Short answer, Papa Palps limiting aspects of the droid army of course, as planned. If the full might of the CIS was allowed operational freedom they would of steam rolled the GAR.
@VisonsofFalseTruths
@VisonsofFalseTruths 3 жыл бұрын
Bingo. The CIS was, quite simply, superior in terms of numbers and firepower. Other valid logic aside, the entire war was a play by Palpatine to assume total control of the Republic, destroy the Jedi and form the Empire. He needed a Republic left to control, so he would have had his servants stop using strategies that worked too effectively. The war was a show, and the CIS was always a sacrificial lamb.

Yep, his main plan was to make a war so horrible that the Senate would gladly cede their power to him to ensure it would never happen again. He could have used the Droid army to just steamroll the Republic, which only had an army to defend itself BECAUSE of the secret deals he and Dooku made, but he wanted it to be nice and legal so it would be easier to get the galaxy to cooperate with his regime. Though I suspect he kept Droid steamroll as plan B.

One of the separatist was the Banking Guild (which makes you wonder where the Republic got its money for the war). And with any bank you have a bean counter looking at the return of investments. Realistically, the more effective droids would also be more expensive. And if you look at the return of investment, these more effective droids would have a lesser return because they were used primarily as security for high profile locations. To a bean counter if you can say this model of droid has killed 5000 clones and 4 jedi and this model has killed 2 clones ... you are probably going to suggest that former model is what you are going to want to spend your money on.

I would argue sniper's would have been much more effective for the CIS. The amount of clone commanders and officers we see especially those on the battlefield gives the snipers a whole scope of targets to choose from. You can program a tactical or even a commando droid in a short amount of time while a Clone commanders or officer takes years to be trained. Sure it could be countered by Clone officers getting stronger armor to protect themselves but the droids could simply increase the power of the rifle.

The thing is that the clones have gotten so cohesive that they could still put up a good fight without a commander being around. While some clones do fare better at leadership than the others, the stuff that made them so good at doing so are picked up in the field, instead of being learned back in Kamino. With that said, having one commander down pretty much only means having another take his place in a matter of days.
@Furonanator139
@Furonanator139 Жыл бұрын
Yes plus there is a big difference between the two armies, the clones love each other. Not to say the droids were incapable of comradery but the CIS programmed them to be as restricted in sentience as possible while still performing their role so a downed commander would just have the next in line step in like it was nothing. With the clones though most of them look at each other as brothers and seeing them fall especially the best among them will wear down their spirit. Heck that was the design of the war anyway, to wear down the spirits of the Jedi and the galaxy

the wall of death had another perk thats less obvious, its scary as fuck. not like droids are scary themselves, especially to clones, but the wall of death is a parade style march relatively slow of droids, who canonically explode upon death too (really hard to animate so they dont bother in the movies or shows) which means killing one could take out his neighbors too. yet they did it anyways despite it being about the highest loss deployment method possible. thats because the clones knew it was wasteful and thus knew the CIS could afford to waste droids where the GAR was usually short on men. In season six of clone wars we see a whole battalion is like thirty clones, fifty max, apperantly. or at least three jedi wanted to capture a giant planet sized facility with that few clones (Anakin gives reinforcements to compensate heavy losses to another general. those reinforcements are ten clones only. they got by with few men apparently). So imagine you have a hundred men and you see the enemy slowly marching their thousands at you in an obviously exposed position they must know will cost them many many droids, what would be going through an average clones head? probably "i have a bad feeling about this" or some kind of hopeless fear. either way its demoralizing to the any army to know their adversary can throw away troops like that

@Just_Lars
@Just_Lars 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the thing with all Commando Operations (at least in Star Wars) is, that they followed two targtes: Take out high value personal, or conquer/destroy critical infrastructer to prepare an attack. The thing is, especially the CIS had very few of those. There is no point in kiling Governeurs or Senators, because it doesn't do anything for the war. Same with bases or outposts: sure, you might conquer one, but why putting so much effort into something that can be archived by a surprise Attack by ordinary droids too. In the end, while the republic used their commandos for stuff like scouting, sabotage of factorys and so on, commando droids replaced Droidekas in guard dutys or where simply used as Jedi killers (a job Magna guards were better at) because most CIS Commanders rarely ever had use for them. They were too expensive to be deployed in mass numbers, while the the republic hadn't any big facilities worth destroying aside from maybe Kamino, a few hospital stations and Coruscant itself. What they were actually really good at was using civilian infrastructure and civilians themselves to their advantage. The seperatist leadership knew, that the Republic never would attack at the risk of civilian casulties, so a repeated strategy (with great success) was, to put up their Operation bases in big cities with many civilians. That way the enemy was forced to CQC-Combat, were the droids could use there mass numbers undisturbed by heavy fire. Another evry effective strategy was blockading planets to force the local government to surrender. Sure, it took some time but since most ships were manned by droids, it wasn't personal intense and the GAR couldn't fight anywhere at the same time, they needed to focus power to break one. And when theere where dozens of blockades all over the galaxy, you can imagine that it was a figth against windmills.

