This version of Geki-Dai-San is very well designed. The open hand techniques employed are very much within the Goju-Ryu tradition. Good presentation Sensei Che !

Ah, thank you so much! It's actually a better way to think of a kata as being designed, rather than springing from the head fully formed, like Athena. Everything is deliberate, like flower arrangement, or art.

Sensei Ché, as usual wonderful depth of knowledge and history. I had no idea there was such a Kata. It does exactly what it says on the tin, fills in the gap of Dai-ni to Saifa. You know what my black belts will be learning for the next few weeks 🙏

Interesting. I'm in Jinbukan Goju. We don't have a Dai San. We do gekiha as an intermediate between Gekisai Dai Ni and Saifa. It's not considered an "official" kata in out school, but it's a nice transitional kata for training.

Indeed, both Geki ha and Geki 3 make great transitional kata, and its important to have something outside the syllabus as well just to add depth to our training and understanding. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm always looking out for things that are different yet familiar. So I'm grateful for seeing Gekisai dai San. It will add some variety to my training. I quite like that you didn't edit out an error, no-one would know. But its quite humbling to see. The chi-ishi drill is really good timing, I'll look forward to learning it and finally use the chi-ishi that I made some years ago. There was a moment, when you performed with the heavier chi-ishi - I saw Higaonna Sensei. I thought you might like reading that. Great video, very educational. I can learn a lot from continuing to subscribe to your channel. Thank you.

We love Geki 3 as a way to add variety without adding too much confusion to the mix. I like to leave Ché's errors in; he owns them, and he is the first to say that he's human and makes mistakes, even after 40 years of training. He doesn't interfere at all with the editing process - he films, I edit, and then if there's time he watches a draft but often he only sees the final result when everyone else does. I think the Higaonna-sensei comment made him blush :) Thank you so much for the lovely, lovely comment! We always love hearing from you!

This makes great paedagogical sense. In Jumbi Undo we have preparatory exercises at the start of the class and these have movements that simulates techiniques to be practiced later in kihon and kata. In a similar way practicing movements in the form of a kata like Gekki Sai Dai San will greatly expedite and enhance the students learning of Saifa . In the Shorei Kan system, Toguchi Sensei has developed a teaching curriculum where the progress of practice is very structured so that, in looking back, the student realizes that they have grasped difficult techniques without undue strain. Great video again Che Sensei.

There's something called the Goldilocks rule - students learn best when a task isn't too hard or too easy, but just the right amount of challenge. And this does ease that massive jump to Saifa. We know that Geki 1 and 2 came long after the other kata, and were developed specifically as introductory kata, which is why they don't really resemble the other, much more complicated kata in the Goju Ryu system. Toguchi Sensei's structured teaching truly shows pedagogical understanding, when many instructors are great practitioners, but not great teachers. Ché is lucky to be both, I admire it greatly about him. Thank you for always taking the time to write such thoughtful comments, Sensei!

Sensei, thank you very much for sharing this kata; so much practical application in your demonstration! It seems very advanced for me, but I am just a beginner in Goju. Currently, I am just learning the Ichi version of Gekisai Dai. I have not heard of the San version being practiced in the dojo I attend, but as a beginner, I am not preview to a lot of the advanced curriculum yet. Either way, when it is my time to learn the Ni version, I will practice it together with your San version for personal Karate development. Arigato gozaimasu, Sensei 🙏

George, you have the most excellent beginner's mind - please keep it through all your journey! Geki 1 has plenty to get started on. We have done about 7 videos on that kata alone, just to try catch all the content. Thank you so much for your lovely comments, and we can't wait to train with you on Zoom in June!

Very interesting Kata, I would recommend as a training tool, but I think who ever teaches this kata, must be stressed it's training purposes only. Cause it could confuse students of the art. Personally I wouldn't add anything, unless the origination allows it, I'm just fearful of diluting the art or confusing the students. As always Sensei your an encyclopedia of Goju-Ryu, your fantastic, take care and be well.

For these reasons, we don't teach in order (say before Saifa), but rather as a supplementary kata to come back to once the basics are in place :) Thank you so much for these very kind words, and for your amazing support of our work!

This is a super idiosyncratic version specific to a handful of dojos in Johannesburg, South Africa, so it is nice to hear that the Kata has some sort-of cousins elsewhere in the world! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on this very specific topic - we appreciate it 🙇🏻‍♀️
