Likewise. I haven't even asked that one older cousin of mine what his opinion of choosing to serve in Canada's Armed Forces would be, but the fact he had a dog around the times I recall him still serving kinda has me suspecting he'd be saying "no" to that if pressed. Can't say I'm too keen on serving or doing anything for my home country in its current state considering their current "priorities" thus far.

This is the strange thing about the post pandemic job market. Back in 2019 this was not a problem, then the lockdowns happen. We keep hearing these companies say that "no one wants to work." But with how bad the economy is now I know plenty of people that will take even basic work. Plenty of people trying to find a job. And yet we hear from these companies all the damn time. Somebody is lying. So which is it? Do people not want to work or is there this strange hiring freeze everywhere that they would rather be understaffed than hire anyone else?

Born in 1993. Saw the bottom fall out of the economy in 08 and saw relatives lose their jobs through no fault of their own. The economic situation has been declining since then. I used to work at an outlet mall during high school and my first two years of college that is now nearly vacant and closed down. It is surreal how much it resembles a ghost town now. It used to be a busy place where people would go and buy new clothes/tools/etc. and you couldn't even get to the place on black friday. I have a number of guys I went to school with who are dead now from either suicide or drugs. Most people with "decent" jobs work for the government doing fake nonsense or are in some technical job like dentistry and hate it. The whole economy is one giant ponzi scheme propped up by money printing and psychological manipulation of the population.

It’s not that patriotism is dead, it’s that we of the new generation want a nation to be proud of that supports us and makes sure that when we’re involved in a conflict it’s because that SoB country harmed us.

The reason military enlistment is down is that they don't keep their word. Troops are promised simple things like 'if we break you then we will fix you or give you disability' or we need you to do x job' and then they just don't deliver. You see those that play office politics advanced despite screwing over the entire country and those that are almost impossible to replace given pink slips, and you can't even say that at least they didn't break their contract. Keep in mind that they are overall the better employer over most jobs in the US, and that pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

@jamoecw
@jamoecw 24 күн бұрын
@@genestone4951 The reason it is the better employer than most jobs is that it is exempt from certain court rulings that forced jobs to not hire or promote based on tests. That means that they can objectively measure how much you know know about your job versus someone else that is a good bullshitter. It isn't everything but this allows for meritocratic advancement. Add onto that they have a steady paycheck and ensure that you usually get fed and housed, even if it is in a tent or with field rations. The people that join also prefer people that can do things and so there is a culture of meritocracy, until that gets crushed out from the officers at the higher levels. The rest of 'government jobs' don't have any of this.

From H. Beam Piper's Space Viking: "Don't you? You were there; you saw what's happening. The barbarians are rising; they have a leader, and they're uniting. Every society rests on a barbarian base. The people who don't understand civilization, and wouldn't like it if they did. The hitchhikers. The people who create nothing, and who don't appreciate what others have created for them, and who think civilization is something that just exists and that all they need to do is enjoy what they can understand of it-luxuries, a high living standard, and easy work for high pay. Responsibilities? Phooey! What do they have a government for?" Trask nodded. "And now, the hitchhikers think they know more about the car than the people who designed it, so they're going to grab the controls. Zaspar Makann says they can, and he's the Leader." He poured a drink from a decanter that had been looted on Pushan; there was a planet where a republic had been overthrown in favor of a dictatorship four centuries ago, and the planetary dictatorship had fissioned into a dozen regional dictatorships, and now they were down to the peasant-village and handcraft-industry level. "I don't understand it, though. I was reading about Hitler, on the way home. I wouldn't be surprised if Zaspar Makann had been reading about Hitler, too. He's using all Hitler's tricks. But Hitler came to power in a country which had been impoverished by a military defeat. Marduk hasn't fought a war in almost two generations, and that one was a farce." "It wasn't the war that put Hitler into power. It was the fact that the ruling class of his nation, the people who kept things running, were discredited. The masses, the homemade barbarians, didn't have anybody to take their responsibilities for them. What they have on Marduk is a ruling class that has been discrediting itself. A ruling class that's ashamed of its privileges and shirks its duties. A ruling class that has begun to believe that the masses are just as good as they are, which they manifestly are not. And a ruling class that won't use force to maintain its position. And they have a democracy, and they are letting the enemies of democracy shelter themselves behind democratic safeguards."

The saying is kinda meant to spread out over generations, it's not something that happens decade by decade. Obviously it doesn't always hold true, plenty of societies collapse into dust and never rise again. Generally though "good times" are only made by people who are tempered by hard work and perseverance, which usually only happens if they experienced "hard times" themselves.