As far as I could tell; reading into the lore from Republic Commando forwards and throughout the Clone Wars; Rise of the Empire and the Galatic Civil War Periods. CIS droids were superior in nearly every respect to clones; save for their independent thinking. Clone casualties in the Clone War; Storm Troopers, Rebels and Zann Consortium Forces all took heavy casualties against droids; even the overpowered and highly well equipped (albeit illegally) Zann Consortium struggled to take over a droid factory. The largest reasons why the CIS didn't employ greater methods was because Emperor Palpatine was running the show. In addition the CIS were also not as well unified as they seemed; they were dozens of independence groups working together, but that didn't mean they all liked it. I imagine price tags for cheap items were exorbitant; and even expensive items were difficult to make because one group wanted way more credits than the tech was worth.

While it´s obviously way to inefficient to equip every mere B1 or B2 Battledroid with a PSG, it still doesn´t make much sense why they wouldn´t use them on the more expensive and thus less expendable models like Magnaguards or Elite-Battledroids, especialy since the Magnaguards are primarily designed for CQC and have to close the distance to their target without beeing hit by blasterfire. Most CoS Leaders are buisnessmen. They should realize it´s cheaper and more efficient to spend more on the Droids to increase their durability in combat instead of wasting ressources to constantly replace them due to lesser defences.

You also have to remember that most of these strategies, as seen in the clone wars, were undermined by the Jedi. Yeah, sure you could revise them, but they would evidently just find another way around it, and the cycle would keep repeating. Meanwhile, strategies like the death March and other strategies that seemingly could have been put to revision actually won a decent number of battles.

1:29 the weapon here is the most under used weapon for its effectiveness and simplicity. we are shown in the episodes its used single B1s are more than capable of lifting and carrying mutch heavier equipment (shells for their semi-autonomous cannons), and the things lay down serieous firepower even jedi have a hard time , let alone the clones. if there was 1 for every 10 B1s (like the MG42 for the germans in ww2) the seps would likely lockdown the field in practically every battle, giveing the seps a major advantage. add in mortars (cheap and effective close support artillery) and more artillery in general and the clones would be quickly suppressed and destroyed, while the droids would be mostly free to manuvre and advance.

You're missing the most obvious and most honest answer. The CiS armies didn't use advanced tactics more than once, because this was a TV show, and they didn't like to repeat tactics, because that would bore people. They didn't repeat a winning strategy because the bad guys can't be allowed to win. Unique designs followed the "rule of cool" and were deployed based on that, not on based on tactics or strategy.

An idea they could've used was a ray shield on the back of an AAT, and you have one in an armored column of, let's say 20 tanks, put the shield tank at the middle or the rear of the formation and now the column is more heavily defended.

Like when Rex, Anakin, and Fives went to save Tup, we see only Commando Droid Captains and not regular ones. Is it because Captains are more competent and they didn’t want to use normies or is this something I’m thinking to hard about?

I feel like the Wall of Death strategy may have been one more motivated by the corporate leadership of the CIS than any potential tactical value. In most situations you want heavy armor to lead your charges as those units can shrug off small arms fire and take out priority targets before the lighter more vulnerable infantry come in to actually secure the area and mop up anything the armor missed. With the droid army though I can see even entire platoons of B1s being cheaper than a single AAT and with casualties being a non issue it's simply more cost effective to lead with the most disposable and cheapest unit.

