What Trey said is the most important songwriting tip you can receive. While you are writing your song, you must be critical and picture an audience enjoying your song. Do you give the audience interesting transitions into the next sections? Are you playing the same licks over and over? Do your riffs have good energy? If you answer all of these questions and realize that yes, an audience would enjoy this, congrats! You have a good song!

I blame Poison the Well for the modern riff salad. The Opposite of December had some of the best riffs my teenage mind had ever heard, but they only showed up ONCE during the song. Having said that, the second song would've been my jam in the early 2000s. I would've watched that band and spin kicked my friends during the breakdowns.

It wasn’t always this way... I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Breakdowns that were fresh, call outs that hadn’t been used ad infinitum, bass drops that made the crowd move - all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain
