On the contrary, there are some rooms with ceilings that will harm the player, and having the Hi Jump on is to your disadvantage there. If you sequence break or use a randomizer to get screw attack early, there's rooms you don't want it for as it removes platforms you otherwise need. You can always just glitch the game out with the VAR beam and bug your way through the door. Of course, that ends up in the game restarting from the beginning with you keeping all of your upgrades, but hey whatever works.
@hasamidschwartz87257 жыл бұрын
See, my reading of the door closing is this: In the rest of the game, an extreme of nonlinearity is emphasized. You can go anywhere, you can get things in different orders and feel free to explore, and in some cases you can even sequence break. The story is delivered in an ambient, background sort of way -- here are mochtroids, here's the Wrecked Ship, come to your own conclusions or move on. Tourian, though, is an entirely different story (literally). It's a basically linear level with what are, essentially, cutscenes to deliver story, culminating in an incredibly epic escape sequence. The reason you can't go back is because if you're in this part of the game, you're not here to collect things -- you're here to finish the game. Whereas before it made sense to do things out of order, here it would feel really weird if you got these super dramatic, suspenseful scenes building up to an ending boss fight -- and then you paused and went and found missile tanks for half an hour.
@ShadwSonic7 жыл бұрын

I don't know about that- theirs some groovy ass music in Symphony of the Night, plus the Castlevania series has always been known for excellent music. Being 30 years old in 2021, my first experience of Metroid was metroid prime on the GameCube and its sequels. It's one of my favourite games of all time and one of the many things that stands out to me aside from gameplay is the amazing soundtrack and atmosphere . Super Metroid is a game that I always wanted to play and just never got around to it, until I played it on the Nintendo Switch and it just blew me away. I never realised how much was borrowed and remixed from a game from 1994! It really gave me a new appreciation of super metroid. While the Metroid prime trilogy is my favourite of the whole series, that is mostly due to the nostalgia and I wholly appreciate what super metroid brought to the series. What an amazing game, even in 2021.

I know it's your opinion and I know you said it was going to be controversial, but man I have to supremely disagree on the music front. I listen to Norfair, red Brinstar, Maridia, and Crateria themes all the time. Beautiful pieces and perfect for the atmosphere the game has set. The mesh so undeniably with the game that any other piece in it's place would feel wrong. Outside the game they make for very nice, catchy, easy listening songs that I never feel will get old. I do want to say though that even though it's not "hooking" you, and it's not more "upbeat" and "melodic", do you really think that would have made sense considering the atmosphere and ambience the game has set? Imagine Megaman or Mario's soundtrack ( or their styles ) put into this game. I honestly cannot see it working one bit. Imagine tomahawk man's stage theme, or the over world music for super Mario world overlayed in areas of this game. Catchy, hooking, but totally wrong for 90% of the game. Super Metroid does how ever have those uptempo and meldoic tunes when appropriate, like in boss fights, or escapes, when tensions are high. Anyway, I respect that you have a different taste and that you particularly don't care as much for the music as others would, I just want to voice an opinion a lot of others would have in response, thank you for the video, and for going into such great details to review a stellar classic.

@zackwoods50773 жыл бұрын
Actually there is an easy way to beat Ridley. It's called collecting most if not all of the super missile and energy tanks. You can kill him quickly if you have good accuracy with those super missiles. The energy tanks allow you to ignore dodging his attacks while you unload your super missiles.

Wish i grew up with it but i was born 5 years later. 25:56 The baby had no way to visually recognize Samus. And even if it did. The Samus it imprinted on was wearing the Varia suit, the gravity suit didn't exist at that point in time. But through sound, that low health alarm is recognizable because ot happened during the super metroids kidnapping. The attack and sudden stop is all lore justified. 28:56 I remember my response to the sequence well..."No...Metroid GET AWAY! I'm alright now, IT'S ENOUGH!!!" I was entirely invested in the creatures safety because I knew it was the last of its kind. 29:20 And so when it died...well...to me, it felt a lot less like the absorbed energy from Mother brains laser had been transferred to me... No, I had legitimately believed that the only way I could possibly be doing THAT MUCH DAMAGE was because the souls of the entire species were empowering her, hungry for revenge for being used as a tool. After all, the only reason Samus ever bothered to hunt them down is because Mother brain tried to weaponize them! And considering that Samus would go on to be the final creature in the universe that has their genetics in its body, It felt as though Samus was not their scourge, but their LEGACY.

In my life, I've only had two games on release day. Super Metroid and Castlevania: SotN. I had Mortal Kombat on Genesis and Sonic 3 day after release day. They were close. Super Metroid was an early birthday present for my birthday in '94. In the early 2000s, I sold it along with most of my SNES collection, including my console. Mere days before my birthday this year, I found a near flawless Super Metroid cartridge for a very cheap price in a store in Indianapolis (cartridge and label looked brand new except for a name written in Sharpie on the side of the cartridge). It was an early birthday present to myself. I spent my birthday this year playing through Super Metroid just as I'd spent my birthday in 1994. I didn't forget to rescue the animals.

1) The room at the top of the Wrecked Ship where you have to kill all of the enemies for all three doors to open. Once you kill all of the enemies you just need to open the doors once, then they will be unlocked forever (unless you start over on that save file). 2) I see in the thumbnail for the upcoming Fusion video that it will be called "The Corruption of a Masterpiece." I'm not from the future so I have no idea what that means, but I don't see Fusion blemishing Super in any way. Another great video. Other than the last Save Room and "rusty" controls compared to Fusion and Zero Mission, the only negatives I have with the game are nit picks at most. Like you said, nothing is perfect, but Super Metroid seems to be one of the closest a video game has gotten to perfection.
@GeekCritique8 жыл бұрын
...are you SURE about #1? Because I know I have footage where I made my way through there multiple times, and had to kill all the enemies each time. Does it no longer trigger if you take the time to open all three doors when you've got them all killed? And yeah, nothing Fusion does sullies Super Metroid in any way. The title is more about how Fusion uses Super as a framework, and twists it into something else. You'll see!
@TheAccursedHunter018 жыл бұрын
"Does it no longer trigger if you take the time to open all three doors when you've got them all killed?" Yes, once you kill all of the enemies, you can open all of the doors since they will be switching between a blue and gray color. If you take the time to open all of them once before leaving the room, the doors will be blue forever, meaning that if you go back to that room later, you can open all of the doors even if you haven't killed all of the enemies. There are other doors that work that way as well... although I can't think of any specific examples right now.

Well that's what I meant, it gets plenty of critical acclaim. And yeah, from a sales perspective that is true I suppose. But I can say the same thing about the F-Zero series. Imo it's the all-time best futuristic racing series and Nintendo has abandoned that franchise as well. It sucks. I can tell you what though, if Nintendo intends to keep Metroid and F-Zero (my favorite N franchises) derelict, than I most likely will not buy a Switch.

This was my first Metroid game, back when I was just learning to read. It quickly became a favorite, and remains one to this day. The opening was a big deal for me as a kid, though. It is very text heavy, and Kindergarten me realized that it was beyond my comprehension. When I fell in love with the game, I would revisit it often as my reading ability and vocabulary increased. Having quickly lost the manual, making sense of that intro was important to me. At some point, my older brother pointed out that in the lead up to the title screen it says "Metroid 3" and that blue my mind. I had always just known it as Super Metroid, but the idea that this was part of a series changed everything. The opening gained a new meaning. It wasn't just some backstory for the game's world, it was giving me a glimpse into other Metroid games that existed out there somewhere. It gave me a mission, outside of the game. While it was my brother that found Metroid 2 for me, I'll never forget how good it felt to finally, 5 or so years after first playing Super, find Metroid for NES at a yard sale. So yeah, that's how the opening of Super Metroid got me into the hobby of collecting and playing old games at a young age. Probably helps that you could get a NES with games included for like $10 at a yard sale in the late '90s

This may be something not many people would say, but Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion don’t need remakes, they’re perfect the way they are. Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus did need remakes because they were heavily flawed compared to Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, and compared to their remakes.

@GeekCritique7 жыл бұрын
Ooh yeah, that's a weird one isn't it? Once you have the Power Bombs, go back to the room in Brinstar with the big rocky overhang from the original Metroid that you have to morph ball under. I think it's where you get your first or second missile upgrade. Use a Power Bomb to blow away that overhang, then either jump up there or use the speed booster, and you'll find that room.

