort (vocals, solo guitar, keyboard, or whatever,) would at least help keep interest. Most of these would be pretty decent with some melody

i honestly have the same short attention span, and everytime he feels it starts to drag i feel the same at the exact same part. That's one of the many tricky aspects of writing music. You make riffs that are sick, but then probably out of fear of not being able to follow up an awesome riff with a better riff, you just end up rinsing and repeating the riff more than it should be there. I've done that, so many times, also failing to add something new upon each repetition of a riff. That really goes a long way.

An instrumental is more than just writing a regular song and not bothering to put lyrics in! Too bad because some of these songs could have worked with a singer. An instrumental that works is structured differently. How are people not getting this yet!
@xneurianx3 жыл бұрын
If you are going to write instrumental music, listen to instrumental music and pay attention to how the space is filled. A lot of these tracks and dialling it back specifically to make space for verse vocals, but then not filling the gap with anything. If you're going to follow verse/chorus patterns when writing an instrumental, you're probably going to run into problems. Expand on your ideas, write variations. "What it I changed the rhythm up a bit?" "what if I did something harmonically different, like changing the chord progression under the line?" Keep asking what if. Your song ends when your desire to continue making permutations on your theme stops. If you can't be bothered to develop the idea during an instrumental, people aren't likely to want to keep listening. You can go back to the great riff you've written as long as you provide something new. It doesn't even have to be a lot - even a pad synth in the background subtley changing the harmonic structure can do wonders.

And luckily I do find some newer underground stiff online. But it seems the metal of today is a bunch of smooth skin pretty boys that live inside of laptops. Go out, get wasted, break some windows and get in a fight. Get some anger in your music. I will wait.

My only contribution is that Pelican is a great band, and they actually do have songs with vocals. They're just one of those bands that's hard to figure out because they never really do the same thing often. Like a lot is instrumental, but suddenly you'll have a song pop up with vocals, they do different kinds of feels for each album, yes with a recurring sense of their sound, but y'all know what I mean. Some albums might be more stoner rock feeling, some almost post rock, some that are doom, or even almost drone metal. Moral of this insignificant bit of info, is that seeing a band once live does not represent entirely who they are, and indefinitely. It's also not super responsible or good for the industry, or good for the metal world's reputation for elitism, which I know you aren't being elitist, but still. To tell people that they suck just because of /one/ bad concert experience /you/ specifically had and didn't find more stuff later from them, or possibly even attempt to look for anything else from them and base your opinion on that alone to a wide audience is just kinda shitty to do. Imagine someone seeing one of your videos with more reach than you that they didn't like, and decided all of the videos are bad and told their audience that. I know it's a lot, but just food for thought, I guess.

just one man’s opinion, no reason to take it any more seriously than that

@@treyxaviermusic I totally understand that, and I know you said that in the video too. I enjoy this series and a lot of your other videos, just saying you have a big platform to be saying one band sucks because of a concert you went to and nothing more. Not a serious thing, as much as I feel it should just be a more mindful thing, for whomever may come across these, and for the community. If it ain't your thing from your experience that's fine, I just don't feel like with a big audience it should just be flat out stated that they suck and what their music is, of you haven't looked into anything beyond it. Basically just saying no need to tell people specifically a band sucks no matter what with no real context other than a show. People are gonna like what they like, and people with a larger presence on the internet, especially in the metal world, and about bands that may not have as much reach, in my opinion just should be left to figure out to other people. If you're gonna be specific about what you don't want to hear, there's other ways than just cutting down one band you saw live once. You weren't a dick about it really, I just thought why pigeonhole a singular band based on one thing, instead of using that /one time/ as an example and simply expanding on it like most other channels by saying just that. It's not a representation of the band itself and you didn't look into them more, just that experience just wasn't your thing. Not just flat out saying they suck, and repeatedly, as a channel dedicated toward metal music. There's enough elitism in the metal world as is, even little things like that can be spun into more, you know that. Idk, I'm not a Pelican fanboy or anything like that just getting all whiney about "my favorite band," just one of the many bands I enjoy listening to, and feel like the metal community, and the world as a whole, needs less "opinion based facts" if that makes any sense. I mean of course you do you, you've got to where you're at for a reason, just a point I felt should be made

So far I think that 15 year old from a couple videos back is the winner

The Black Widow one or the song right after it? My vote is obviously for Black Widow. Hook lines matter.

Does anyone know the exact deadline? I know he said 30 days after he hits 200k, which I assume would make it the 23rd? I just wanna have a concrete idea.