That whole thing is a joke. "Hard times" they talk about are collapse, then some "strong men" (dictators and tyrants) take over. Usually this does not end well. Sometimes they can be civilized and stable enough that things flourish for a time and the cycle repeats. Usually though the strong men just loot whatever is left, establish a feudal system to keep looting, and everything grinds down to nothing.

I would say that patriotism is less about quality of life and more connected to the goals and values that unite people together. You may struggle with your life but if you know what you are struggling for, if you know that you have some perspective for a better future, and know that people around you feel the same, then you are more motivated and inspired to endure that struggle. But if everyone around just scolds you for what you are and your heritage and you aren't given any incentive to improve yourself or any hope for something better - why would you care for people around you and the place you live?

Getting off social media and with other people in person isn't a "Boomer take" - it's 100% correct. When you're with other people, you can still have fun even complaining. There's more catharsis from actual human interaction when griping about your job and you can form actual deeper connections over shared frustrations. Here's the bigger aspect, though - you might find solutions. Two people complaining their rent is too high and realizing they could get a THREE bedroom apartment for less than their separate one bedroom apartments are costing, giving them a decent living space and spare room, or even three people splitting an apartment (live your sitcom-esque dreams, people). Two of my buddies and I did this straight out of college. A 2 bedroom (with a third half sized bedroom) luxury apartment cost less than smaller ones, so we went in on it and split the rent three ways with the master bedroom guy paying a little more than the other two of us. We had a blast at that place (plus we lucked out being 3 early 20s guys in an apt overlooking the pool and volleyball court). Hell, you want another one? Hanging out with a group of friends, let's just say 4 and you complain about the price of groceries. Everyone else joins in. Eventually you realize if the four of you made a regularly monthly "date" to go grocery shopping together at Costco or Sam's Club, you can save by buying in bulk and dividing it up at home. That's again how we handled groceries in college. We'd go buy damn near whatever we wanted from cereal to soda to steaks and burgers for grilling and it cost us a fraction of what it would at the grocery store. Social media's algorithm promotes negative feedback loops because you're angry about frustration A. Because you engaged with that, you'll see frustration B. Now you get angry about that and engage with it. Humans are more prone to engage with negativity than positivity and algorithms are designed to keep you engaged. When you're with people face to face in the real world, yes, they might be miserable. But they're more prone to talk about their pets, or they can simply talk about a movie or TV show they liked without dozens of people telling them it sucks and they're dumb for enjoying it. Real human connections actively work to lessen negativity and misery. Social media actively promotes negativity and contributes to misery, especially if you don't highly curate your experience with it. The key is to do something about your situation, not wait and rely on the government or others to fix it for you. Small changes will build bigger results. Here's the thing about older generations - they were fucked too. We like to pretend we're the only generation to have struggles.....but we aren't going through the Great Depression. Gen X went through feelings of hopelessness in their government with Vietnam and the Korean War. Millennials went through multiple economic crises as well as well as the protracted war in the Middle East and 9/11, not to mention Waco, the LA Riots, and Oklahoma City bombing to put concerns about authority and its domestic responses. Gen Z and Alpha are dealing with Ukraine and Israel's conflict along with concerns of China/Taiwan issues spiraling and the Floyd/BLM events for domestic concerns. And this is all from a 1981 "millennial" or "Xillenial" here. I'm now 43 with a pretty good sized house and a retirement net worth just over $250k at the moment. My peers from my graduating class are doing alright as well. Don't believe the claims that millenials are screwed and there's nothing that could have been done about it. I don't believe Gen Z is screwed either. We have more control than we let ourselves believe. A lot of it is the choices we make. Some are going to require harder paths than others, but I don't believe in giving up.

I'm just gonna keep my head down and work with what I have until the inevitable collapse happens. Maybe if I'm prepared enough I'll thrive in a way I never could have otherwise

Political left that in turn is way too much controlled by the billionaires got so scared of nationalism that they trashed patriotism. They succeeded extremely well everywhere in west except places like Finland that has unique reasons why things still work (yet it has decreased even here for same reasons). Looks to me when the fighting starts they have a serious issue on their hands and may have to rely on methods used since hallowed antiquity: Give people reasons. People who went to war did so because it improved heir lot in life. Show me even one place in the west where this happens now. Good luck finding out the answer to this dilemma and fast when the time comes and it will come. Few are that keen to go to modern war with drones blowing up your knee caps because some fool who absolutely hates you ant spends lots of money on people to demoralize you constantly wants a bigger yacht.

There is no going back to how things were, in those ways which they were better. What, you got old world blues? There is only going forward and making the future have those good aspects which have been torn down and lost, such is New World Hope