Cameron Moore Zero Mission implies its the ruins of the space pirates mothership,which was around chozodia. The explosion could have made chozodia's ruins end in the ship,explaining the upgrades there and the fact the pirates are working around the ship(the platforms close to it) makes it seems that the pirates are after repairing it. Phantoon could be the ghost of all the dead in the ZM ending explosion. But all this doesn't really matter anyway.
@StormsparkPegasus7 жыл бұрын
Actually no it doesn't. The space pirate ship is in a different place. And you CAN find part of the Super Metroid wrecked ship in Zero Mission, before the space pirate ship is destroyed. It's way underground. It's actually implied that the explosion at the end of Zero Mission unearthed it.
@XxTaiMTxX6 жыл бұрын
If you look at the maps of Zero Mission and Super Metroid... The Space Pirate ship actually sits like 30+ map tiles above the location of the "Wrecked Ship", and the Chozo Ruins, if they still exist, would be far above the traversable area in Super Metroid (they're like the highest point in Zero Mission, and they actually sit on top of that huge wall (rock cliff) where the elevator that goes into upper Brinstar (to the right of where your ship lands) is located. Likewise, the Destroyed Pirate Ship is also further to the right than where the Wrecked Ship is actually located.

Quick note to players playing nowadays (though this may have been noted elsehwere in the comments): In the Top room in Wrecked Ship, where you have to kill everything to progress, if you open all three doors after killing the enemies, you don't have to do it again, and the doors stay blue.

In my head cannon, Zebes was never destroyed; I always imagined that the self destruction sent fire and debris through the tunnels of the game, purging everything in them, but ultimately leaving the planet intact. After all, you can see Samus on the surface of a planet at the end of Metroid 1; I kind of always just assumed that she was standing just outside of the escape route.

Well, for my money, back in 1994, I'd poked around at Metroid a little at a friend's house, but this game was really my introduction to the Metroid series. And... that intro was sooooo good. The primer on the previous games was really nice for someone who never owned an NES or Game Boy, and the digitized voice and all really set me up for a very different experience from the likes of Mario World and Star Fox. And then... Well... I mean, keeping in mind that I'd only been exposed to Ridley as a little hopping sprite that spat fireballs, and then it's like HOLY SHIT SPACE DRAGON WAS THIS WHAT HE ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS PEOPLE WATCH THE TAIL OH GOD SELF DESTRUCT RUN RUN RUN! Not to sound like I hate this game--I don't--but you didn't cover some of this game's most blatant flaws, and I think part of that is the nostalgia making it easy to forgive those flaws. For example, as your UI fills up with more and more items, it can get really annoying having to cycle through them all. And why is the Super Bomb, an item you can only use in ball form, on the same cycle as the missiles, grapple beam, and scanner? Also, I see the run button as a weakness rather than a strength. Later Metroid games just had Samus start off slow, but pick up speed as she ran. It's not necessary, and that button could have been used for something else, like the scanner. While it is neat that the game has these tricks like trading weapon reserves for health, there's no way to know that's even an option unless you were told about it or read about it somewhere. Despite having these brilliant and natural tutorials for the wall jump and shine spark abilities, the game never even hints at these other abilities in the game. Super Metroid was certainly great for the time, but the later games improved on its foundation when it comes to gameplay and controls. It's dated by modern standards, but like it's predecessors, it has to be judged based on the context of when it came out, rather than comparing it to the games that would come later. It's not my favorite Metroid game, but it's extremely impressive for a SNES title.
@jackyoungiii37703 жыл бұрын
I would rather call these “quirks” than flaws. I agree that cycling through weapons felt a bit unnatural but it’s easy to get used to. I also liked the run button because you could better tweak and adjust individual jumps which was key for sequence breaking. I won’t even lie to you, Dread’s controls and movements are so good that for the first time ever, Super is DATED in comparison. I can also agree that the game lacked conveyance at times, especially with the crystal flash and other abilities ( I actually never found the plasma beam or spring ball on my first playthrough) but it’s that very thing that allows for people to discover new things decades later. This game still absolutely holds up to today’s standards but Dread might be the game to finally dethrone it.
