We have water TDS around 1000 which gets reduced to about 60-80. We store the filtered water in earthen pot(Matka). TDS gets to around 120-140 ands tastes very good plus cold as well. Water with very low tds actually starts dissolving calcium magnesium from our body itself and caused various deficiencies.

Many brands are there which provides uv+uf only. If source is home handpump, you dont require any filter untill you see any problem in water. In most of the indian cities you dont require RO.

Very informative. I am a microbiologist and I have been maintaining the view of 150 to 300 TDS since 1985 for human consumption as ideal. But companies like Kent and others have used "Low TDS" to gain market share. RO, Membrane Filters, In-line 5, in-line 7, etc type of water purifiers are only used in the Microbiology labs for lab studies for R&D purposes.

Good informative video. However, TDS control is done in purifier using a TDS control valve inside the purifier. Since the machine is to be opened & until you get confident of doing yourself, it is suggested to ask the service guy (this time ask for a different guy, as the guy who told you it cannot be controlled, obviously does not know this). TDS control valve mechanism is very simple; the small TDS control valve which is operated using a screw driver is actually an RO filter bypass valve whose output gets mixed with that of output of RO filter. Hence output TDS is controlled by the ratio in which output of RO water and bypassed water gets mixed. So, you cannot get TDS more than that of purifier source water. However, fully opening the TDS control valve can give you output TDS close to purifier's source water TDS (which I guess in your case is Municipality water).

Thanks for your efforts. You are right on many aspects but left out a few important ones as well. TDS is larger term. Total Solids is a mix of different minerals and salts. The percentage of mix varies from place to place. One cannot go as per the TDS itself. Even for good minerals, body needs a fix percentage only and excess intake is also harmful. Nowadays Purifier companies have come up with a solution where they retreat water with copper post RO to increase the minerals but i am not in favor of this as initial wastage of water will still be there and % of minerals is not defined. I agree with you and do not support RO but instead of deciding on RO or carbon treated filters or other technology i will suggest to go into roots and see what % of minerals are good for humans and what % are there in different TDS ranges in different regions across India. It will be great if you can research in that line and throw more light on this topic.

Hi, Ranjit Bhaiya. This was a really great video. I knew about this mineral depreciation when I bought it I was told the region you live in doesn't contain any mineral because I live near a bunch of Power Plants all above 600MW (Renusagar,Distt Sonebhadra U.P) . But even then the Aditya Birla Group in which I work gives purified water to its colony After seeing this I will switch to Candle Filters like the Aqua Sure ones to separate out metals from water. Because the TDS level in my area is around 300 I remember. However I would really request you to Please make a video on Air Purifier too specifically If it is needed in my scenario (I have mentioned my Location above in this comment ) Thank You Once Again

My aged parents usually watch a lot of TV and they became kind of obsessed with RO due to ads and peer pressure of seeing it being installed at every home. I almost rebelled against it and made them settle on regular gravity filters. These are the things I've also been trying to explain to my friends and family members for long. dear Ranjit.... 1. As enlightening as your article is, it is pertinent to bring out that TDS is a wrong way of measuring the purity of water. As educated people we need to know that TDS includes all dissolved solids that is GOOD as well as BAD (impurities). we must understand that growing industrialization and urbanization, as also the general lack of professionalism in our work ethos (esp got org), even treated water may not always be drinkable due to possibility of leakages and contamination enroute from the treatment plants. And we do lack the technology/ mass implementaion of high end tech as found in many developed nations to control these essential services like water in this case. 2. End of the video you show that the TDS cannot be controlled. i must correct you here and educate all that there is a small screw based know on the inside of the machine wherein u can increase or decrease the TDS of the final water output. i have a KENT RO GRAND PLUS model and i have done it at them. i maintain it at 200+. Maybe you got a bad tecnician. U must get in touch with Kent company for this clarity. 3. these are water purifiers. its does not incl RO alone but also sediment filter, charcoal filter, UV filter and some others. Let us not unnecessarily bad mouth companies even without having the knowledge of how the whole Purification system works. water can have dissolved microbes and smell and other contaminants. how do you remove that ???? 4. i understand your desire to educate your followers, but pls do not go over board and start misleading people. Even a TDS of 200 can have dissolved microbes which can cause various diseases. no one will want that for the families. 5. This episode is very good and a social service. I myself worked in water treatment and desalination for many years in Middle East. Ro is good for brackish and sea water where salinity is high. TDS and MG/L are two different ways of expressing water impurity. What you are calling a TDS meter is actually measuring conductivity, which is commonly expressed in micromhos or microsiemens. TDS is generally considered .6 of Micromhos, if you want to measure by conductivity. TDS can also be directly titrated, but nobody bothers.

