I put a poll up on our Instagram page and asked what you thought it cost to K Swap my FD RX7 and the price estimates were all over the place. Rightfully so, it's a tough thing to put a value on. There's so many variables that goes into a custom build. Most of the parts on this car were created from scratch, they can't be purchased at a store. Queue the comments telling me I made a mistake K swapping my RX7:

I honestly don't know why so many people get butthurt when someone buys expert labor to reduce the cost and pain of doing things incorrectly. This whole "Built, not bought" pride thing is super silly. If everyone could do everything, then there wouldn't be a need for anyone to have jobs to do anything. (Besides, most of those folks just omit the cost of their own labor efforts. Every action costs something. ;) ) Sometimes, it's just better/smarter/easier to just buy the labor or the finished thing you need, and go straight to having fun. I like that Ben is straight up about this.

@marczamo2500
@marczamo2500 3 жыл бұрын
@@marquisethomas5611 that's very optimistic number. Reality is to get driving and running reliably is minimum $15k and that's with a crappy roller. Solid Good condition fd rollers with full interior including buttons and plastics (those are always missing and/or broken) are running $15k+ easily these days. FDs are shooting up in price and interior pieces are hard to find and very expensive. If you do all the labor yourself with a good clean solid roller, you can do the swap for probably $30k. Remember his roller was not the best...needed body work and a good wrap job is not cheap.

My rotary FC has cost about $20,000 including the price of the car, a full rebuild, and all the extra parts. I rebuilt it because it’s 33 years old and had never been opened. The rebuild cost was about $3000. Now that Ive rebuilt it with modern tech and I didn’t push it much past 300hp it is very reliable and not particularly expensive.

the thing that is frustrating about these types of "I swapped it to be more reliable" videos is if you spent 20-30k on a rotary build or hell, even a billet housing build, you'd be just as reliable. it's the lack of maintenance that kills these cars not normal wear.

After a lot more research and spreadsheets to do comparison swaps I decided to do a 2JZ swap. Yep. Smoother operation. Huge power potential. Cheaper. Yes it's actually cheaper. I started with a GE engine. Even after all the machine work, swap parts, conversion harness, ECU, turbo, ect... Still cheaper. The k Swap parts are EXPENSIVE. So much so that the $500 engine price makes little difference between the two. Still... I really enjoyed your K swap content.

Kinda expensive now but in the long term (and i mean like 10 years down the road) reliability, maintenance and repair costs are gonna make this build worth it. A lot of people in the comments keep talking about power but in all seriousness is it really worth it to have a super beast thats scary to drive and gives you anxiety about one of its parts failing versus a "no worries" daily driver that you could fix in no time and for really cheap. Good job! One thing the "keyboard k-swappers" might not realize or give value to is your networking and building the relationships, the partnerships, and the sponsorships that knocks 'almost $70K' down to 'less than $50K' as described at the end. Again, good job!

Going through the journey and learning as you go is part of the process. Modifying cars is expensive and we have to pay to play. But at the end of the day, I get more enjoyment out of my build than if so was to purchase an more expensive car outright. That's just me.

This is the kind of true to life video I love to watch. Sucks when someone sees build videos, gets excited and drops money on a project car only to find out that the true cost is exponentially higher than what they planned to spend. This results in an unfinished hulk sitting under a tarp and slowly rusting away.

For under $20K US, you could get a 2017 k20C2 6MT Civic Sedan (Canadian version which is well tuned from the factory), cat-less down pipe, RPF1 rims, Tien Springs, replace the shocks and bushings if too old, ditch all the weight meant for cargo (including underside cladding), spend on the RPF1 rims with some cheap Taiwanee tires (SA-57), replace brakes for stuff that can do duel-duty, k-Tune it to lower the Vtec activation. It's a simple build, but with surprising results.

The only thing I dislike is the sound. You could add a properly placed resonator to kill the exhaust rasp in between shifts, and it would sound more refined. A different muffler could also produce a deeper growl.

But I spent two years getting this project done and a tone of time figuring out how to do it and with what parts. It’s hours of research and etc. this is why we’ll sorted swap coat a decent amount.

I’ve spent about $50k total on my sti so far, rebuilt for 900whp and on a low boost 25psi tune to keep things reliable it made 510whp and spun a bearing after about 6000 miles. So here’s to another $10k to get it fixed and hopefully then I’ll get it repainted. Might be a couple years before it’s running again but I should be at about the same cost as yours just about when I’m happy with it. Thinking I’ll shoot for a f-it 700whp build this time though, I’ve got other cars for reliability like my k series accord or restored triumph spitfire-surprisingly reliable and cheap to repair.

@@maiy8786 No, at 2:05 he says he paid 16k for the rolling shell, so add 5k for interior and 3.5k for the wrap and pop up covers. Bro, that's even worse than I thought. He basically paid 24.5k for a non running project, he could've bought a clean running FD for that price and sold all of the rotary stuff. He just absolutely overpaid. All that matters is that he's happy at the end though.

$62 grand. Holy smoke. No doubt I praise your creativity. The question I always ask custom car builders is: how much money was planned versus how much they ended up spending and in the end is it worth it. For that money the car ends up costing the same as the new corvette or Supra then to me the logical choice would be to buy either one of these. Faster, quicker, safer (all the safety techs , airbags etc), handles better, more refined quieter and has factory warranty.