It probably (at least in universe) comes down to Sidious not wanting the CIS to win too much, otherwise the war might have slipped out of his control. I mean droidekas could have easily been upgraded with better legs to be able to walk on sand and such and maybe even a repulsor-unit to prevent them from easily being force-pushed, if you added some better weapons and maybe some phrik or cortosis-weave (to protect them while rolling!), then you have a jedi-killer on your hands (which could of course be turned on the sith, too!)! Sniper-Droidekas could have been used to overwhelm weaker Jedi at long range, droids with shields would have over all been tougher to kill, while still being able to be made a lot faster than clones (clones need to grow, even with growth-acceleration (which also makes them age faster later on, so it is a trade off), not to mention that they need training (even with flash-learning, which is quite dangerous, too as it can damage the brain!))...hell, if the CIS went all out, the Jedi might have once again have had to utilize techniques they forgot about (sometimes deliberately, because of dogma...hell, they might have had to teach everybody ELECTRIC JUDGEMENT, which is a Jedi-Version of Force Lightning!), like Droid-Destruction Force Power! Hell, they might have looked into battle meditation, to boost the clones even more (and which would make even some badly trained Rebell forces - yes, the first Rebells were badly trained (if at all! Many were cannon fodder basically) - into an army, with a single Jedi there to utilize battle meditation, which basically turns living beings into a something akin to a hive mind or a fully networked droid army!)

I think another part of the reason is how TCW portrays the CIS as mostly marching columns of B1s armed with E-5s, when expanded content like Star Wars Legion has the average squad of B1 Battledroids carrying 2 or so heavy weapons, using genuine tactics, and Battlefront 2 has a variety of weapons that B1s can be equipped with as well.

Now I know we have these discussions about why the Republic and CIS didn’t do more of a specific thing. But here’s a question to ask. Why didn’t we see a lot of stuff from the Clone Wars, including these specialized units and tactics, be used by the Empire? I mean stormtroopers (for all their awful depictions) are meant to be well trained marines to the Empire yet they seem to almost always use just a big down standard infantry for most stuff instead of mixing up specialized units in their ranks. The shields for example could have been used by Stormtrooper guards on ships and stations.
@Just_Lars
@Just_Lars 3 жыл бұрын
Canonically, the Empire's propaganda made it seem like the Stormtrooper where the Empires finest, when they really were not. Maybe at the start, yes, but with the years they lowered the standards and the Stormtrooper exeeded in numbers even partially the "regular" Imperial troops. Plus, those were mostly stationed on peaceful planets as a kind of heavy armed police, while Stormtrooper where more or less the actual Army of the Empire. The high numbers brought up the need for relatively cheap, standartized equipment and since dead Stormtroopers where higly replaceble, there really was no need to put more money into them then necessary. Another explenation would be, that the priorites where just different. Since Tarkin established his doktrin, the Empire tried to look as scary as possible. The money got into big, shiny projects. A battle station here, a massive fleet of basically useless Battleships there. They just saw no need to equip the troops properly, because as soon as the galaxy would see the true potential of the empire, nobody would rebel anyway.

THe CIS tactics are just really cool. THey have all these units but they keep tactics rather simple, send in waves of cannon fodder. But as we saw in EP 2 they had the means to do this, we saw how quickly a B1 can be made in a factory, now have that ocuring deep in their territory safe from invasion for long enough and they can churn out huge armies. THus as the war progressed, depite having a decent veriety of units, most Sep leaders just stuck to this basic tactic, and thus the Republic with mounting losses that were slow to replace, switched to guality over quantity, seen by them usng the V-19 and Z-95 as their basic fighter and Y-wing as their main bomber, the mounting pilot losses saw the ARC-170 which I would classify as a Heavy or Specialist Fighter like the Tie Defeneder and B-Wing of later years, was made the main workhorse of the Navy, since they couldn't out number the droids, out gun them, using the stronger ARC-170 it filled the role of fighter and sort of bomber, essentially the ARC-170 becae the go to fighter for bombing and engaging capital ships, while the V-wing became the ne main Interceptor and did it's best to deal with droid fighters allowing the ARC-170 to try and accomplish it's task. We also see this in EP 2 where the CLone Army lined up in formations on Geonosis, standard battle tactics, but then in EP 3 made very clear with Kashyyk they fought more spread out, had more specialized units, and more diverse vehicles, thus they outgunned the CIS as best as they could and used diverse tactics.

Yah, the Wall of Death to me is an absolute joke if you have very light units marching slowly. The size thing isn’t a benefit in using it, it’s a crutch to make it have some use. If the GAR used more Artillery, Bombers, Mortars and such. The Wall of Death would be the robot equivalent of WW1 as they have no defenses besides just robots which will go out when their slow movement gets struck by Artillery. With how Confederates Leaders use their droids, I feel like the GAR would’ve won in the end unless the Leaders either coughed up some cash to provide proper defenses or to give them better tactics. It reminds me of the Ukraine War where the Russian Convoys gets bombed and ambushed constantly.