Since I test and treat water (not potable) for a living, I have a rather expensive device that tests pH, conductivity, TDS, and oxydizer (free chlorine), depending on what button you push. If your testing device says TDS, the math of .6 is probably built in.

This video is very nice and informative. I was thinking about not using RO, but then another thought came to mind. In societies, water supply is generally through water boring and water stored in roof top tanks, which are usually not clean. So RO helps in cleaning those impurities.

Many purifiers have MTDS(manually control total disolves) which can be manually increase or decrease tds of water purifier..so go for that kind of purifiers, example aquaguard with RO+ UV and MTDS.

Hi Ranjit. Thanks for the brilliant information and review on RO waters. Have gone through some more readings online. I use Kent RO water purifier. TDS post RO process came to 25. Also observed the waste water flow is much higher. Now have set the TDS level to 80 and after six months shall change to more then 150 so that family can gradually adjust to the taste change. Also realised the tap water TDS level is 260 at my home so just normal filter + UV can be used. You saved my day, was planning to buy new machine but some adjustments have helped me to continue the same machine. So thank you and keep posting & educating.

Muncipal water: Has low TDS, around 150-300 TDS level. UV/UF or membrane filters are just fine. Borewell water: RO is required as the TDS is high 500 or above.

In most western countries people drink tap water, the reason is not tds levels but contaminants. Indian tap water is not fit to drink as in contains nitrates, chlorine bi-products such as THMs, microplastics and lead. Yes RO filter, filters all the benificial minerals but so does it filter the contaminants. You can pop a multivatimin and get all your minerals.

I've been in the water filtration/purification business for 25 years. The only time that I would use R.O. is if there was sodium in the water. Most point of use (POU) water can be filtered with a 5-micron turbidity filter followed by an activated carbon filter.

Sir , There is actually a knob inside the R.O. from where we can control the T.D.S. I had called the technician to check the RO as it was having some problem.Meanwhile I asked him to change the TDS levels from 30 to 130. He changed it with the knob inside.

I am a Chemical Engineer by Profession and Working in Industrial and Society level RO system installation and commissioning. RO removes all the Salts and minerals content present originally in Raw water. This gives very less TDS in final water. I have been doing this for last 20 months and consuming same water. But I have noted that my working and health is also affected by it. I have some time head ache and body pain due to low in blood Ions content. I have noted and suggest my clients to make adjustments to RO reject level to get water with atleast TDS of 120 ppm to 250 ppm to make our blood ions check, healthy life.

If you think water quality is not good enough and has not clear water. I suggest to just used Sand filter and Carbon filter if you have Low TDS water from Municipal corporation. This will remove the any turbidity in water and absorbed any harmful chemicals or germs on to Charcoal filter.

Good job Ranjeet, particularly in looking at consumer tech, beyond smart devices, that impact us everyday. Pure water doesn't necessarily mean healthy water as our bodies need the dissolved traces of minerals. Spring water has natural minerals. Think RO manufacturers are adding back minerals to their purified water to counter this problem. Also, note RO water purifying systems are more expensive to purchase and have have much higher AMCs.

We can use it to wash clothes and utensils. I have installed a long pipe in my home and water is storing outside in a bucket where we can wash our utensils and clothes. With this we can save lots of water. Groundwater is already dried in many places of India, population is also increasing day by day.

If the water tds is less than 500 but the water source is bore or bore+municipal. Due to this it can contain heavy metals like lead,arsenic and even harmful chemicals like pesticide,insecticide which only be removed by RO technology and not by UV/UF technology so RO is still required in this case therefore it is not compulsory to not use RO technology if water tds is less tha 500.

BEWARE !! This guy is a fraud !! Lots of false information in this video. TDS IS NOT the main purpose of RO water purifier in India. There are a lot of contaminants such as heavy metals, bacteria and viruses in the water supply. Most water supply is very contaminated. RO purpose is to remove pollution from the water. At 2.55 the video claims that low TDS water is harmful and this is untrue, you will get plenty of minerals from your food so low TDS water is OK for long term consumption. At 2.57 he moves to screen shot to say WHO and BIS report that 300-66mg/l is required but this FALSE !! The document refers only to "TASTE" only !! This guy is a fraud ! Low TDS is NOT a problem because you eat food and you get 1,000,000 times more minerals from food than water. Rainwater is low TDS and low mineral but everyone is safe to drink rainwater so this guy is a fraud !!! RAINWATER IS MORE PURE THAN RO WATER, RAINWATER IS BEST FOR DRINKING. AT 6.50 another report claims waste water is 9 litres wasted to make one litre of drinking water, THIS IS COMPLETELY FALSE !!!! Hey ranjit thank you for this video... I also wanted to get ro purifier system for my home but the salesman told me not to buy. I was confused myself why he said so and went home and did some research myself and found the exact same thing...i was really surprised that the general public was not being made aware of this issue by the mass media because a lot of companies are pushing sale of ro systems where it is not necessary....my respect for you and your channel has increased manifold and hope all tech youtubers can find some time to make more such india relevant videos and not just concentrate on personal entertainment devices....kudos to you geeky

Yes what you said is correct sir. We are staying in rented house. We may get multiple transfers and change area of stay... Water TDS levels may change in different places. If we can't have control over TDS level of water, then there is no use in implementing RO system in our home. Does any product gives TDS control of available water

I bought the KENT Grand+ in 2022. I asked the installation person to tweak the TDS to about 90, well he did it and it works. I think they've updated it and Its quite good.

The machine does contains TDS adjuster. Maybe the technician is new and doesn't know much apart from installation. Even if there isn't TDS adjuster, you can still install a third party TDS adjuster easily.

I can see the 5 stage purifiers usually ends with RO filters. What about the purifiers that have the extra 'Mineral' filter that claims to add back those necessary minerals into the RO water? Is that helpful or is it still harmful? I haven't checked with TDS meter so I'm not sure.

I have one (in US). It had a mineral cartridge. It still gave TDS of 20-30, sometimes lower. Bottled water that I compared against also had 25 TDS. Question is, why does it matter, if you are already getting calcium magnesium etc from food? I am sure it matters, but I just want to know why is it also important to have the water mineralized? I have read that adding Himalayan salt (pink) could re-mineralize the water. I am not recommending it. But something worth researching.

As these water purifiers entered Indian market, we only had UV and a activated carbon filter. That's more than sufficient for soft water. As you elaborated RO is required only where water is hard

Most of branded purifier come with tds adjustment wherein you can ask the technician to keep the level of tds you desire. A ro, uv, uf with tds meter should be brought and there is no problem!

Hi Ranjit sir, very informative Video and well explained. The fact is that we are usually waste 50 % of water, I am planning to but this as my TDS level is 400 at my place which is close to borderline of 600. Have done research on my own and planning to buy one and controlled its TDS to desired level. I totally agree with what you said but the place I am leaving is like they don't care about water purification (Not Municipal water) Grampanchayat Supply is there. In rainy season have found filaments and bacteria visible to the naked eyes and that's the point I lean to modern water purifiers. Right now my supply water color is like coffee now just Imagine. In Kent Purifiers if you open the upper cover there you will find one TDS controller device from where you can actually regulate the TDS of water and I am planning to but one which can controller the TDS as well as it will pump my rejected water to my storage tank which will get diluted and doesn't make any difference for purifier.