I think a more likely justification was. The Sepertets were an alliance of different companies, worlds and such... Think of the Allies of WW2. And while we "might" see something like the Sherman in every theater... Why didn't the Americans use the Spitfires early war? Why didn't the Brittish use the US carriers? Most likely what we were seeing was "different factions" or governments under the Separatist alliance umbrella, in different theaters, using what THEY found worked, and what THEY had designed. While many items were "lend leased". Different groups would likely design, build and use their own specalized items for the theaters they work in... and not "share" with other factions, or worse, not want to take from other factions because of their own pride. "Bah, why should we keep getting american handme downs... when we can produce our own Yak-1 fighters!" Lack of wanting to share, domestic pride, and such, lead factions do design and build their own and use their own rather then sharing. US built the sherman, Russia built the T-34, UK built the Crusader. each worked for its theater.

The wall of death deployment strategy is possibly not as bad as he frames it as, not just efficient deployment, but if you have a single droid shooting at 60 blasts per minute (bpm) and you have 64 droids in an 8x8 formation you have 60 blasts multiplied by 64, affectively increasing the fire rate rediculously high if they're focusing on a single target. And with this would've been way better with the fact that the CIS seldom had to worry about being outnumbered. This formation was actually used by European countries during the 1800s as a unit of soldiers would have the fire rate of a machine gun with only using muskets

The CIS would have been unstoppable on land if they just used 20th century maneuver warfare tactics. Columns of AATs backed up by vehicle-carried infantry could run circles around Republic armored formations and shred Republic infantry in open terrain, while concentrated formations of BX commandos with artillery support could storm Republic positions in urban areas and forests. Republic battle lines could be cut apart and isolated from resupply before being overrun, one segment at a time, by "walls of death" from multiple directions.

Like, yeah they were more expensive and made by a different manufacturer, but they were like one man armies and buying 1000-2000 units wouldn’t really be that much of a financial blow to the cis. I feel like the wall of death strategy could of been effective, if it had been used better. A very similar real life strategy was Soviet and Chinese doctrine during much of the Cold War, which relied on many of the same advantages the separatists possess, namely shear production capability and numbers. Unlike common belief, Soviet doctrine wasn’t just throwing soldiers and tanks at the enemy until they won, it was much more complex then just a horde of unit. The idea was rooted in the concept of ‘deep-battle’ which emphasized extending warfare into an opponents rear lines by using large, corp-sized or front-sized units to force the enemy to spread their defenses thin, unknowing of where the main effort was. This was accomplished by the coordination of large and heavily armed forces to assault all at once in a highly detailed and planned out style, causing a ballet of death and destruction that would overwhelm the enemy. Now that’s what the Soviets were capable of with the worldly production capacity and having to worry about human lives lost, the separatists had no such reason to care about that. This could of helped massively in their favor, but much of their tactics were just haphazard swarms and massed forces on a random location, with none of the scale or coordination required for a Soviet-esque assault. If they did use of how ever, they would of been a much more formidable force most-likely.

Your first few wave of B1's and Super Battle Droids having their own personal shields to help protect the front of the army in case some how the deflector shield gets destroyed or just when you finally make contact with the enemy within range. Having Jedi killer manga guards with thier own personal shields while being protected by the Commando droids armed with sniper rifles to basically just kill off any Jedi and Clone Commanders. Fuck it send some Droidika's at Clone Armor with them having a explosive core or something inside so they can just be suicide bombers. # The handheld shield was only used in that prison, because it was a riot shield. Using Comando droids as prison guards was a waste, but also nessesary to recapture escaped prisoners *alive* Commando Droids were much harder to kill using acrobatics then shields # droidekas were turrets or MG nests with a travel mode - not battlefield weapons. With low speed and a vulnerable travel mode, they would have been heavy weapons and artillery magnets # sniper droidekas were a terrible idea. They used the same limited components of a droideka. But they also needed to be put on exposed highground, making them _even easier_ HW and Arti targets. And they could not use cover like a humanoid # snipers rarely worked in Star Wars. Jedi precognition is hard to overcome. And the sniper droids usually died within seconds of firing the first shot. Changing position is sniper 101, but they could not do even that effectively
